I understand what you are talking about, but the main reason I think there should be a split is because it wouldn't make sense for a star mage to go around killing everything or a void mage to somehow wield light based power. My idea is that the two sides have similar enough mechanics that one doesn't need the other but that they both have their unique quirks because of the nature of their branch of magic. Star stuff is harder to craft and more laborious but void stuff is easy but has warp and other negative effects. An example of this would be that to clean up taint a star mage makes plants that are able to consume taint and grow while a void mage would create a portal to the abyss that consumes all of the taint in the area but leaves the chunks desolate while being much faster than the star mage's stuff.
So I have been toying around with a few ideas (because thinking about TC is about all I have time for most days).
One of these has been a complete rewrite of TC from the ground up. I'm not just talking Thaumcraft 6.0 here. More accurately it would be Thaumcraft II.
In the past most of my updates have built upon previous versions and in general mechanics between versions had been evolutions instead of complete redesigns. This time around I am thinking about fundamental changes with only some of the core concepts and the flavor of the mod remaining the same.
The question is: should I? I usually get a itch to shake things up during a big update push, but this will probably be one of the biggest departures yet. Would you guys be cool with something like this?
You are probably wondering what I want to change. Honestly, I am not 100% sure yet.
One of the basic changes I am toying with is turning the whole burn-items-for-aspects thing on its head. I have floated the idea in the past with mixed opinions.
In short: Instead of breaking complex aspects down into simple ones it will work the other way around. You will start out with primals and combine them till you get the aspects you want. Burning items for aspects might not even survive this change - raw primal essentia will probably be gathered for worldgen crystals initially and later using some aura related mechanic. See what I mean with big changes?
What is your opinion on all of this?
If your RL stuff is still keeping you too busy to code, it won't matter much but... From a player perspective, the first response is: how much longer would this take vs finishing the 1.9 port? If a 1.9 port isn't too far away, it'd be a shame to waste the effort you already made on it. Then you could maybe do the rewrite for 1.10 or 1.11 since those are already coming and AFAIK you haven't already started updating anything old for them yet.
Those changes themselves seem fairly neutral from the perspective of fun. I've always wondered why there was no way to combine aspects into more complex ones so you could go in both directions in aspect complexity (if you can break, why not combine? If you can combine, why not break?) But since there are cheap renewable items to burn with extremely complex aspects (crafting tables), it's never really made the mod difficult to work with. Keeping things one directional, but reversing the direction would be neutral there. I'd be curious how you'd balance the difficulty in collecting the primal aspects since some (especially aqua) are much more difficult to get directly than the others.
Thanks for keeping everyone updated. We're very interested to see what you decide!
Another added note: The void mage is more about consolidating power rather than sharing it. The above mentioned rift would actually be connected to a device that allows the void thaumaturge to collect the power from the taint to use for their own devices. The Star thaumaturge would be converting the tainted biome into a magical forest so that everyone can use the inherit energy that flows from such forests.
WHEN YOU COME TO IT AND YOU CANT GO THROUGH IT AND YOU CAN'T KNOCK IT DOWN
Okay sorry, I'll stop.
Just some thoughts on your thoughts:
1. The "CHOOSE YOUR PATH, ORDER OR CHAOS" idea was mentioned before indeed, but I fear it would cost Thaumcraft a huge deal of depth(especially in SP) by limiting the content and would severely limit the player's creativity, especially in singleplayer. Maybe it would be an idea for a multiplyer-optimized mod.
2. Your "Aura node inside oneself" may be an idea for another mod unless Azanor will change what this mod is about at the core, because if you look at it, Thaumaturges do not have any superpowers... okay they kinda do with Warp, but what we do is reaching godlike powers purely by using Knowledge, building a shell of Thaumaturge's tools around ourselves. Your idea would be to give the player himself superpowers, which may not fit the theme of this mods... though admittedly I idly made a lot of bridges in my mind how it might work.
No problem. I found what you had to say somewhat inspiring and similar to what I would like to get out of the mod (except for the mage type stuff, that doesn't "feel" like thaumcraft as much as it would feel like ars magica). Also being a fan author, I have had similar ideas flowing through my head without any definite idea as to how it would work.(i'm working on rewriting my first book at the moment).
The main reason I support the split is that it allows you to tell two stories and allow two different view points on magic in game, but I think it would also be nice if you could try to mingle between the paths after one is complete or you can be satisfied with your path of choice, allowing there to be grey, white, and black thaumaturges, depending on the preference of the player.
So I have been toying around with a few ideas (because thinking about TC is about all I have time for most days).

What is your opinion on all of this?
I've always enjoyed any version of Thaumcraft I've played. If it's something you're interested in doing, I say go for it and don't let negative opinions limit what you see for Thaumcraft. There's always going to be people who enjoy what you produce.
Now in terms of gameplay, the hypothetical Thaumcraft II sounds like it'd be a lot less alchemy/aspect oriented and more aura-centered. I'd be fine with this change, but I'd like some alternatives that wouldn't be based on the aura, but have some more limitations/costs associated with them. Whenever I've played any iteration of Thaumcraft, I've always tended to avoid doing anything too crazy with the aura just because the source of Aura was never fully explained/understood and I like to imagine that by using vis, you're draining some unknown force from another world (Think some Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 alchemy source level crazy). I've read and really like some ideas like being able to infuse/unlock an inner aura-node and be able to draw from that as a source of vis (even if it wasn't necessarily spellcasting). I could ramble on and on, but I feel like I can sum it up by saying I'd like anything that comes out of Thaumcraft as long as it provides more interesting lore and gameplay elements.
@Azanor, before committing to a Big Rewrite: make yourself a story map. Get a firmer idea of what it is you might accomplish. Look at all the "stories" you create ("redo golems so they're more like X,Y,Z" etc), prioritize those tasks in terms of cost/benefit.
Include a couple people you trust in the discussion when building and prioritizing that board. Whatever you do, do not make it public; don't include the community.
Once you have that story map done, you'll be able to tell really quickly if a Big Rewrite is still the way to go. If it is, you'll also have a really decent idea of how to attack it (a story map can give you a great picture of what components may need to relate to one another, helps you decide how you'll abstract chunks of your code)
I installed a clean download of minecraft to start over from scratch, and installed the forge linked on this page, then the mod, However upon trying to launch I get this message,
I have the exact version the message describes, and have reinstalled the forge multiple times, and continue to get the same message, like it dosint know im using the version it asks for.
Here is the log of the problem.

How about, instead of 'order and chaos' being two different paths, having two different methods of research? Order requiring the current method, whereas Entropy uses the old 'sacrifice items' method from TC3? It doesn't lock you off from either branch, but the Entropic side is you sacrificing multiple items to complete destruction in order to learn something. Entropic is better for things like researching new alembics and other 'destructive' things.
We already have the warp mechanic that everyone tries to edge around, and that's fair, having an Ordered version of those tools that takes a ton of levels or research would be nice, but you'd also have to balance it by being much more materially expensive too. It's always harder to do the right thing.
I'm a bit late to the Thaumcraft 5 party. Can anyone tell me what the "you have gained practical knowledge of <aspect>" results from the Thaumometer actually do? No matter how much I search, I can't seem to find an answer to this. It's clearly not unlocking new research or adding new information to existing research. There's a different message for those anyway. So, what IS this "practical knowledge" and what does it do?
If it's not unlocking new research yet, it's because you need multiple aspects, or other gates for the research it would assist. (It's also possible that the aspects you've learned so far don't have any gates associated with them. I wouldn't be surprised if Azanor made it a general mechanic for all aspects, regardless whether the particular aspect is used for a gate.)
I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.
I usually end up going with a recommended version that's newer than the build he used. Ends up working. Did 1558 with TC4, worked out just fine.
The problem comes about because, well, "most" mods for a particular version of minecraft work correctly on recommended forge versions. Both because the mod authors have - with recommended versions - a stable version of forge to develop/test against, AND because non recommended forge versions contain api changes that have not been bug fixed by the forge team.
So, as it stands, Thaumcraft for 1.8.9 requires quite a recent version of forge, but Chisel 2 only works correctly on recommended forge: For whatever reason Forge for 1.8.9 has a lagging recommended version, and the Chisel 2 devs don't seem interested in releasing a fix until they have a stable target so, for now, my server can't have Chisel 2.
I don't know when Azanor stealth patched/implemented a new feature, but I like it.
Fibrious taint can burn. And spread the flames. And die.
Now I know why taint prefers the upperside of the bedrock ceiling in the nether.
YES! Now we can just burn the fibrous taint away and not have to worry about gathering an immense amount of resources to craft ethereal blooms or getting a crapload of silverwood saplings for pure nodes to contain the taint. Now it's just destroying tainted nodes, and sucking the flux out of the aura.

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
I am actually taking my time to properly think things trough this time and design a proper structure for the changes and consider all the possible ramifications. In the past I've just tended to start working on major changes only to discover unintended problems or balance issues - usually when it is too late to reverse the changes.
As for those asking that I update first and then start working on something new: That is fine and well, but my limited time is forcing me to choose one or the other - I won't have time for both.
Still, I have not yet committed to "Thaumcraft II". I am still seeing how it will work and how the balance will be. If I am not satisfied with the results and I will just do a port of TC 5.
I made a D flip-flop!

I installed a clean download of minecraft to start over from scratch, and installed the forge linked on this page, then the mod, However upon trying to launch I get this message,
https://gyazo.com/91f2fbe624f46f89ceeabfa9f1be7c85
I have the exact version the message describes, and have reinstalled the forge multiple times, and continue to get the same message, like it dosint know im using the version it asks for.
Here is the log of the problem.

The log clearly says your Forge version is 1722, not the 1738 the message tells you to get.
You forgot to change your profile launch version, didn't you?
Gotta admit Thamcraft is extremely strict with forge versions.
I made a D flip-flop!
Azanor does have a ... bad habit ... of developing against not-recommended forge.
I usually end up going with a recommended version that's newer than the build he used. Ends up working. Did 1558 with TC4, worked out just fine.
I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!

Does anyone know of any public servers with TC5 on them? I've been having difficulty finding one.
You can apply for whitelist at https://thaumcraft.duckdns.org/
, you just need to enter your email and username, its pretty much public.
YES! Now we can just burn the fibrous taint away and not have to worry about gathering an immense amount of resources to craft ethereal blooms or getting a crapload of silverwood saplings for pure nodes to contain the taint. Now it's just destroying tainted nodes, and sucking the flux out of the aura.
