I have two questions, and i dunno if these have been answered already: What happens if the water level goes above the edge of the ship or through a hole, and is it possible to make a submarine that can move in 3 dimensions (or at least make a submarine)?
Then the ship will sink.
Yes, submarines (when they are implemented) will move in three dimensions.
So what's taken into consideration when the mod figures out how high a boat floats? I find all of my designs ride way too close to the waterline (about a block off from sinking, in fact!) and I can't seem to determine why. I'm not going for anything uber realistic here..

Whoa... your water is doing something weird there.
Anyway, I eventually want to write some wiki articles that explain how all the ship physics work and educate people on how to build ships with the properties they want. Alas, it hasn't happened yet, so right now people are just trying to figure these things out for themselves.
The short version is, dense blocks are heavy and make your ship ride lower. Light blocks are buoyant and make your ship float higher. Some blocks aren't watertight at all, and water will pass right through them.
Eventually I think I'll make a tool that prints out these physical properties for every known block and post the result on a website somewhere. That would probably be useful.

Ha, don't worry, that was just a quick worldedit to show the shape. I was convinced that had something to do with it. And that sounds most useful, though what's the lightest block at the moment?
What might be a cause for concern, though, is opening a chest on an active ship generates this error in the server console:

whats max speed that you can get on a ship and can you show the build for that ship?
Build a very long ship, one block wide and 30+ blocks long. Then just alternate wool blocks in vertical layers down the length of the ship, such that each layer is offset by 1 block (you end up with a kind of checkered pattern when looking at the ship from the side).

Put as many sails as you can, with as few blocks below the water-level as you can (aka lighter ship), with as little surface area at the front of the ship as you can.

Sharkfin1997, Spanish Ships uses Black and Red yes see for yourself in google tags:Santisima Trinidad, French i think is black and white and they are Spanish allies. British uses Yellow Black, Russia uses Green and yellow, But i heared a nation with red and white color ships xD but i forgot. The use of those colors for ships was to say the difference between enemy and foe's like Pirate uses non color, But in 1830's ships was recolored to white and black till the end of sail era in 1860's, But idon't know why they uses the same color for all nations that is weird, and it's hard to say the difference between enemy and foe's, u could check those ships like Dvenadtsat Apostolov 1840 ship of the Russian Black Sea, it uses black and white, same as 3 decker Sinop. And you could see also in the Crimean war, or Krym Voyna that all faction that join the war uses the same color as for Ottomans.

Wow, thanks heaps for this information, it's actually really helpful. I was having such a hard time trying to get the right colours for Spain and France.

This mod looks incredible.
Am going to try it now, then going to see if I'm going to use it in my modded survival.
*Edit*
after messing around with your mod for some time i decided to try and build a ship(not the one I'm in, meant the one in the background), I have realised that i need a LOT of practice. but it was a lot of fun to sail this around my world. Thanx for an awesome mod
Honestly, you did not miss any thing. The discussion has only been about helping new users with the mod.

Dat feel, when you just get into knowledge that there's a real mod, with real ships - a dream of your life(not that nasty, useless kind of chaotic dissonance of Arch-Ships) and it's out of date. I'm crying a river. Dream to see it for 1.7.2, i'm kinda insane.

Don't worry, it's out of date because it's still in Beta test stage. As soon as that's done Cuchaz will update it to the latest version.
I will have to do a new showcase sometime soon.
till than i think i will finally try to take a look at some of your other mods.
Then the ship will sink.

Something like this...

With that kind of design in the earlier versions of the mod, you could get your ship to travel at ~100kmph (~60mph).

so no sail?
