use a boat to out run the swarms (and everything else) on the water. or make a blade and kill the swarms.
I always use a boat or two for that run and go like a bat outta hell. With the swarms, aim straight ahead ahead at the heart of the swarm, about the same sweet spot for killing pigmen and other humanoid mobs. Also, if you're on an angle horizontally to them, try and get them straight opposite you in one of the cardinal directions. That'll ensure you land more hits. Incidentally, if you get ghostwood saps, make the xbow as soon as you can. regular string won't work, so you'll have to wait for flame string. If you happen to get some like I did fairly early you can get a decent crossbow with iron bolts which don't require a casting to make. Just pour molten iron over the ghostwood tool rod. This'll take swarms out at a safe distance with two hits.
I've learned that the taint can grow diagonally, meaning that if a block is open with a connecting corner then taint can grow in it, thus the way you have to barricade against taint is to create a wall that does not leave open corners in all directions, the easy way todo this is to make all walls 2 blocks thick at minimum.
It doesn't seem to matter if it's two or one thick, as long as you fill the corners. Two blocks is a good safety, though.

This is pretty good advice for taking on the swarms! I might be making a crossbow soon in my Let's Play.
Edit: And how did you get your flame string? Tips plox
Speaking of going to the swamp and taking on swarms, that's exactly what I did in the latest episode of my Let's Play! One method I have been using on the Swarms is to use a Frying Pan as a weapon. Since the Pans inflict Slowness, you can use the particle effects from the Slowness debuff to more easily "see" where the hitbox is for the swarm. I still died, though! >_>
If anyone's watching my Let's Plays from here, I hope you enjoy the newest episode. The last few have been doing pretty well with a few hundred views so I hope someone here is enjoying them
FYI: That symbol is called a section sign, and it's used for coloring and formatting text in Minecraft. It shouldn't have anything to do with the error you're getting, but it might... Hm. I hope Talonos figures out the problem!
This is used for, among other things, inserting Bold or Colored text into the Server Description you see when you go to play online. AFAIK it shouldn't be related to any error messages.
Thanks for the information DD. I'll remove the characters and see if I still get the error. That should narrow it down a bit. I assumed those characters were the culprit, but I'll verify to make sure.
When loading up my game I spawned on the ship instead of my chosen site. My inventory was completely blank but my saturation seemed to be the same from the last session. My knowledge of resources was reset and the game repeated the message about unlocks whenever I picked up a resource from my chest that wasn't default, but my hardcore quest progress was not affected. I'm not sure if it's an odd mod interaction or from a lack of memory available at the moment of loading (have 8gb, allocated 2gb, had a web browser open), but I don't remember doing or seeing anything odd before quitting. The only thing is I had a previous save named the same so maybe that's where the issue came from. I'm a bit apprehensive starting over if this is possible to happen again since loosing the leveled tinkers tools is painful, but I barely got started.

Spawn eggs and random chance. Look for the orange and blue eggs.
I was using the pans for a while, but I found pretty much any melee weapon is good. I'll have to check out your LP.
Found a bug of sorts. The material books think Thaumcraft-Quicksilver is the same as Metallurgy-Quicksilver, so if you drop some TC4-quicksilver on the ground then pick it up, the books think you have access to an Alien-level mining material.
I don't know if this is a bug or if I'm just whining about another problem solely with my game (starting to feel bad about that) but my quest book does not recognize that I have the South Ocean Silver badge so it won't let me complete the quest.

Is the badge in your inventory & have you tried clicking "Manual Detect"? I know this may seem obvious but I've gotta start somewhere if I'm to help you fix it.

Why is it that you can get the "tainted player" mob from animal bags? At least from a story perspective, it seems incredibly strange to me that you can get them from the ship's supply of animals that they brought from earth. Whether they brought it with them- impossible within the game's story- or they got them after arriving at the planet- in which case there's no good reason for them to not be carefully stored and separated out from the other animals- there is no good reason for them to be available from there.

It's in my inventory (I even tossed out a couple and got new ones from the scanner to see if it would fix it) and the Manual Detect button doesn't do anything, also there is no little preview of the badge you're looking for on the right side of the book like there was for the others.

Oh, that does sound like it's a problem with the quest book's task then. I haven't made it quite that far yet so I couldn't check to be sure.
You can manually complete the quest, if you don't want to wait for the next patch or a response from Talonos. (But I wouldn't bother unless it's the last zone you have to purify and you need to in order to complete the game)
1. Open to LAN with Cheats enabled, so you can use server commands.
2. Use command "/hqm edit" to get a quest book that's in edit mode; open it up and go to where the quest that is glitched is.
3. Shift-click on the quest for the South Ocean Silver Badge, and this will manually complete the quest.
4. Dispose of the Edit-able quest log, then Save and Quit the world, and re-open it (to disable cheats again! no cheating ).

Hey you blighters! (Don't be offended... It's a term of endearment for people playing Blightfall!)
Today marks the fourth installment of my daily Let's Play Blightfall series... And boy was this a doozy!
ProTip: Do not let Taint Spores grow right next to your glass dome, or you might end up with spiders teleporting inside of your bio-dome! The little suckers almost killed me... LOL

Uhm, is the translation device supposed to be consumed when you use it to translate something? The quest says you only need one! I used it to translate the journal scrap, and now I have no device.
Edit: Oh, the mining book says Alumite is alien hardness, but it's not, it's supra-diamond. Also, Tartarite is "manyullyn+" hardness which looks like it might be one step past "epic".
How do I deal with Hunger Overhaul? Everything I eat soon becomes useless, so how can I deal with it? Also, I cannot get the Smeltery to work. I have watched lots of videos on youtube and I do them excactly as they say to do them but it still does not work.

For dealing with hunger, you're going to want to set up crops to farm fairly soon. Harvestcraft has been installed, so there are also many more food options. When you get some food crops together, use NEI to search for the item and right-click on it to see what recipes require that item. Doing that should give you a better idea of the different types of food available - for instance, have you made toast yet? Even apples alone can be turned into a total of 7 different food items with just sugarcane and some tools (reusable).
For the smeltery, keep in mind that the controller must be facing directly away from the smeltery (not to the side), the lava tank must be on the same Y-coordinate level as the controller, and corner blocks do not count for determining the smeltery's construction.
For bugs: you can order in sunflower seeds from the supplier via "seeds". However, the supplier gives you the food item version, not the plantable version. The food item can be crafted into the plantable version much like most vegetable crops... except that recipe has been disabled here. Actually, the plantable sunflower seed doesn't even exist as an item.

so, a few questions for you about the new version that I did not see directly in the change log, but could have been hinted too.
- Did the Crimson Rites get added?
- With no way to the end/nether, have you added a way to get the shards for Ichor, or an alternate crafting method?

That particular quest is a known issue, it's been reported before. I can go back and find some of the reports and Talonos's replies, if you like.

Well, this is enough bugs to warrant a patch. Thanks a ton, guys! I'll start the patch tomorrow.

The information in the "Mining and Resource Collection" book for Infuscolium is wrong. I've found it under both the swamp and bio-dome beta.
