EDIT: Looks fine. A ladder can only rest against solid blocks, so it will become free-standing if no solid face is against it. The odd rotations are likely due to the direction you're facing when placing them.
Smart moving has never worked as far as I know. The mod makes significant changes to accommodate mod ladders and not even I could pinpoint the problem when sifting through the code (of Smart Moving).
I'll check attaching garage doors to bottom of stair blocks. It should work, unless I check for solid blocks and not just solid faces.
EDIT: Works fine on my end attaching underneath Carpenter's Stairs. If it's problematic with vanilla or mod stairs, that's a different story and not something I have any control over.
As for fences as skin blocks -- not really. You can test overriding it by inputting the block's display name in the configuration file (look for Cover Exceptions). If it's a simple texture, it usually works just fine. If it's vanilla fence, which is composed of boxes, it will just appear as a solid texture and probably won't work the way you expect.
OK, I didn't think fences as skins would work. But I hoped it might be possible, because iron bars work.
As noted, I already found I can work around the door-under-stair problem by using Carpenter's Stairs. It necessitated some minor reconstruction, but w00t, opening windows! That alone would have been enough to justify adding your mod.
Smart Moving ... yeah, I can work around it by using the hotkey to temporarily disable Smart Moving. That'll have to be good enough. I really just wanted to be sure you knew the problem existed. If it's not readily fixable, it's not readily fixable. C'est la vie.
I'm not sure what's going on with the weird ladder rotations either; it actually seems to depend upon the orientation of the stair block. (Hmmmm..... I did not test THAT against Carpenters' stairs. I'll have to try it and report back.) Again, if it's not readily fixable, it is what it is, c'est la vie. Still an awesomely useful mod.
(And they're still better than vanilla ladders. Vanilla ladders are so annoying....)
There is a Carpenter's Block wedge.
A Carpenter's Block can be collapsed into a slab.
Is there any way to make a slab-thickness wedge? Say, if you want to make an octagonal platform that is slab thickness?

Closest is the collapsable block, which will let you shape it into a wedge. But, it can't do the oblique exterior slope shape you'd need for the octagon.
Well, a slab is 8/16 step, but the collapsible can only do 7/15 or 8/15, so it won't match up. This restriction is due to how I split up the available bits initially. They've expanded to 32bits since then, but reworking it would require converting existing stuff... basically it's not a trivial task. I'm too lazy to work on something that takes longer than.... an hour?

I don't need an oblique slope. All I need is a regular wedge, except only a half block wide instead of a full block. If I could take a regular block-cut-in-half-on-the-diagonal wedge, and whack it from the side to make it slab thickness like you can with a carpenter's block, that would be perfect.
Here, this will illustrate what I mean:
Just like that ... except slab thickness. I don't think there's a way to do it...?

Hey Towelie. Thanks again for the support through Patreon. Sadly, it's not a money issue -- it's time. And difficulty. The mod relies on rendering methods that were axed in 1.8 in favor of a simpler JSON-based model system.
Though, lately I've seen some amazing content pack alterations (that even include sloped pieces), so perhaps I'm not giving the new system enough credit. Who knows?
I have had offers to port it by some reputable folks, so we'll see what happens. In the meantime, if you're a fan of Minecraft PE there is a new port soon to be available. As soon as I get around to updating the site (tomorrow?).
Serving you since 2013, this mod is the ultimate builders tool when needing to create spectacular structures. Ordinary blocks like sand, dirt, and planks are used to cover this mod's blocks. Carpenter's blocks mimic whichever block you cover them with, but in entirely new shapes! This allows you to break free from blocks that have static styles and shapes, and to create a truly customized look.
The mod draws inspiration from many sources, including SuperSlopes and Dawn of the Modern World, while also adding unique new features to vanilla blocks you all know and love. An exhaustive list of available options is available in the tutorial section of the official website.
