I'm sure it's been asked before, I did a search but thread search is broken at best.
Are ships, while "in transit", destructible like normal blocks? I.e. can they be axed/blown up/whatever...?
Reason: Was upset to see that you won't be working on combat, but if they are destructible then someone else can possibly make an addon for it PirateCraft would be saWEEET.

Sailing ships currently can't have any block changes. It was a technical limitation at the time, but I can probably get rid of it some day. If I do ship combat, there will be no health bars. =)

Yeah I think I remember reading about that limitation, not sure if it was from you or that other ships mod.
Was this the same mod/thread where it was not possible for generic blocks/machines/etc to function as normal while the ship "active"?
That's good to hear that you think it would be possible though. And yeah, no health bars - we need destruction! That would be an epic feat. How is this all done anyway? Is the "multiblock" transformed into an entity and model on-the-fly when movement is requested? Or have you done some intense core modding on the block renderer? Either way, block destruction/modification sounds like it'd be very complicated. But fantastic.
I can just imagine this mod working great with Imperium in a few years, providing our PC's can keep up... Merchant fleets and naval battles a-ho!

Blocks and things mostly work on ships when they're sailing. Except pistons. Some of the fancy redstone things don't work yet either.

Basically that.
Fancy redstone?
LOL, a button doesn't even work/ =P
Blakmajic actually did his old zeppelin mod so you could destroy your ships while sailing I think -though I have a little doubt, now.
Maybe I'll test it in a few days, if I have some spare time.

Cuchaz still has a lot of things to do before actually getting ship combat:
Dock blocks, airships, submarines,......

By all means, this is the best option. 1.7.10 is the friendliest version for people making modpacks i years. Pretty much every major mod is updated to 1.7.10. And it'll stay to be the most popular version for a very long time.
In all honesty I really hope that version 1.8.1 will be the final one. Not just for 1.8.x but overall. I hope that after 1.8.1 Microsoft will change Minecrafts policy, so modders can finally forget about updating and work on improving features.
Seriously. That's what should have been done since 1.2.5, when mods really started to pop up. Stop all work on new features and make this game modder friendly as possible. All code rewritten from scratch to fix all Notch "prototype" inputs.
And they are still yet to rewrite lighting code to implement RGB lights. I guess we can forget about this feature now.
I am not trying to be harsh when I say this: That would ruin Minecraft. The only thing that keeps the game so alive and so great is that it has several free updates every year. That is a huge, amazing, and essential part to the game. Also on another note: The past 3 updates have all been about plugin/mod API. So the game has been trying to get the "modder friendly status". You can't expect them to magically do it over night. They have to rewrite the entire game. In fact all of the new blocks/mobs/items are the smallest part of the update. So please get some facts right before you say that the Minecraft crew don't care for plugin/mod API. The past few updates has allowed for more modpacks, and more Server-things (like Sponge, which is a project that allows vannila clients to join modded servers). P.S I'm also waiting for the day they add colored lights in.
I disagree, it'd be great if Minecraft stopped updating. It'd give Mod loaders/API's/deobfuscators time to mature and improve, and mod makers will be more willing to go all-out and make some crazy mods and total conversions simply because they don't have to dread an inevitable update/rewrite for later versions.
There's pretty much nothing that Mojang can do that the community couldn't do themselves, if given the time. Heck, mods like this and Tall Worlds show that the community can and is doing *more* - what did 1.8.x give us new that mods haven't already - or *could* do already? New doors and fences, that's about it.
With that said, I highly doubt they'll stop releasing new major versions any time soon - and I am grateful to Mojang for their continued work, particularly the performance improvements. It's their own software so of course they are more capable with adding new features and re-writing the block renderer and such - but still, I don't think it would ruin Minecraft. It's not like we'd all stop playing or stop making mods. I mean, people still play and make mods for Doom. Great things never die.
EDIT: Last 3 updates have been about mod/plugin API? Says who? We haven't heard anything since July from Dinnerbone, and that was before Microsoft came along - so who knows what's happening there. I dunno why people are holding their breath for this, personally.

You haven't even seen the last few updates than. The ENTIRE game has to be changed first. That is why 1.8 and 1.7 were so long and brutal. They have to change every old line of code in order to create mod/plugin API. Look more into the past few updates. Take for example the block rendering. That is to make the game more mod friendly. The past few updates have not been about new blocks/biomes, it has been about mod/plugin API and improving the game. That is also why they have taken half a year to create, not like the normal 1-4 months normal updates are. The 2013 Minecon future update panel thing was mostly about mod/plugin API (and possibly seasons).
Also you got to realize that mods are not features. Mods will die out, will not get updated, and will have tons of bugs(sometimes). Features are permanently in the game, and can trust that they will be more polished and done than most mod features. Also the mojang team still has to change more code before any API comes out for modders. So leaving it at 1.8 would be terrible. As of 1.8 there is no magical mod API button that allows you to install a mod much like a texture pack. Thus much of the community doesn't know how to get a texture pack/skin, let alone a mod.
I've given my website, cuchazinteractive.com, a huge update today. The website has a lot more information on it about my mods now, and even has download links. The new and improved website should be a quick and easy one-stop place for everyone to get info and download all of my mods and tools.
Of special note is a new blog where I'll post news about updates and the like. There's also a progress page to make is much easier to answer questions like "ZOMG what are you working on now?" or "when are you releasing X mod?"
Let me know what you guys think about the new website. =)
Block Renderer was re-written because it was horrible, I was only modding for a week when I realized this. It's a game that's based on one man's experiment, the game is *still* largely using OpenGL1.1 code too - would a move to 2.x be because of an unconfirmed mod API too? There's no solid evidence of it, if's definitely a possibility but nothing has been announced as far as I know. Hence I asked for a source, not opinion - instead, we've just dragged the thread off topic.
Mods may not be "permanent features", but mods can be opensource (which I am a firm advocate of, when it comes to Minecraft mods) - so they can never die. Again, that's your opinion.
I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just disagreeing that on the claim that a final version of Minecraft would be "terrible". Terrible for console gamers and purists maybe, but great for many modders. And that's my opinion.
Looks like a v1.0 release of Ships Mod is not too far off! I've been fixing a bunch of stuff this week. I just got raining on ships to work correctly, and mobs to walk on ships. I'll probably make a new video with mobs walking on ships since it looks cool. =)
