If a dirt block is next to another dirt block (by one) it will create the grass texture on the sides of the block as well. Creates a more hilly effect. You can clearly see it in both of the screenshots at the start of the thread.
As for the patcher not working it works 100% for me as of the latest update. Usoda I know you said you read the readme but you did put the .jar in the minecraft folder not just the mods folder correct?

I've had problems with the Xau patcher since the last update, and I'm not the only apparently.
Mine is patching 100% and the effects are taking place. Whenever it freezes at 7% I delete the bin, redownload the files, then patch it again and it works. Are there any other mods you're using that may be conflicting?

So what should I do about it not working when it does claim to patch? I don't want to risk deleting the bin again (Or is there no risk?)
I definitely have no conflicting mods (I don't have anything besides texture packs)
EDIT: Now Minecraft won't start at all. I'm inclined to believe this mod had something to do with it. How should I start from scratch again? I do have backups.

Deleting the /bin is harmless afaik as the client will just redownload said files upon launch/logging in. When people are saying nothing is happening, (part of my family tech support is forcing this question) you did have AO and BG checked before clicking patch correct?
Bettergrass is fairly obvious when it's working but AO can be a bit more subtle. Merely asking, it could be that it's not doing anything in which case I'll leave the patching issue to someone more tech savvy (as I personally haven't run into a non-patching issue after redownloading the bin and I can always see a difference).

Please never stop updating this. It's great. First mod I go to after an update.

Patcher still does not work.
Same error as i had with v1.1, can't find the specified path (Yes, i've read the readme, yes i've put the mods folder in the .minecraft folder in %appdata%
I give up.
I don't know if it makes a difference - I just make sure when I extract that the patcher ends up in the .minecraft folder (not in bin).
Then I do this:
1. Start patcher.
2. Answer yes to make backup.
3. I make sure to make 'original' and 'output' (under files in the patcher) point to the minecraft.jar in the bin folder (my 'original' folder is already filled in - just have to hit 'browse' on the 'output' and 'save' and it fills in the 'output' with the path to the minecraft.jar file in the bin folder).
4. Tick ambient occlusion and better grass and hit patch.
urrr... Tick 'bettergrass'? All I have is a greyed out checkbox that says 'BrOkEnGrAsS' or something.
I downoaded from the front page, do I have an outdated version?

Very, very outdated.
Make sure you force-refresh the front page, delete all old copies, and download a fresh copy.
Then delete minecraft/bin/ to get rid of old backups (which will screw things up), start up Minecraft to force a fresh download of the jar, go into Texture Packs and Mods in the vanilla client and make sure the texture pack you want to use is the one selected, load a single player world to make sure it's working and let it save your options, then exit.
Unzip MrMessiah's pack that you just downloaded (the fresh one) into your minecraft directory, the one /bin/ is in. It should put the patcher, a directory called /mods/, and a readme into the directory. Start the patcher. When you get the screen, make sure the options you want are ticked (I use BetterGrass and Ambient Occlusion), make sure that the original and output files BOTH point at the fresh minecraft.jar in your /bin/ directory. Answer yes if it asks if you want to make a backup. Press Patch.
Exit the utility and test to make sure that it's working before trying to apply anything else, such as a HD texture fix or other mod. If you chose BetterGrass, grass and snow should extend down the sides of blocks that only have a one block elevation difference with another of the same type. If you chose AO, you should see deeper shadows in the creases of blocks.
I install it, the patcher says success, but when I run the game nothing has changed.
