Forget about your magic boxes, this is as real as it gets
These days, tech mods are all about introducing the newest magic box to manage your ore processing, your mining, and your automation. Player's spend most of their time in GUIs, pressing buttons, and not enough time physically interacting with the world around them.
I had this idea a while back, and after asking the fine people in /r/FeedTheBeast (post can be found here) it seems many were interested in the basic idea/vision I had, so here it is.
The core idea of this mod is to take you back out of GUIs and into Minecraftia. Don't expect to be able to simply pump power and items into a box and have something happen. To get anything of use out of this mod, you will be expected to plan and construct actual infrastructures to get your desired end result. Less of pumping things in and out, and more of actually seeing the physical results of your actions and contraptions.
Pictures speak a thousand words, so this video should do more explaining than I'm able to at the moment
This mod is still in its infancy at the moment, and no where near where I actually want it to begin, but I wanted to start getting people's opinions on how I've begun implementation. Comments and criticisms are always welcome.
I highly advise people read the section on setting your preferred mod (found above), to ensure this mod works as smoothly in your world as it can. In short, this allows for the user to configure what mod's resources Industrialization's processing methods will produce.
I look forward to seeing not only what the community things of this, but what the community is capable of making from this.
This mod is really great! I just installed it in my world (crossing my fingers for no corruption) and built a fully automated processing setup using just vanilla redstone, pistons, and the hopper ducts mod. And it was so much cooler looking (and more fun to build) than just a pulverizer and a redstone furnace.
Can't wait to see where you take this, it has amazing potential!

If there's any corruption, please tell me, so I can beat my slav- err, I mean, fix the problem
This looks very nice and promising; will tag for later reference
Edit: some suggestions:
Maybe instead of having power (technically the pistons don't need it) there could be tiers and durability to the blocks that are used in crushing. The iron block can crush 'x'; and a diamond crushing block could crush '4x' or something.
This may not be possible as the moving blocks would have to store some kind of data...

I asked dmiller where to post ideas and he said in the Issue Tracker.

Regarding pistons, they're temporary. Eventually you'll have to use hydraulics to actually generate enough force to break the ore.
Anyone who downloaded and is missing textures, re-download! v0.0.2 Released!
Changelog:
+ Added version checker. Outputs to the console instead of Player chat to prevent chat spam
+ Ores can now be smashed from all sides, but need a solid block behind them (check documentation page for this version)
Bug fixes:
+ RenderCrash #4
+ Filter progress resetting #6
+ Filter resetting on world load #7
I'd love to see where automatic mining goes with this.
And i'm not thinking RP2 frames immediately. I'd like something "fixed in place" like a BC quarry.
Idea is better for sure than "magic boxes", but demands a lot more work and thinking from developers.
1. Machines in form of "magic box" are not very cpu intensive but your approach is. A lots of moving parts, even simple machine would strangle the cpu.
2. Now minecraft contains to little parts for new system. Pistons can be usable, furnaces also, but not a lot more, so everything have to be invented.
3. All new parts should be as universal as possible, so every one could be used in couple of ways/machines. (Like piston can be set in any direction and is in two variants: sticky and not)
4. If you don't want to be buried under tons of bugs it should be done some thinking about api for work (task) standardization. Interactions between blocks should be in some form of dictionary like ore dictionary from forge.
5. There is problem of size of the machine. Chunks boundary will be very, very annoying for players. Every "Magic box" can have inside inventory or even chest next to it so there is a buffer which caches items which cannot be processed further because of unloaded chunks. In your approach processing is divided on small steps and they cannot be buffered in same way.
All valid points, and I am trying my best to ensure the mod runs as smoothly as possible, despite it being potentially more demanding. I will keep these things in mind though.

Glad you're having fun with it though.
Forums derped, should be all good now

Thanks for the heads-up

I swear I'm intelligent.

This is exactly whats been frustrating me with the direction of tech mods.
+1
Looks like beauty is now a code!
Mind dropping any hints on what else you're considering in this? It'd be awesome to play Minecraft as GUI free as possible.
