For the Mac users having trouble, make sure you have Java SE 6.0 running at the top of you list in your java preferences. For some reason Macs sometimes have Java SE 5 above Java SE 6, which can cause a lot of errors.
I Suppose its been asked in these 66 pages, but could someone tell me exactly what the better mods are/do? I saw the picture but it dosent seem that much different to me. Also, does this require any editing of images, because i dont have photoshop or have any idea how to combine textures.

It hangs at 6% with that message, is it because its outdated?
Alright, tried the patcher one more time for good measure, and I got it to work. Unfortunately, if I check the BetterGrass or SimpleMap, I get a black screen right after long in. Anyone figure this out? Again, I'm on a Mac....
Mr.Messiah. I loaded up version 1.8 of MrMods and everything looks absolutely amazing. The improvement on 1.4 is definitely noticeable but when a crafted an oven the top of it became a portal into the Nether!
I am using 'The best of Quandry' texture pack.
What has happened?
Notch added and changed like 20 blocks yesterday most texture packs were not updated, that is a texture issue not a betterlight mod issue.

You're using an un-updated texture pack. Furnaces/dispensers have a new top texture, among other things.

Basically, it's purpose is to help with realistic lighting. It's not as easy to see the improvement just from looking at a picture, unless you kind of know what to look for. I'd suggest installing it and seeing the difference for yourself in game. Personally I can't stand the default lighting anymore
BetterGrass just adds grass to the sides of dirt blocks
You don't have to do anything outside of simply installing the mod. Nothing with photoshop etc is remotely necessary
mr messiah, is it within the bounds of possibility that you contribute to McMod until it has all features your patcher uses and integrate your mods there?
Whats McMod?
McMod is a custom minecraft loader which injects mod code when starting up minecraft and autoupdates itself (thus you don’t have to care about class file names).
i love this. it just makes the game seem more......HD......
i dont know why Notch doesnt implement this, but who am i to question the almighty Notch? no one thats who.
compare the date in the thread title with the latest major update.
is “mod last updated” ≥ “last major minecraft update”? if yes, you have your answer.
Scaevolus has just uploaded a new version of Optimine (with the same version number I think, but its the one linked in the OP of his thread - redownload it to make sure) which fixes the compatibility with BetterLight.

Windows 7 Pro, 32bit. After patching with a vanilla/uneditted .jar, it stops at 6% with an error in bm.class.
Yes.

BetterLighting more or less adds ambient occlusion. If you have no idea what that is, then here's the wiki to get you started: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambient_occlusion
