I agree with you on that there's technically no difference between a Voxelmap version without an entity radar and the current Voxelmap version with entity radar disabled.
Yeah, it's the "entity" issue, and if someone wishes to turn those off within the VoxelMap config, the option is there. I think there is a "safe" version as well, or whatever it's called, I just don't bother with it. Someone else familiar with that "no entity radar" version is welcome to chime in. That is where it is important to distinguish between "a version with NO RADAR" and "a version with NO ENTITIES on the radar."
I know that you did not explicitly say so, but just in case you meant anything like it: I don't think that a minimap mod is a cheating tool in its own regard. A mapping tool is something that Vanilla Minecraft just lacks. Before I used a minimap mod, I had to resort to writing down the coordinates of my base, villages and other structures, because there was simply no way to keep track of them otherwise.
And don't get me started on that wretched Vannilla item. I can count on one hand the times I have crafted a Vanilla Map in Minecraft. With its low level of detail, it truly is that useless. It doesn't even have waypoints!
I know, and at certain periods I ran my server on Snapshot versions which implicitly means "no LiteLoader, no mods, no VoxelMap". While my players and I were happy to play with the cool new toys, there was quite a bit of grumbling about not having VoxelMap. My wife has threatened to break my paws if I put up 1.12.2 (due for release this weekend) before VoxelMap/ LiteLoader are ready. The only reason I mentioned "Vanilla" maps is because they *do* exist and they *do* provide a "radar", of sorts. My wife and I toy with the idea of going Minecraft: Windows 10/ MCPE where there are NO mods at all, just for the challenge. And Vanilla Maps would be all we would have. My wife and I know how to play the game that way, but she hates doing without VoxelMap more than I do.
Entity radars let you see non-static things that may otherwise require you to pay attention to your surroundings, so I could definitely regard those as cheat tools.
I use "radar" as I'm inclined. It's handy for various things, but I can do without it. My wife, on the other paw...
By no radar I mean NO radar. Using minimap or not it's still bannable on most servers JUST having a non "fairplay" version which fully disabled the option to use radar or not. On MOST minecraft servers radar minimaps are bannable since you could see where players are. If you don't have a fairplay version you would still be banned due to being able to switch on and off player radar. Do you not understand what I am saying? lol
I attempted Mumfrey's "hack" of the LiteLoader "litemod.json" changing "mcversion" to "1.12.r2" with the hope it would fly. Alas, it does not. VoxelMap likely touches something that was changed for LiteLoader 1.12.2. We will need an update when you are available to do so. I will see if I can extort money from my wife towards a donation. I'm not allowed to update our server until VoxelMap works for the new version.
EDIT: I posted a request for the players on our server to show support. I can't say they will, but I will make sure my wife considers supporting. I have to be careful how I shake the money-tree, but I really want to see continued development and interest in this project.

You have to "hack" the "mcversion" number. I did that, and it works for me. The problem I had with VoxelMap was that when I expanded it, certain files overwrite certain other files, and I'm not clear how to sort that out. So to make it work, I used 7zip to edit the .zip archive directly. There is a litemod.json file at the top level. Change "mcversion": "1.12.r1" to "mcversion": "1.12.r2". So long as I made the edit within the archive rather than "unzip" it, things worked fine.
It means (at least by what he/she said) that you just gave them a quick answer that at best was minimum explanation and didn't work.
What might help them is to look into how to perform the "method" you describe.
It does indeed work at least it did with all the mods I use. Though it took a little more with VoxelMap. However, methodology is the same. Just a few additional steps to saving the file back to the archive.
@shadowfal I used 7Zip to edit the file directly within the .litemod package, and it worked for me. I'm not clear what trouble @UpdateHelp is having. Hopefully, MamiyaOtaru will be able to get an update out soon, and this problem goes away entirely.
Alright well I tried inserting the edited litemod.json directly (without extracting, using a 7zip equivalent because lelmacslel) and it still crashed on startup. Thanks for the help anyways.
7-Zip, Open archive (the top one), litemod.json (double click), (second line of voxelMap) overwrite .1 with .r2. Save, close, and you're done.
It's worked 3 times with voxelMap, and once each with gammabright and mcxray.
What works for me.

It looks interesting, but my Spigot server and player base are not up to handling Forge mods.

Works for me.
I must have botched the hack. I'll try again tonight unless we get the updated version first.
When to update VoxelMap in my world? 1.12.2

http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding-java-edition/minecraft-mods/1290155-liteloader?comment=5865has a bit more information. mod_worldeditcui_1.12.1_00_lite_mc1.12.1.litemod (the WorldEdit CUI mod) works in either, and it makes a good template if you need help. Making mcversion "1.12.r2" by the way, means you can still use it with 1.12.1 if you wish "as is".
I had to make sure VoxelMap worked for 1.12.2 or my wife would break my fingers if I updated our server.
Can you please fix the "incompatibility" with TabbyChat that is shown here. It causes quite a large amount of spam.
Your method is still useless, perfunctory feeling
I don't know what this means.

I'm usually in trouble for saying way too much. Ooops.
I'm with ya
As I understand you can't just re-zip it, correct? What else would one have to do (besides renaming the mcversion in the .json) to get it functional?
I still can not use it in 1.12.2, all the methods are invalid

I have done that very thing (but with an OSX equivalent) and it is still crashing on startup if the voxelmap file is included.
I am contented with waiting until MamiyaOtaru updates it now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
