Am I the only one who thinks that if you're going to take the time to code a mod, you should also take the time to make its' post look nice and make someone actually want to download it ? Have some self respect guys. You took the time to code this, now try to "sell" it to me !
A decent description is a MUST, doesn't even have to be super detailed. And a handfull of pics can go a loooong way. But "This mod adds the superest best new tech ever !!!" is really not helping anyone. And if your mod isn't finished, and probably won't ever be finished, why bother posting it ?
Its one thing to post your ideas and get feedback or see if there is any desire for your mod to exist, but if you just have a great idea and post it EVERY time you have one as a "mod in development" and then never write a single line of code, does it really need to be listed on CurseForge ???
I know posts like this are usually considered to be in bad taste, but I am just curious if I am the only one sick of the mod list being clogged up with a bunch of unfinished mods with no description, no explanation, no pics and no download...Is there even a logical reason for a listing like that ? Let alone 100s of 'em strategically placed randomly between listings of other possibly GOOD mods that one might actually at least look at and even download if they desire ??? Making it a laborious and tedious process to find new and interesting mods to d/l and try out...
I agree with everything.
But you forgot one part: modpack specification. Some people won't even list if they tolerate Modpacks or not and then threaten you to "take down your thread" even though they never said that they don't approve of their mod being in a mod pack.
And then Modded Maps.
Modded Maps are Adventure Maps, Minigames, blah blah blah, that use mods. This has never been specified on whether or not this counts as a modpack and the modmakers won't EVER put it up on their pages. Seriously, nobody has.
I'm pretty sure Modded Maps are not modpacks. Here's why:
A modpack is shoving a bunch of mods into one download, giving it a name like Hexxit and then showing it on the forum.
A modded map is using mods with a minigame/adventure map. People still have to download the map and the mods from their original creators.
It's extremely difficult to put something up when you're constantly being told that a modded map could be a modpack and you shouldn't release it until someone says they approve of it. Nobody says it in any of their threads, no matter how many times I ask.
It's extremely frustrating.
The reason Godzilla 2014 failed was because there was no Mothra in it.
Mothra is the only reason Godzilla is good. Mothra saved the movie industry. If Mothra never existed nobody would like movies. The reason many people hate Call of Duty is because it lacks Mothra.
I changed my name to MothraFanboy27.

Uhhh... this is a different subject and it isn't actually legal to include a mod in a modpack without permission anyways. Unless the page states otherwise you have to ask.

I hate to go into this, but it is legal if you don't have a license attached to your mod. Because it's free to download and is a mod of a game, if you have no license then it defaults to free to use, with no stipulations. Unless a page states otherwise you do not have to ask, so you've got it backwards.
Strictly speaking, if there's no license then it defaults to all rights reserved, and you aren't even entitled to download it, beyond the implicit grant made by publishing in public in the first place. Personally I think too many authors get their panties in a bunch over the mod pack issue, but if they don't want you distributing their work then you should respect that. For mods published under permissive licenses like the MIT, I think it should be fine to modpack without explicit permission. If the author doesn't like that, tell them to pick another license.
Per the original post, I totally agree about the CurseForge index. The mod forum here is more usable and of higher quality. And that's not exactly a high bar. I've always been a little confused why CurseForge isn't managed with the rigor of BukkitDev.
On the topic of quality posts, its true, well made posts go a lot farther then the average wall of text. however this is the internet and for every good mod you find, there will be 10 lazy ones. you just learn to see them, don't click on them, and they will fade out to be resurrected by a form necromancer 3 months later. its just how it is.
On the topic of modpacks, what most forget is this simple fact. mods take time effort and creativity, most modpacks don't. majority of modpacks are just a clutter of mods made for the "creator" to make a quick buck off of others work. Simple rule i use i use is:
Dose it have a server?
Is it original?
Was some sort of effort used in picking this?
Is it free (adfly included)?
If yes on all 4 then i give the ok on it. otherwise it is quite pointless the modpack.
