... As far as I know, this mod doesn't work in Linux. ...
Works fine in linux, as far as I can tell. I've yet to do extensive testing however. I followed instructions exactly as written, in command form that would be...
cd ~/.minecraft
unzip /path/to/simplemap.zip
java -jar MCPatcher.jar
#Whatever you do to run minecraft
The only thing you can't do it run it from the patcher with the "run minecraft" button.
Additionally, I'm not sure if it's this version, or the new installation method, but now when a section hasn't been mapified yet, that area is pink instead of black (as it was before the patcher).
EDIT: Oh, and this has kind of bugged me, although it's not a huge deal. The "top" of the map should either be north (easy[?{whee nested brackets}] solution) or it should rotate so that the "top" is always the stuff in front of you (which I would assume is harder).
Minimap works well though sometimes the lighting doesn't show up. Being a map (and it's so small anyway it won't be much useful as a cheat) I think it would be better without the lighting, but one thing you should add is a compass/direction pointer.
First, awesome little mod. Handy for helping me know when it's daytime when I'm someplace that it's difficult to tell the time of day.
Secondly, I've been following the discussion a bit on "cave mode" and I had an idea. So idea:
Only show the inside of areas that are connected to the player by only air blocks and where the Z location is similar to the player.
Not sure if that's easy to do (or even possible), but the net result (I think) would be that things like buildings would [only] be shown when the player was in them (assuming they have a door, and, really, who doesn't put a door on their house?). The Z location bit is mostly so that caves don't get displayed when the player is above them (as opposed to in them).
So, yeah. Just my thoughts. My money is that you've already thought of this, but, if I can save someone a bit of time, more power to me, eh?
this is friggen amazing, one idea though is to make the color differences between high and low terrain better, i can only see the difference between normal and low terrain but barely either way

Set “Jar Launcher.app” to default program for opening jars, but yes that is the correct program to use. If you don't know how to set a default program, that's a bit trickier, but the info dialog in Finder.app may be helpful.

v0.9 has been ready to go for a while, albeit not in patch form. This is the one that adds (amongst other things) the support for maps any way up, and the optional chat stuff. To make that work in patch form I needed something in xau's patcher which wasn't there when I looked the first time, but in fact has been in there for a while, and I just didn't notice. Fail.
So anyway, rather than rush an update before October 31 comes along and breaks everything, I'm going to hold off until that's out before releasing the next version. Hopefully that won't take long, but its hard to say - even when Notch was updating once a week the code would stay pretty static from one update to the next, and I have a feeling that the size of the next update to Minecraft is going to mean a lot of stuff has moved around and will take a bit of finding. At that point this thread will become a kind of catchall for the other mods I've done, like BetterGrass, now they're all running off the same patcher. Seems pointless having seperate threads.
Finally, if it seems like I've been quiet the last week it's because I've been working on another mod that someone challenged me to do. Like the next version of SimpleMap, it's currently not working in a patch format that I can release, and it involves some pretty gross hacks that are going to take some thinking about how I tidy up for release, but lets just say if you liked Better Grass, you might like this a lot :smile.gif:
I dislike the patcher, it ruins my HD texture fix.
Is there any way to get 0.8 (or 0.9 when it's released) just as the .class files?
is ur HD Texture fix the one made by xau? Are u using the mcpatcher 1.1.6? Coz i'm having the same problem, just installed that today and it just overwrite the SimpleMap, now i don't see the co-ordinates or the minimap at all anymore.....
but apparently 303 said it's compatible, read the "Note" section in his topic here: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=61032
Ok I have figured it out:
1.Run the simple map patch
1a.I figure its a good time to place your terrain.png in the minecraft.jar (I placed it in both minecraft.jar and minecraft.original just to make sure)
2.Now click on the first selection box of the simple map patch and select your minecraft.jar again (not minecraft.original) it will ask do you want to overwrite, click yes.
3.Run the simple map patch again
4.Run the HD map fix
5.If all has gone to plan you should now have the simple map and HD texture fix
5a.Make a backup of your .bin folder so you dont have to do this again.
I will post this in both this thread and the HD fix thread to help people that are also having this problem.
so ur "HD map fix" is the mcpatcher v1.1.6 right? And i believe that minecraft.original is the backup made by the patcher, in case that u patched something and it went wrong, u simply rename minecraft.original back to minecraft and ur back to normal again......so ya don't think u need to patch that, but i'll try it anyway. Just need to know if ur using the mcpatcher v1.1.6 or not :smile.gif:
all files are where they are supposed to be, mcpatcher ran fine
but no matter what when i start playing i get the error saying no minimap overlay
anyhelp??
what version of minecraft are u running on? Do u have any other mods installed? Try patching a clean version of minecraft.jar and see if it works first.

not all the files are where they are supposed to be, specifically not <path-to-application-support>/minecraft/mods/SimpleMap/overlay.png.
If you need further help run Terminal.app and enter in
ls ~/Library/Application\ Support/minecraft/mods
and paste the results here. If after you succeed at fixing the problem you see a different error message it probably means that you need to have a plain text file named "SimpleMap.properties" in the same directory as above. I repeat that file should be PLAIN-TEXT. If it is not you will see weird errors.

Edit: Worked the next time i logged on, nevermind.
What program should it be opened with?

Would get rid of the patcher, (which if not used right conflicts with HD Texture Fix), and could also be done with better grass.
Just thought of this.
