MickKay, have you considered adding a configuration to your mod that would allow players to choose to have scenter search for ores within a distance from the player, as opposed to by chunk? For example the current method would be default, but with a config option set to true, scenter would search for ores that are within a configurable distance from the blocks the player is occupying, based on coordinate integers? A few other users have expressed support for this function. What do you think?
Do you know the search distance can be configured? Path is *.minecraft/config/Scenter.cfg.

S:detectionRange=11x11.
Mine is at 11x11 (yours probably 3x3). Once this updates (1.9) I'll change it to 15x15.
I'd also like to report a crash I just had in my game. I accidentally hit the "previous" button instead of the "activate" button and Minecraft just did not accept that.

Yes I am aware of that, I have used this mod in the past.
Really neat mod. Was just wondering if you could add a keybind changing option in the 1.8 version? using it on a server with some friends but can't get it to work as it interferes with my map mod "O" has the same keybind and the map favors it. any changes/things I don't know about that can help me?
This is the homepage of the Scenter mod.
Scenter is a universal mod for Minecraft.
Use the Scenter mod if you want to find (scent out) hidden ores in Minecraft.
Features:
With the Scenter mod you can easily find nearby ores, like coal, iron, diamond, and more.
How does it work?
Whenever you interact with the environment (with left click or right click) Scenter searches 3x3 chunks (that gives 3x3x16x16x256 blocks) surrounding Steve. When it finds a block matching the selected target block, it marks the direct path with a colored particle trail.
By pressing 'O' you can select the target block from the following list.
Preconfigured target blocks:
Coal Ore
Diamond Ore
Emerald Ore
Gold Ore
Iron Ore
Lapis Ore
Redstone Ore
Glowstone
Nether Quartz Ore
You can extend this list by editing the Scenter configuration file (see below).
Keys:
O - Activate Scenter / Switch to next target block
Install Forge (you have just to double click the minecraftforge-installer-*.jar file and follow the instructions).
Locate your .minecraft/mods folder (if it's not there you have to run Minecraft with Forge at least once)
Copy the scenter-*.jar file into your .minecraft/mods folder
Play
A Note to Server Owners
Since version 3.2.0 this mod can be installed on server also.
Its main purpose is to propagate its configuration to all clients running Scenter when they connect to the server.
This makes sure that all clients have the same configuration.
However, a client-side installation is not required to connect to the server.
And of course, a server-side installation is not required to run Scenter on the client.
This section describes how you could configure Scenter, version 3.1.0 (or later).
Please note that Scenter has two separate config files.
scenter.cfg - This file contains the Scenter settings (but not the targets)
scenter3.targets.cfg - This file contains the targets (the names of all blocks) that Scenter can find.
To configure the Scenter settings:
Locate your .minecraft/config folder (if it's not there you have to install Forge and Scenter, and run Minecraft at least once)
It is a good idea to make a backup of "Scenter.cfg" before you edit the original file
Open the file "scenter.cfg"
Read carefully the comments next to the setting you want to modify
Make your changes
Save the file
Enter a world
List of settings:
Display: (can be defined on client side only)
D:hudX - The x coordinate of the HUD (Head-Up Display). Valid is anything between 0.0 (left) and 1.0 (right). Default is 0.05.
D:hudY - The y coordinate of the HUD (Head-Up Display). Valid is anything between 0.0 (top) and 1.0 (bottom). Default is 0.05.
General:
S:detectionRange - The number of chunks that are searched by Scenter. Valid values are 1, 3x3, 5x5, 7x7, 9x9, 11x11, 13x13, 15x15. Default is 3x3.
B:enabled - Set to true to enable Scenter. Set to false to disable Scenter. Default is true.
To configure the Scenter targets do the following:
Locate your .minecraft/config folder (if it's not there you have to install Forge and Scenter, and run Minecraft at least once)
Open the file "Scenter3.targets.cfg"
Make your changes (see below)
Save the file
Run Minecraft
To add a new block as a single-block target:
Scroll down to the end of the file "scenter3.targets.cfg"
Add a new line with just the block name
Optionally append a comment (marked with '#') to this line
For example:
obsidian
adds obsidian as a new target to Scenter.
If this single-block target is chosen during gameplay (choose it by pressing the 'O' key multiple times) then Scenter searches the environment for the nearest occurrence of blocks with exactly this name and marks the trail to it with floating particles.
For a list of block names please see below.
To find out the name of a specific block:
With Minecraft 1.7.x Mojang has replaced the numerical block IDs with (unique) block names.
The following spoiler contains a compiled list of all vanilla Minecraft block names.
However, other mods might add custom blocks to Minecraft.
To find out the names of these blocks do the following:
Run Minecraft with Scenter installed
Enter a world
Enable Scenter (by pressing 'O')
Quit Minecraft
Open your .minecraft/logs folder
Open file fml-client-latest.log
Search for the line containing "[mickkay.scenter.ScenterMod/Scenter]: These blocks are registered:"
Below that line you'll find a list of all registered blocks.
Find the block you are interested in and copy the line into the config file
For example, add:
pixelmon:Bauxite
to add Bauxite from Pixemon mod to Scenter.
Blocks with blank characters in their name
Sometimes there is a block with blank spaces in its name. To add it you have to encpasulate the complete name inside double quotes.
For example, add
"opalsplus:White Opal Ore"
to add the white opal ore from OpalsPlus mod to Scenter.
To add multiple blocks as a multi-block target:
Add a new line with a comma-separated list of block names
For example:
lava, flowing_lava
adds a new target for stationary lava and flowing lava. If such a multi-block target is activated during gameplay, then Scenter searches the environment for any of those blocks and marks the trail to the nearest one found.
To add a block subtype as a single-block target:
Add a new line with a the block name followed by a slash '/' and the corresponding subtype ID (also known as 'damage value')
For example:
wool/14 # Red Wool
adds red wool as a new target. (The '#' marks the rest of the line as a comment which will be ignored by Scenter.)
To add multiple block subtypes as a multi-block target:
Add a new line with a comma-separated list of block subtypes
For example:
wool/14, wool/4, wool/6 # Red, Green, and Blue Wool
adds a target for red wool, green wool, and blue wool.
To use a custom color for a specific target's particle trail:
Locate the line with the target you want to change.
Insert the desired color code right after the block name(s), but before any comment ('#')
The color code must be specified as HEX value (but without any leading '#')
This section describes how you could configure Scenter, version 2.x.y .Please note that Scenter has two config files of which actually only one is effectively used.
Scenter.cfg - This file is unused by Scenter 2.x (it contains only a version tag)
Scenter.targets.cfg - This file contains the target definitions for all blocks which Scenter can find.
To configure Scenter do the following:
Locate your .minecraft/config folder (if it's not there you have to install Forge and Scenter, and run Minecraft at least once)
Open the file "Scenter.targets.cfg"
Make your changes (see below)
Save the file
Run Minecraft
To add a new block as a single-block target:
Scroll down to the end of the file "Scenter.targets.cfg"
Add a new line with just the block ID value
Optionally append a comment (marked with '#') to this line
For example:
49 # Obsidian
adds Obsidian (having block ID 49) as a new target to Scenter.
The comment ("# Obsidian") will be ignored by Scenter.
If this single-block target is chosen during gameplay (choose it by pressing the 'O' key multiple times) then Scenter searches the environment for the nearest occurrence of blocks with exactly this ID and marks the trail to it with floating particles.
Add a new line with a comma-separated list of block ID values
For example:
10,11 # Lava
adds a new target for stationary (10) and floating Lava (11).
If such a multi-block target is activated during gameplay then Scenter searches the environment for any of those IDs and marks the trail to the nearest one found.
To add a block subtype as a single-block target:
Add a new line with a the block ID value followed by a slash '/' and the corresponding subtype ID (aka damage value)
For example:
35/14 # Red Wool
adds red wool as a new target.
To add multiple block subtypes as a multi-block target:
Add a new line with a comma-separated list of block subtypes
For example:
35/14, 35/13, 35/11 # Red, Green, and Blue Wool
adds a target for red wool, green wool, and blue wool.
To use a custom color for a specific target's particle trail:
Locate the line with the target you want to change.
Insert the desired color code right after the block ID(s), before any comment ('#')
The color code must be specified as HEX value (but without any leading '#')
For example:
10,11 FF0000 # Lava
sets the Lava target's color to red (FF0000).
You might want to use the Online Color Picker to choose the color code.
