Well, most people playing this build circular infusion setups, usually with 8 pedestals, and that tends to work out well. The trouble comes when you try a 5- or 3-item infusion, since most of the ways you'd try to create symmetry with that won't work.
Somebody posted on this subject to say they were using 12 pedistals, and they implied 12 was a very good, stable number for some reason, and the number of crystals, skulls, and such should be lower than 12. I don't think they gave any reasoning behind the claims, but I first tried an arrangement of 8 pedistals in very close to the core, with some candles and crystals outside of that inner ring, and when I read the post, I rebuilt to a ring of 12 pedistals. (Not just because of the post, but because I'd noticed the harness needed at least 9). I also made the ring larger radius this time so I could put some stabilizers inside and some outside. It seems to work pretty well, but I don't have any real idea which changes I made mattered, if any.
I interrupt your discussion on symmetry to report a bug that has made my world vanish from my world selection. I was trying to pick up a chest with the Dislocator foci. Is there a way to make it so I can continue playing? I have made quite a bit of progress in this world and do not look forward to starting all of that over.
Well, the Dislocation Focus is from Thaumic Tinkerer. You might want to report that to Vazkii. Maybe copygirl as well? It's probably not directly their fault though.
I must say right now research has become infuriating trying to link up all the runes. I know the three aspecs needed, I know where their runes are on the page, but no matter how I arange them they will not all link up! I have gone through several ink wells, and many MANY aspects and have only gotten ONE research to actually compleat, the rest seem to play 'keep away' with the linking line taking the most dumbfounded paths avoiding the one that is clearly made.
I understand fully how this research system works, I've done my own research and watched enough videos and reading the wikis and cheat guides.. but I still cant 'connect the dots' so to say.
I liked the old system better TBH, this one is just infuriating. When you are running around for over an HOUR one -one- research to regather ink and aspecs because the connect don't want to behave... I swear some of these are made more then not to be impossible.
If you already have a clear path for the line and it is taking another route, why not use one of the other runes on the page (unused in the research) to block the line? That doesn't use up any of your research points. And yes, there is a chance to get impossible researches. Some people seem to have really rotten luck with them, and others (like me) have only had a couple through multiple worlds...
[Edit] And if you're taking an hour to complete a research, then it is probably not possible.
Angels are bright, though the brightest fell. Though all things foul would wear the brows of grace; Still grace must look so.
And by the way; Who is John Galt?
I have done that, but it don't always work and for me I'm having horrid luck.
Just say this, I have a 'cant finish' chest of research notes... 11 of the 16 slots are filled. The fact that I stocked a chest filled with ink due to this annoyance is proving my bad luck.
The REAL trouble starts with the nine item fusion for, what is it, the thaumostatic harness? That one is especially bad since that usually necessitates placing another pedestal and breaking the symmetry of pedestal placement.
Nope the REAL trouble starts with Thaumic Tinkerer and items that require 12 pedestals and has inherent dangerous instability and also require vast amounts of essentia in jars....full ones. You'd better have a couple of jars for that since one tic of runaway infusion means you cannot complete the infusion.

A chest of ink? I used about a half stack. You're doing something very wrong.
Very basic stuff, but I'll spoiler it anyway
I did well with a systematic approach. Try all the aspects, one at a time, with the research note. Then you know what aspects are usable, and how many runes each provides. Then look at the note and plan a route along the nodes. Each rune can get you two horizontally and two vertically. Move things into place. Then turn all the runes on and move anything blocking.
Often it's hard or impossible to complete the note (typically when the active node is toward the center). In that case, toss the note (I did my research on a balcony and literally threw them over) and use one of the cheap aspects to get another note. Sometimes you have to do several.
Try to get the improved research discoveries early. They save on ink and aspects. But even without them you can just chug through.

Geographicraft (formerly Climate Control) - Control climate, ocean, and land sizes; stop chunk walls; put modded biomes into Default worlds, and more!
RTG plus - All the beautiful terrain of RTG, plus varied and beautiful trees and forests.
Trying all the aspects is rather wasteful, and rarely necessary. It's better to focus on what elements seem like they'd feasibly fit the research in question. Once you have a good idea of how many there are, work out if you have enough without actually moving any by counting how many spaces you would need to bridge.
Really though, it's all a matter of practice. Once you have it down you'll never need more than 3 points in any aspect (2 if you have research mastery), and will be able to spot whether research is feasible before you even start it.
Usually the aspects required are hinted by the research title and subtitle. Although sometimes you may have to take it literally, other times figuratively.
A classic example:
Clicking Aqua for the Axe of Stream. Despite it saying rivers of wood in the subtitle, you'd never think it is actually Aqua, not Arbor, the aspect that lights up runes in an axe. But there you go.

I'll spoiler this for the sake of it:
Aqua was obvious to me, as it's pretty much a given based on the name alone. I'll admit, I did try Arbor as well, but Aqua was my first choice simply because of what it is. Honestly, there's not many researches that have aspects that weren't easy enough to figure out. The only one I can think of right off the top of my head would be Essentia Distillation using Limus, but even that wasn't much of a stretch for me.
I've been trying unsuccessfully to hold on to some tainted materials. Tendrils and Goo invariably dissolve in your inventory and it's only when I successfully carry them to a chest that I can actually store them. Thankfully the backpack mod has been helping, but I was looking for a more legit way. Or is it that you can't simply hold on to these items until you stash them on a chest?
Tried jars and flasks, nada. Is there some research along the line that will allow me to store it in time for the crucible or distiller?

I was trying to think of a signature and this is what came up.

Magic hand mirror, Ender Chest, or play "hot potato" with it all the way home. (That is, drop it and pick it up every 30 seconds.)

I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.
any 1 know how to remove the magic biome after u plant a few trees I am getting bad lag after I turned some of it to that biome and I want to remove it if I can
I think I met one bug on my friends' private server...
I ALWAYS bring my thaumometer with me when I explore, and I explore a lot, and, well, when I had scanned more than a thousand things, my character was unable to login anymore. I had to manually edit my character file to remove some of the things in the list to be able to login again (I removed the 400 odd Nodes that I had scanned, so I should be good for a while).
I'm actually quite surprised to find nothing about this elsewhere on the Internet, so maybe it's just doing something weird with one of our other mods, but still, it's weird and mildly annoying. :S
By the way, thanks for this awesome mod! It's one of my favorite of all the ones we have on the server!

One thing you can do is plonk down a chest next to wherever you're gathering this stuff, rush all of it to the chest, then when you have a big stack, rush that home. Since each stack only loses one at a time, you should arrive with most of your loot intact.
If you just want Vitium, though, a better solution is to just set up a slime farm near your house. Instructions here, and hazards further down the page.
You want a farm, you grab a hoe. You want a boat, you grab some wood. You want a fireplace, you grab A FLAMING HELL-BOULDER BECAUSE THAT'S HOW MINECRAFTERS ROLL!!!

Well, that's not really what I asked. But thanks anyways. (and 30 seconds? Nah! It's usually gone well before that)
The travelling trunk would surely be ideal for this purpose. And uses no mods other than TC and vanilla.
(Obviously Tinkers Construct, Forestry, JABBA, Backpacks, BetterStorage all provide "mobile" storage).
The other option is to simply co-locate an arcane distillery near the tainted area / source of tainted stuff.
Keep calm - and mash buttons.
