Ore idea: you could write "coal," "diamond," "iron," "redstone," and "gold" in binary on each of the respective blocks and make the background the respective color.
That is a pretty awesome idea.

Ore idea: Maybe... What's something in the computer (actual OS) that's a resource?
You could go with file extensions... like .DLL and .INI, but then Mac users wouldn't understand.

You could have the ores as different file icons!
This could also work well.
A combination (somehow) of all of these could be interesting.
To hell with the mac users I don't care what they can't understand lol
What IS the icon for .dll files though? Because for me it's just the standard "Windows cannot open this file with any program you have" icon.
A plain white square... the icon is not very interesting at all, however you could make your own "file" icon and simply write .DLL on it. Other system or typically important files include:
- DLL
- INI
- CFG
- BAT
- EXE
Not exactly sure how this can really help you, just giving you some things to brainstorm about...
Well originally I was going to make ore fragmented files, but that didn't work because I couldn't make the furnace a defragmenter or whatever it's called.
I'm loving this pack so far! Here are some (probably bad) ideas I had while reading this thread:
The cactus could be a block that says "trigger_hurt".
The fire could be a block that says "env_fire".
The block breaking animation could be a scrolling terminal like you have on the TNT texture. In the last few frames the code starts to get red errors, and in the last one it's all red.
The block breaking animation could be an animation of someone typing in "ent_fire !picker break".
The sky could be this and the sun could say "light_environment".
Instead of the ores being fragmented, how about they're encrypted? When you put them in the furnace it has a loading bar and says "decrypting...".
If you ever add sounds to this mod, might I recommend shamelessly stealing them from the Dystopia GCF?
By the way, I think Dystopia is one of the best HL2 mods of all time. It might even rival Gmod, and it's definately as good if not better than TF2 in terms of gameplay. I really don't see why it's not more popular. [Link to website.]
EDIT: I just now realized that this thread could be considered "old". Sorry if this is considered a necrobump.
Come now, we don't want to confuse our non SDK friends, although an entirely text based texture with sdk terms would be cool.
I don't think it would be too confusing for non-sdk people. I mean "light_environment" is pretty self-explanatory and so is "env_flame" and "trigger_hurt". They won't get the reference, but it will still look very cyberspace-y. Although I admit that "ent_fire !picker break" and "skybox" are both a bit more obscure.
Also, the only reason I suggested these is because Dystopia happens to be a HL2 mod and I thought the Dystopia people might like the reference.

Small update:
Redone wood/logs
Rose - Skinny vacuum tube
Yellow Flower - Fat vacuum tube
brown shroom - transistor
red shroom - ??

Redstone circuitry wires/hubs done. Working on snow. Too tired to do more right now.
