Thanks for all the support and kind words folks. I was honestly expecting more rage, but I guess we built a pretty cool little community here.
Look at that, some dust must have gotten in my eye.
Thaumcraft was the reason I purchased Minecraft. It was the first mod I am interested in, and defined my Wizard-like Minecraft experience.
It's sad to know this, but I am here to thank you for all the joy (and anger i guess, with the evil infusion altar mostly) you brought to me and my friends. Wish you good luck during study! Looking forward to your future projects too!
Please consider letting others to inherit your works and pick your successor carefully
P.S.: I can get storm-rage if that could stop you from putting Thaumcraft on hold. XD Always great to have you in the MC community!
There is such a strong addon community for Thaumcraft that a committee of the best of them could readily be cobbled together to rebuild this mod. I actually need Not Enough Thaumcraft Tabs to support my list of addons and I was a bit selective with them. One of the best features of this group was integration with other mods, both tech and magic.
Mods the scale of Thaumcraft, like Buildcraft and IC2, need a team to support them and their addon communities. Burnout and other aspects of Real Life intervene from time to time and need to be dealt with.periodically. That way you can rotate new people in as others depart to preserve a level of continuity.
I think it's better that new magic mods get created. Stagnation is a huge problem, as seen with all the "backport to 1.7.10" complaints and how buildcraft and IC2 are unused/boring due to not being updated and changing hands too often.
Thaumcraft has remained popular because of it's phoenix style rebirth that shuffle the features and add new things while abandoning others, creating a new mod every MC update.

Yeah I remember every time an new edition of thaumcraft was released I would be a bit sad that something I loved from the old one was gone, however I would quickly find that it had been replaced and by something at least ten times more awesome that the old.
Thanks for all the support and kind words folks. I was honestly expecting more rage, but I guess we built a pretty cool little community here.

Azanor,
I've been following Thaumcraft for a few years now, but created a forum account for the first time here just to chime in with many who've said this already: I think you've got your priorities right where they ought to be. Take care of family and your life overall.
You've created one of the most compelling, visually and thematically interesting mods I've ever encountered for Minecraft. Certainly one of the most polished and complete feeling. You've made a tremendous contribution to the community at large, and I sincerely hope things work out such that you're able to return to modding again in the future and continue raising the bar of excellence for the community as a whole.
In the mean time, again, it sounds like you've got your priorities right where the ought to be. Best wishes to you and yours.

I wholeheartedly agree, take as much time off as you believe you need. We can wait patiently for a new Thaumcraft, whoever it comes from. As long as they have your permission of course, heh. Have a wonderful vacation from modding, you definitely earned it. Who's feeling like starting a GoFundMe to fund a great vacation for Az?

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
I must say, it's sad to see such a beloved mod go on hiatus, but there is still hope, already there are several instances of a potential successor for thaumcraft, most notably magistics and project thaumic.
Despite me having virtually no appearance in the thaumcraft community, this mod has, and always will be one of my favorites.
Thank you Azanor, for your amazing work, you will be missed.
Man it finally happened. I knew that this day had to come but I'm still so sad. I 100% support you Azanor on your decision to focus on your own life from now on and I want to thank you for pouring in everything you had to make THE greatest mod Minecraft has ever known. I'm no expert on licensing and all that but if you are able I would be overjoyed for someone to take the reins. Thaumcraft is a masterpiece that, as many have already said, shouldn't die. Words can't describe the hours of enjoyment you have given me and how much respect I have for how amazing of a mod developer you are. I wish you luck and happiness in life.
Years I've been gone from Minecraft, longer since I checked this forum...only the rare glimpse into old servers with old friends, to see what new tidbits Mojang had added, before hopping off after a half-hour or so. Yet in all that time, I knew that if I ever returned to Minecraft, your creation, your masterpiece would be one of the only key certainties to where I would decide to start, Azanor. I don't think that I ever will play this game like I once did, but what you created in Thaumcraft inspired me deeply, and was one of the very first sources I used to begin understanding game development at a deeper level. Your dedication to intricate lore, hinting at things beyond what the player can yet learn...your constant focus on bringing actions out of GUIs and into the world itself, while still understanding what's better-handled without that transition...and perhaps most of all, your establishment of a sense of permanence in progress and growth as the player delves into your work...I've seen whole games not reach this level of cohesive quality, let alone a mod for a game that seems to do everything in its power to hinder their development. So know that in any future projects of mine, no matter how big or small, I'll be thinking back in some way to my days sitting by a distiller, waiting for crafting tables to break down so I could crack open a bit more reasearch.
Thank you, Azanor, for everything that you've done, and everything you will do for the world of gaming. We stand now on the shoulders of giants, and one of them happens to be a raygun-toting jellyfish. Stay safe, keep your chin up, and enjoy all the wonders life holds for you in these coming days.
Thanks for considering my mod as a viable succesor for Thaumcraft, but im afraid that it isn't. It seems that i am not made for modding Minecraft
Trust me, i have tried MANY times, over course of few years. Best of my possibilities is a simple "yet another ore and tools" mod. I'd recommend to check out "Pengu's Lost Thaumaturgy" instead. It is for 1.11.2 and it is much further in devolopment (Backport to 1.10.2 should be really easy and i can attempt it myself). https://minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/lost-thaumaturgy
Furthermore, it needs to be stated clear that Thaumcraft is not an closed act. Azanor might "hire" other mod devolopers to help him. Some modding masterminds like McJty and Elucent already stated that they want to help.
ah, apologies on not being up to date there, I'm not too sure about azanor passing the torch, but we shall see if he does
I hope it gets open sourced or something, but whatever decision Azanor makes is cool. Creative Commons licenses are pretty flexible in giving content creators control over their IP while still allowing collaboration and sharing. I'm grateful for all of his hard work over such a long period of time, and I'm still going to keep playing TC5 because it's a great game. It would be super cool to get the current version compatible with 1.1x, but whatever happens, it happens. We still have an awesome mod to play no matter what his decision ends up being.
(I'd buy the crap out of standalone Thaumcraft game, just saying~)
Thanks for all the support and kind words folks. I was honestly expecting more rage, but I guess we built a pretty cool little community here.

Azanor, I was expecting more rage too when I first saw TC on hold. Glad to see that not all Minecraft players are so hostile as I thought, maybe there's hope for this community yet.
And while it is very sad that Thaumcraft won't be coming back for awhile, all I can say is good luck with wherever life takes you! And choose carefully if you decide to pass the torch, Thaumcraft has a reputation to uphold y'know.
(Not saying I'm opposed to you passing the torch, far from it. I just don't want to see this amazing mod grabbed by some idiot who can't design mods worth crud. lol)

I hope someday there's more magic in Minecraft, though I know it's not likely to happen. In the meantime, I play modded a lot. I enjoy a lot of other games too, so don't expect me to be on the forums all the time.
Azanor, I can imagine that this was not an easy decision for you to make but I think it is the right one when your heart commands.
As some wise people said, we should not cry because it is over but smile for such a great time we had together and a great time we had!
Maybe some day you come back, maybe not or maybe you give 5.2.4 into the hands of a fellow modder like williwillus who ported botania to the current minecraft.
whatever you decide, be well, live long and prosper
Bite the hand that feeds us?
I made a D flip-flop!
Great to see you, o mighty Azanor.

IF you do make a game of your own... will it possibly be thaumcraft inspired?
I believe he has stated that we could possibly see thaumcraft as its own standalone game in the future.
However, I don't think if that will exist, it should actually be called Thaumcraft.
I made a D flip-flop!

Would you perhaps consider open sourcing TC, then? Someone could pick up the torch on it.
He's been thinking on it. People like McJty have been offering to do so as well.
