The new rails will have a number of features in the config for low-end users.
There will be a psudo 2D mode that removes an extra 4 cubes per segment and makes the rails look 2d. Plus you will be able to define segments per block between 4 and 20 (as it is right now, TC rails are at about 10 segments per block).
Since the TC rewrite is an extension of another mod (TiM), I'll be able to release it in a few months having just the rails so everyone can get started world building and providing feedback ahead of time.
And before you ask, yes TC's old trains work on the new rails, so do vanilla minecarts, and anything else that can use vanilla rails, (also I haven't uploaded the code for the new rails to TiM's git, so you can't test it yet even if you build it, not that it's stable yet anyway).
thats fantastic news i can run mc servers without blowing up my mates laptop:) and maybe still run shaders etc. as even though my pc is somewhat overkill my freinds who play mc with me run on potato pcs so its hard to build a modpack with all the mods we want without melting there pcs.
i run a personal modpack with 69 mods and i'm starting to see the lag lol
ya thats about the same size as my modpacks and i had a server where at the start i was able to run with shaders etc and still run it pretty well but once i built a large railway the fps was struggling even without shaders and thats high end pc. its a shame because said server looked soo nice with shaders. heres some screenshots from that world before it melted my gpu
wow that's pretty nice i guess you changed the rails for 2D for it to be playable right? i use worldedit for that mundane stuff
also congratz on your server i was planning to run mine too but configuring is tricky in SSP you just follow your own rules and even with friends but with open servers you have to configure everything
I have been cranking out classic style models lately after re-building the SD40(the original was not a true SD40 but rather closer to an SD40-2) I have patched up its clipping geometry and made it smoother looking all around, I have also made a proper SD40-2. The SD70 has also gotten a model cleanup and has a much better hood! Next I will be doing the GP40-2 and many many more seriously if we get textures on all these expect at least 15 trains or more in the next update.
In other news I am also re-doing the other TC classic diesel trains since a few are not accurate to their real world counterpart or don't meet the quality of the rest of the classic trains. I WILL be doing a F40ph(complete with cabbage) and I may also get enough time between all these re-works to make a F7 and F3 to the classic style that I know many have wanted. For coremods, the process is made even more difficult due to working with the bytecode itself. for instance, MANY mods didn't make an update from 1.7 to 1.8, because a LOT of systems were changed (many made worse), and updating mods is a LOT of work.

I was referring to the fact that porting to 1.12 right now isn't that good because 1.13 will come and all of these people will now say "when will you update to 1.13?" I myself play a lot of mods for 1.7 only and i'm not planning to upgrade anytime soon

I have a question regarding the F3/F7 Locos. The rear truck hangs out past the locomotive, can it be moved inwards slightly? or would that break the train.. Also, (and I apologize in advance if requests aren't allowed), I would love to see a Berkshire added at some point. (If you've ever seen the Polar Express, The locomotive in that movie was based on a Berkshire). The cars for said train would be interesting to see added as well. (Especially an observation car.)

then why did they update to 1.12 when it came out? just because it was the most recent i'm pretty sure 1.13 will be the same and 1.12 will suffer the same as 1.11
not every mod ports within days, weeks, or sometimes even months. depending on the amount of changes in a minecraft version porting a mod can require little/no changes, or a near complete rewrite. For coremods, the process is made even more difficult due to working with the bytecode itself. for instance, MANY mods didn't make an update from 1.7 to 1.8, because a LOT of systems were changed (many made worse), and updating mods is a LOT of work.

i think everyone misunderstood me
I know porting takes a lot of work (looking at you traincraft from 1.6 to 1.7)
I was referring to the fact that porting to 1.12 right now isn't that good because 1.13 will come and all of these people will now say "when will you update to 1.13?" I myself play a lot of mods for 1.7 only and i'm not planning to upgrade anytime soon
by that logic porting to any newer version would be a waste of time.

I have a question regarding the F3/F7 Locos. The rear truck hangs out past the locomotive, can it be moved inwards slightly? or would that break the train.. Also, (and I apologize in advance if requests aren't allowed), I would love to see a Berkshire added at some point. (If you've ever seen the Polar Express, The locomotive in that movie was based on a Berkshire). The cars for said train would be interesting to see added as well. (Especially an observation car.)
