Have you imported the GameRegistry and Items classes in your ExampleMod class?

Please don't PM me to ask for help or to join your mod development team. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future. I'm not interested in developing mods with people.
Like I suspected, you haven't imported the GameRegistry or Items classes. Your IDE will usually do this for you if you use its auto-complete menu while typing the class name.
I'm not that familiar with Eclipse, but it should be able to import the classes if you select the names in your code and select the appropriate menu item. I know IDEA lets you press Alt-Enter on a name with an error to bring up a menu with actions that can resolve the error (e.g. importing a class), Eclipse may have something similar.
You need to have a solid understanding of Java before you can write a mod. There are lots of resources online and offline that can teach you it.

You specified the wrong package name for your proxies in the @SidedProxy annotation (stuperon.Testy.proxy instead of stuperon.testy.proxy).
In future, please use Gist or Pastebin to post logs/crash reports (if applicable) and code with syntax highlighting. To get syntax highlighting on Gist, give each file the appropriate extension (.java for Java code). To get syntax highlighting on Pastebin, select the language from the dropdown at the bottom of the page.
It's much easier to read code with proper formatting and syntax highlighting.

cool, thanks for the tips, very much appreciated and not yet even got a github account (kind of dodging that for the moment). i did discover the caps error after rereading through the code, i didn't get this reply although i am subscribed to the thread;) i'm sure i'll be back to frustration in another couple of years;)

this was part of episode 3;)
You specified the wrong package name for your proxies in the @SidedProxy annotation (stuperon.Testy.proxy instead of stuperon.testy.proxy).
In future, please use Gist or Pastebin to post logs/crash reports (if applicable) and code with syntax highlighting. To get syntax highlighting on Gist, give each file the appropriate extension (.java for Java code). To get syntax highlighting on Pastebin, select the language from the dropdown at the bottom of the page.
It's much easier to read code with proper formatting and syntax highlighting.

Please don't PM me to ask for help or to join your mod development team. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future. I'm not interested in developing mods with people.
cool, thanks for the tips, very much appreciated and not yet even got a github account (kind of dodging that for the moment). i did discover the caps error after rereading through the code, i didn't get this reply although i am subscribed to the thread;) i'm sure i'll be back to frustration in another couple of years;)
