The idea is that i should check if there is an item on each slot for each step of the process. Once i have a certain number or there is none to be processed in each step, i can change the gearbox using an "Autonomous Activator" from Thermal Expansion with a "Screwdriver" inside it.
As a suggestion, changing the gearbox from torque to speed could be implemented as a method too.
I broke the auto activator, and auto switching is reserved for CVTs.

No problem, i was just trying to get a bit of automation early on, before getting to the bedrock stuff.
Using the autonomous activator worked as expected for me, but since i can't detect the inventory inside the extractor i probably will have to use a timer for each step.
Also i suppose the computercraft compatibility is not on the top list for fix and features? I tested other machines and got more bugs. Unless of course i'm doing something wrong.

ComputerCraft support seems to break within days of fixing it, and has done so for the last 20 versions or so; I am starting to lose interest.

As I've already said once already, I've unlocked it. I see the entry - that's how I knew how to craft the thing. The book gives vague descriptions of how things should be set up - it doesn't give any clear documentation on pretty much anything. The only way I knew how to set up the altar properly was from the screenshots on the website. I'm finding this mod incredibly confusing and frustrating - I'm having difficulty figuring out how to do things, even when I'm asking questions clearly here. Please, someone just tell me what the heck I'm supposed to do?
Edit: I've even unlocked the research for the item casting stand (that's the tier of casting that requires pylon power, as I understand it), yet I still can't craft the fricking chromatic flowers.
Everything has been repeatedly and clearly explained. Your table was insufficiently leveled up because it was not used enough. Casting stand crafting is not pylon crafting.

Listen, I am absolutely not trying to attack you or your mod. I'm just trying to understand it so I can have an enjoyable time. The book didn't tell me that I had to level the table up by using it, the website didn't tell me that, and up until just now, nobody explained that to me directly either. (No, I didn't read through the other 905 pages of this thread, and the search function is broken.) Like I said, I'm just trying to enjoy myself, and have had a bit of frustration while doing so - I'm not trying to attack you, and I'm not one of those people who dislikes you and your mod. I'm just pointing out the small flaw in how information about how to use the mod has been relayed to the player.
Your question has been answered, you are free to leave now. If you get any more snippy you're gonna end up on Reika's wall of shame.
Reika's clearly isn't for you, they are meant to be super complex endgame mods with limitless possibilities, all of this adds up for a very frustrating experience, it comes with the territory.
The documentation isn't there simply because no one wants to write it, until someone does and strives to keep it more or less updated as Reika updates his mods, which happens fairly frequently, then asking here is all you can do.
Casting Tables gain experience as you craft things. If you craft enough, they level up (become a higher tier). Simply building the next level of casting complex does mean you'll be able to craft those new recipes, your table has to be a high enough tier. The diamonds in the upper right corner of the GUI indicate the tier. In the Lexicon, each item is categorized by in which complex it must be crafted. Make sure what you've built and your Casting Table are both of the appropriate tier.
Thank you for your informative answer - I don't see any diamonds in the GUI of the table, so I'm assuming that means I'm in tier 1. Is there any indicator on the table or elsewhere that might give me a clue as to how far away I am from the next tier?
You posted an image with one diamond, so "I don't see any diamonds" is false.

The shape that is named diamond, not the minecraft item named diamond. It's in the upper right corner of the casting table GUI.
oh wow.... so that's what we're supposed to do, my buddies and I have been headscratching for the last month on why the other fragments wouldn't appear.

As far as determining how far you are from the next tier, if you turn on the config for displaying tileEntity info when pressing Tab (the option is in DragonAPI.cfg, IIRC), then you should be able to check your casting table's xp, as it's saved as an NBT tag. If I'm reading the code correctly, the xp amounts required for leveling up are 250, 2000, and 15000, although right now I'm not able to verify this in-game, so I may be completely incorrect.
The second tier of complex is required for the second (edit:third) tier of crafting. Do you have the fragment for a Casting Temple? I believe its the one with gold blocks in the middle of each side and redstone in the corners.
I have now unlocked the second, slightly gold-coloured diamond, but it has a red cross through it. A bunch of other recipe pages also have crosses through them, which seem to be indicating that I don't have the correct structure set up around the table. I've double checked and it seems to be correct. Is there anything else I need to do before I'll be able to craft?
Your structure is incorrect.

No, the second tier needs the first structure.

Check that the blocks at the top corners of the level containing the lapis blocks are different than the block at the bottom of the pillar beneath the lapis block. The former should be either engraved/embossed, and the later should be the other option. Can't remember which is which off the top of my head, but they are very similar looking, and from your screen shot, it looks like they're the same, which would be your problem.
Ah, you need the blocks around the casting table. 12 blocks go around the casting table at its same level. You'll need to look in the book for exact placement.
That means you're missing fragments. Go sacrifice a bunch of villagers to a pylon to get new fragments.
Also, be sure to check the very bottom of the lexicon, as that's where the structure fragments are placed.
The plot thickens.
Try turning off incremental saving—save-off. I have a similar problem with the Nether, and though I haven't narrowed it down to a single mod yet, there seems to be some kind of loop where it's continuously saving/reloading some of the chunks. It's not any of Reika's though, at least not for me; still happens with none of his mods installed.
If that works, you can throw a save-all at the server every couple of minutes. Careful, though; with save-off, stop will not make any attempt to save anything.
Please let me know what your results are.
Do you mean info fragments, or some other kind of fragment? Because I have about 38 info fragments sitting in a chest, but nothing happens when I put one in my inventory.
Info fragments. I'm fairly certain they only get programmed the first time you place them into your inventory. If they fail to get a recipe then, then they're garbage. No need to keep old blank fragments. You need new ones and they'll only get something if you have sufficiently progressed.
If you have the Casting Room info Fragment, then you have the required information. To view it, scroll all the way down in the lexicon and it should be in the very bottom row.

Ah, right, first tier is just the table by itself. Of course, otherwise you'd have to cannibalize pylons to build the structure.
Compare with the blueprint.
