here, my current run-about. Its a kind of Brig, a *very* compact Hull with only the necessary (Storage, Workshop, Cabin).
I have spent the last four hours travelling the seas, looking for a Norman "millenaire" settlement that i could settle next to.
Not found any.
But Killed a bunch of Bandits, and carrying a lot of loot.
Here what i wish i *could* move around in
got a 18 Bookshelf arrangement around an enchantment table,
ample storage, less claustrophobous, bigger workshop
and the dispensers are fired in sets of two.
Proper Captains Cabin too, and the steering wheel is under cover.
i am punching a tree and nokking on wood that your work and investment will one day permit me to use such a thing.
Wow, good job! They look really nice.
Those lanterns on your 6th rate, what mod are they from?
Not sure if this has been asked, but will it be possible to ride an iron boat across the Nether's molten seas? Or are your physics limited to water.
Also while it is true minecraft itself uses only a single core, I've heard mods suck as Thermal Expansion were designed in ways to, themselves, access more. Have you considered doing anything similar?
I think that we already discussed about that, and the conclusion was : we don't know.
However, you should consider that iron has a melting temperature of 1700 K, and lava's is around 1000 K.
So sadly your ship will be so mould that she will just deformate until she has no form at all. Moreover, she will trap you inside her and there will be nice side effects.
For example, you have to consider the thermal conductivity of iron, and you will quickly notice that Steve, inside his nice iron boat, will be exactly cooked as if he was in the furnace where he smelts his iron. The side effects ? At first, he will lose all the water he has in his body, and when he will be enough dry, he will catch fire suddenly. Only ashes will be left (what's the best: the sentence before or "only ashes will remain" ?)
So, your idea could be very interesting, and I would support it if you found a material that can resist to the heat of lava.
And, what do you mean by core ?
Do you mean a CPU core or something else ?

My foot !
No, I'm talking about the real world, but I remember you that Cuchaz seems to want to be as realistic as possible, without sacrificing gameplay.

I'm running the mod in a development environment right now. It runs differently there.
And that is...?Hey Martititi , you know how said you could let us all on your server? What if you just uploaded another world to your server so you don't have to risk your friends' builds and also I could MCEdit everyone's ships into one world and we could use that world. Just a suggestion.

The physics are the same (except for the extreme heat), but I'm not planning to implement lava ships. If I ever did, I think I'd have to introduce a high-temp ceramic material to make it at least attempt to be realistic.
Also while it is true minecraft itself uses only a single core, I've heard mods suck as Thermal Expansion were designed in ways to, themselves, access more. Have you considered doing anything similar?
Minecraft's main rendering loop and game logic appear to be single-threaded. I'm not planning to make any of the mod multi-threaded. There wouldn't be much to gain.
I like it, but to my personal taste it would look better to have a separate compass, or steering wheels without one.
Or at least not in the same GUI as the steering mechanics (Maybe on the top middle of the screen?), cause that long line makes it feel crowded.
The goal of the current helm UI is to be functional and extremely compact, so it doesn't obstruct the vision of the helmsman. I'm not really sure what you're suggesting. Maybe you should make a mockup of your idea so people can see if it's an improvement over the current system.
(censored)
(expression auto-censurée)
or "firetruck"
OK! I understand a bit more. =)
What dictionary do you use? A paper one or an on-line dictionary?
Normally "censored" in French is "censuré", but you give me "expression auto-censurée", which would be in English: "self-censored expression"...

You're absolutely right, but I found another option: since my server will be available only when I'm there, I can save the map every time I start it, so that if something is damaged, I can reload it with the former files.
Or I can simply trust you...
Anyway, for this server, if many people ask me to set it up, I'll let you know when I'm available to start my server. I think that you'll have to give me your Email addresses so that I can give you my IP address.

Maybe you should also consider adding a rudder for the realism ? (I know it is not necessary, but it can be strange that you can put the helm block everywhere on your ship).

I'm ignoring the existence of rudders right now. Since ships can rotate in place right now anyway, clearly that's not terribly realistic. Sure you can put the helm anywhere you want, but you'll want to put it in a place on the ship that has good visibility so you can see where you're going. =) Also, helms were attached to rudders by ropes and pulleys, so there was some flexibility in where it could be placed.
I'm fine with giving you my e-mail, Martititi, but what about MCEditing everyone's ships in? Because I definitely do NOT want to rebuild any of my ships, and the other guys probably wouldn't either. Also where does the name Martititi come from?

Fair enough. Just remember minecraft and total realism don't completely mix. After all, the nether is a place so hot water evaporates instantly, however steve can walk around in iron boots in no pain. Not to mention potions of fire resistance provide lava immunity.

These things are certainly true. Minecraft obviously wasn't designed around the idea of total realism. My goal so far as been something along the lines of: Try for realism whenever it isn't too inconvenient or un-fun.
Realism actually plays an important role in the mod, because it influences how you design a ship to perform a certain function. Speedy-type ships will actually have to be designed to be light and hydrodynamic. Cargo ships will require careful attention to the water line so the added weight doesn't cause ships to sink. I'm thinking that if I try to make a lava ship, the extreme heat should somehow become a design constraint as well.

A lava ship may benifit from a multi hull design. Minimizing the draft. A broad single hull for shallow draft would gather plenty of heat. If lava sailing ever catches on among world cup sailors, I bet they use three hulls or more.
I think lava sailing would compliment the spirit of minecraft well and open the Nether for the tourism.

My forum icon was painted by Frank Frazetta.
It is the cover art for a book by Edger Rice Burroughs called 'The Mad King.'
This is my small tribute to a great artist.
This is probably out of the grasps of this mod, even though you want to do something nifty with leads, but maybe some one more skilled than I could create an expansion pack consisting of ropes, cables, and pulleys, making steering a vessel by it's rudder or changing the direction of the sail a more complex and realistic task.
Another thing I don't know if I asked, but, are you considering adding ship engines? If so, will you have to have a complex system, or will it be just a block? And how will propellers work? Will they also be just one block, or will you implement realism and make it so that the engineer will have to create a custom propeller?

Will pasting projects work that well? I figured that you'd have to construct the ship in the mod itself, I'm not 100% sure on that but I could see problems arising by just dropping in some of your guys' large (and totally badass) vessels.

Multiple kinds of propulsion will eventually be implmented. Right now, there are just sails, but later I will implement some kind of propeller. It will probably just be a simple block. Although, I may make multiple sizes of propellers that create different magnitudes of thrust.

World editing will work. The mod won't know the difference. There's nothing special about the build process. The magic only starts when you click on the ship block and launch the ship.
In other news, I've updated the mod to Minecraft v1.6.4. I've also updated my old Power Tools mod to 1.6.4 as well.
All that's left is to package the ships mod for server deployment and find a way to fix all the obfuscation issues that I'm sure will happen.
Oh! Thanks for clearing that up, I guess I should start working on my own ship then I'm glad to hear it's progressing well! Hopefully things go smoothly for an early launch. Thanks for your dedication Cuchaz keep up the good work!
