I just switched to Java 8 so i could use the new BF version, playing singleplayer, and now after a few minutes of play I start getting massive FPS drops when I look at forested areas. Like, if I stand at a beach and look out to sea, I get my usual 25 or so FPS, but when I turn and look at the jungle-density Tall Pine Forest behind me, it drops to less than 10. BF isn't the problem, it happens with both the old and the new versions, but does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it? It makes Minecraft pretty much unplayable.

Try Optifine 1.8.9 H3 its at the end of Opifine topic . Sp614x has added some new optimizations . Read his most resent posts

Optifine is incompatible with my favorite mods. Also I'm on 1.7.
Updating to latest Fastcraft fixed the looking-at-forests effect, but gave me an overall performance hit.

I hope this is compatible for you , look for the finished product , in the near future . All the bug fixed versions , will be in the posts near the end . Final or Stable versions will be on the download site . I recommend always getting the bug fixed versions .
I just tried out the version for 1.7.10, and there seems to be a problem with the short grass. The same problem also happens with the connected grass textures, but since TFC already has that feature I disabled it.
Invalid log blocks, or ones where the axis cannot be determined, will now be rendered as cube blocks instead of being invisible. There is a new config option, Round Logs / Default to vertical, which will render them round, with a vertical axis. This is turned off per default, to make it easier to visually identify problem cases.

That's actually governed by the resource pack, as described here. The default already includes fir trees, but it doesn't work with Highlands due to a bug (name check is case sensitive). I'll fix it.

AlphaeusXVIII's creations - the templates require the Ruins Mod to work (the screenshots obviously don't) and the README!.txt file is there for a reason. Enjoy now with templates for 1.8.8!

Guess I should've updated my situation: with the latest version, Thaumcraft's Silverwood and Greatwood logs work as intended. Only had the problem of the corners of blocks underneath the logs being kinda dark without Smooth Lighting. Nothing that putting it to Minimum didn't solve
I'm using the 1.7.10 version of this mod (2.0.3) with a 32x texture pack, and I cannot for the life of me get the mod to load the custom round leaf textures I've made. I followed the directions on the Curse Forge page, but it just won't load them.
Here's an example:
My oak leaf texture is located at assets\minecraft\textures\blocks\leaves_oak.png
So I put the round leaf texture at assets/betterfoliage/minecraft/textures/blocks/leaves_oak.png.
I still can't get it to load and I'm beginning to pull my hair out. Any advice?
i just found a glitch with the short grass. if you set it's maximum to something small (10 for instense) and yoou click done it will only load the short grass from where you were standing when you changed it. so it won't actually load it around you when you move. check screenshots if i'm not making sense ;p

That's vanilla behavior, I can't do much about it. Blocks are not automatically redrawn as your distance to them changes, but whole chunks are redrawn when they receive a render update (usually, but not only, if a block changes).
Setting the distance limit too low is therefore not very useful. In fact, I don't know if it's useful at all - I didn't really measure the FPS gain much. Try setting a distance of at least a few chunks, so the sudden change when the chunk re-renders is not too distracting.
Could someone please tell me why the grass on top got an different color then below?
How can I fix it?
It's a vanilla thing again, the caclulation of smooth lighting has changed between 1.7 and 1.8. I'd like to find a fix for it eventually, but it wasn't annoying enough for me to try very hard.
edit: now that you mentioned it, and I thought about it a bit with a clear head, it suddenly became obvious. The next version will fix this :).

Just thought I'd let you know that using this mod with Optifine in 1.7.10, causes the short grass to stop showing. I have tested all the versions of Ultra OF (A1 to D1) and none of them have worked and I have also tested the Standard OF D1. I tested this without any other mods btw. I have also fiddled about with all the settings relating to the short grass to no avail. Hope you can come up with a fix! I need to use OF but I love your mod too

sp614x did a silent update for internal testing . This version for 1.7.10 has most of the new features of 1.8.9 , it's a work in progress .

I just found out how to add greatwood and silverwood logs to the whitelist for the 1.8.9 version of Better Foliage
It is a bit confusing that they're named planks when they in fact are logs, but nontheless, this works:

I'm using version 2.0.2 and acacia logs are invisible. When I disable the mod, they reappear. Perhaps I am missing an ID somewhere? Thanks!

Just thought I'd let you know that using this mod with Optifine in 1.7.10, causes the short grass to stop showing.
