Yeah, I like the idea of gauntlets being a sidegrade better at doing certain things, or doing things the others can't. As an off-hand, I enjoy it a lot. I can't stress how much I'm glad you're considering doing off-hand stuff, it has a lot of magical potential for little gizmos and devices that could be used without hindering the player's main function.
EDIT: Staves are your heavy lifters with foci, not necessarily just combat.
I could imagine gauntlets being more like a tehnical instead of battling equipment, maybe to collect or work with some more aetherial resources, stuff that you can't hold with your physical body, just like normal tubes can't hold essentia.
On the other hand, it might be usefull to punch some intangible vis-ages, thaumirages, etherevanants or ill-ley-sions in the face if shooting it with magic doesn't work.
Or wand focus (hand focus? palm charm?) excavation, punching trough walls with ease, great for RP
Hmm how about a wand focus " world grapple" - you would stop in midair when used, than fall when used again or switching to a different item.
Maybe it could fail if you are falling/moving too fast, I'm imagining a gauntlet stuck in midair while the user continues falling.
Death by butterfingers.
Maybe if the gauntlet's in your inventory it always shows on your arm?
It wouldn't really be immersion breaking though. It's consistent within the minecraft world, After all you can take entire armors off within a few seconds.
Internal consistency is more important than pure realism when it comes down to it in the end.
Though your world grapple reminded me of when i was in the nether and was shot at by ghasts, and i wondered: What if you could use the grappling hook(or some variation of it) to latch onto the fireballs, Swing them around, Then slingshot it back at them?
I am considering making the gauntlet an off-hand only item meaning you can still have a tool or what-not in your main hand while flinging spells with the off-hand.
Personally i'd prefer if it remained a main hand item and replaced the wands as the primary tool of the thaumaturge. (Mostly because i prefer it being on the right hand. : P)
I just think it feels more inline with the Thaumaturge concept of discovering magic through scientific rigor, More than the wand that is.
Especially when it involves strapping a Thaumaturgical machine onto your back and hooking it up to the gauntlets.
One idea would be that wands were the early game, Before you understand how magic works and Gauntlets became the mid game version.
I mean, Why would you keep using a wand when you could improve it? It's in the Thaumaturges blood to take a look at something traditionally used by wizards and then take it apart, figure out how it works and then put it back together in a more efficient, And clearly understood, Way. I'd imagine that a wand, While having a lot of directed power, Would lack a lot of fine control that a thaumaturge would require for all their precise machinery and tools.
In the end though, I want it because it would look cool. Gauntlets 4 Lyfe yo! he he.

better idea, make one for each hand, one could be used for a defensive spells and the other could be for tool/ combat spells. get some spell-fu going on.
For the most part I was just thinking of it being a cosmetic change with gauntlets replacing wands.
The main issue would be making it look acceptable. The trick would be to make it still fit in with the MC aesthetic and not make it a high-poly model, but at the same time it should look cool. A lot easier said than done. Steve's lack of fingers is problematic
I don't really have a clue on how models/items work, but I think the minecraft style would work just fine. For example if it was possible to do something like this(see attached) but with a little flare like the wands had.

Omg! After so much time, this mod is taking the turn I wanted to see!! That's awesome Azanor, keep on moving on

This sounds brilliant! I can finally live my fantasy of hurling fire cultist while I cut him down with my Zephyr blade!
That looks fine as heck. Once again you've outdone yourself. Now let me use it in the mainhand.
The only part i can say to change is to lower the gems height by one pixel, Currently it sticks out a bit much.
Unless it's meant to be a foci sitting there and not a power gem or something, in which case it's good the way it is.
In all seriousness, It looks very good. Fine job.
Looks impressive and has the brassy feel to it, but from the model, will the casts come from the back of the hand? That makes sense for shields, but... When people usually use magic from the hand it's the front? Not criticising, just commenting. It's amazing either way.
What's with the chest sculpture, though? And I see the Thaumometer is back to looking good?

I was starting at Alex for a good five minutes thinking what chest sculpture before I saw the sculpture of chests and hoppers in the background...
Hmm, looks nice but I'd personally smooth some corners on the gem so it feels less cube-y, maybe add a gold line from the gem to the knuckle line and possibly make a the edge where the thumb would be a bit extended, so it breaks up the whole "swiss roll fingers" design.
Other than that it looks nicely themed for thaumcraft.
So what's it made of? Looks like gold/brass, leather probably and a terra cluster?
The chest sculpture is me filling chests with random items for scanning purposes (yes, scanning an inventory now scans all the items inside it as well).
It is pretty hard to control exactly where stuff emit from in a consistent manner. For the most part it will be pretty much the same as the wand so don't expect things to actually come out of the gem. The limits to vanilla minecraft's animations are annoying at times.
Edit:
It does look like the whole modular rod/cap things will be going away as well as the distinction between wands, scepters and staves. Since arcane crafting no longer requires a wand there is no longer a need for sceptres anyway - Casting gauntlets (wip name) will just be used as a multitool and for using foci.
There will be tiers of casting gauntlets, but their only difference would be recharge rate and vis capacity (so far). The meat of modularity will now lie with the foci.
Why would you need to get rid of wands? Why not re-purpose them as batteries inserted into machinery? Magical conductors in their own right, Just paint some crystals on the outside and they will gladly release (or receive) their energies into their surroundings. Half the time they don't even melt your face! After all, There's no need to waste good knowledge.
Plus, The look on the faces of those 'classical' wizards when they hear we use their 'sacred' channeling tool of magic as basically Fuses/Double-A batteries would be priceless!
Also: Scanning whole inventories?
You 'da man, Man.
And don't worry about the animations being fixed coming out of the front, It's easy to imagine the focii's energies are being redirected through etheric conduits and out of emitters in the palm/hand. (Which might actually be a idea for the upgrade system.["-"])
Either that or you're knuckle-pushingly punching the magic out of your fist.
["Upgrade parts suggestion?:
Etheric conductors (where magic flows from and to the focus/energy storage)
Frame (Brass frame, Thaumium frame, Etc. The rim and stuff.)
Other etc,
One of the neat things would be if it was upgraded or components were exchanged like the TMD in Singularity(game).
I mean, Unlikely, but i always loved the way those little arms removed/Lifted off, Moved around and put on/Attached new parts.
One of the cool parts of having a machine that exchanged parts for you would be that you could customize it at demand, Changing and upgrading your components as you wish. Perhaps even, Whereas wands had to be upgraded, The different variations of components merely had different things they were good at? After all, Human hands have limitations, Unless you spend years like a watchmaker at honing your craft you probably won't have that much fine-control."]

The green gem is a focus.

I like the design, but focus looks a little bit unrealistic (it like a cube).
I play only with the top notch mods only, which instantly excludes orespawn and lucky blocks.
Your ammo are bullets-Admiral Bahroo 2016
Technically it is half as cuby as the wand version was

Muscle wizard casts fist.
...Seriously though, think you overexaggerated how bad it would look.
Any idea how the crafting would work?
Praise be Ro-naza, greatest among the thaumaturges!
I smell void metal gauntlet.
I pray thee, Azanor, if at all possible, let us have fishing golems back. Those were extremely useful.
The gauntlet looks spectacular. Much better than any wand.
Why does that phrase sound like Hak Foo from Jackie Chan Adventures?
Anyways, back on topic: Gauntlets are looking even better. Maybe look to other modelers to get some other models as extra options.
