Thank you so much, Mapwriter, the second way of making the shortcut worked perfectly, though I had to change the memory code from 1 to 2. I'll fiddle around with it a bit to make sure everything's good, but so far it looks amazing.
I'm currently working on a project requiring MapWriter. To that goal, I added an API to enable overlays in MapWriter.
More info here.
When everything is to my taste, I will push the API to the mod author so everyone can benefit from it.
Looks good! I'm sure a lot of people will appreciate the slime spawning and chunk grid overlay.
Great work on the mod and the API
Map overlays is one of the features I'm missing most switching to Mapwriter. I'd like to see where hostile mobs are on the mini map. So if you guys could make this happen, that would be awesome.
Also is there a way to display north, east, south and west on the rotating circle mini map? With the non-rotating mini map it's easy. North is always up. But with the rotating mini map I find myself disoriented at times. On multiplayer it's often easy to just say: head north and you'll find X.
One more thing. Is there a way to scale the font-size of the coordinate text? The default seems a bit large on my HUD. It would be nice if we could set the pixel size somewhere.

Font size: YES
NESW on minimap: YES
Mob Radar: NO*
*One of the things I really LIKE about Mapwriter is that it doesn't show mobs, which (IMO) is kinda cheat-y and removes a lot of the challenge/fun from the game. I understand that not everyone plays this way, so if Mobs and/or players are added to the minimap PLEASE add a server-side switch to turn this off.
One of the things I miss when I use Mapwriter is the in-game waypoints. Zan's/Voxel and Rei's shows them as spots and/or beacons. This makes navigation very easy.

I agree that options like this are probably best when they can be configured so everyone can play the way he or she prefers.
One more thing I'd like to see is players. How often do you hear some one say: "Come over here!"
It's really useful if you can actually see where that person is.

I'm having an issue on 1.6.4 where all the grass and leaves are grey. All other blocks are coloured and jungle leaves (not sure about other exceptions, haven't explored much). No other mods/texture/resource pack, nothing. Hopefully It's a stupid fix, cause it's driving me insane... >:I
Hi there, I love the idea of this mod but it lagged very badly for me, in a way that no other mod on my install has caused. I am running on a laptop, but it is only a couple years old. It can run a heavily modded install with decent framerates, albeit with the graphics adjusted accordingly. However, multiple tests confirmed that whenever this mod was installed, I got 3 fps not matter what graphics settings I had. If you need more information from me I would be happy to provide it, I would love to use this mod.
I am really loving this mod. I have a few suggestions, some that I see others have mentioned as well.
Waypoints visible in the world (as with Rei's and Zan's MiniMaps) would be great
Ability to change the "T" teleport command for added waypoints to "/warp Name" (where the "name" is name of the warp on the server/map) instead of "/tp" as not everyone has the authorization to teleport. With this would have to be support for spaces (currently converted to underscores when used)
Not sure if this one is possible but the ability to "draw" on the full map GUI and assign that area a specific resource pack. Basically, I can draw a line enclosing an area and force everything inside that area to use a specific resource pack texture and the other areas use another. I play on a server that has different resource packs for multiple areas and it would be nice if the map could display those. It can in a certain way right now the implementation isn't the greatest.
Again, not sure if even possible but maybe the ability to force the minimap to draw areas not discovered, possible ability to link it with a dynmap to fill in those areas you haven't been.
I also have no idea what the "dimension" option means, anyone know?
Also, is there a way to force the map not to overwrite parts of the map when in a different realm on the same server? I have parts of my main realm map being overwritten when I warp/go to another realm.
I much prefer this map mod over any others. Seriously great work creating this!
My thoughts on how to improve the mod are similar to many other peoples.
1. Select which worlds waypoints are shown in when they are created. (I have a problem with waypoints in the normal world displaying in the twilight world)
2. Maybe make a fancier GUI for changing the settings (you probably hate people always comparing to rei's minimap etc. but that's a good example of a cleaner and easier gui)
3. In-game beacons, markers etc. that you can see in the distance to mark waypoints (toggleable)
4. Make the mod work on modded servers as well (sync map between client and server)
5. A zoom button that can scroll through zoom levels in the minimap between a min and max zoom. Some people may prefer this over having a zoom in and zoom out button. I like both.
6. Some sort of drop down group display selection panel on the large map. Currently you can have specific groups, none or all and it could be good to be able to show some groups but not others.
I'm using the 1.5.2 version at the moment so forgive me if you've already done some of these.
Once again, thanks for making and maintaining this awesome mod!

Why the heck is mapwriter copying all the region files .mca into its folder? It's bloating my save-folder unnecessarly up.
It's an issue for me, because I use dropbox to sync my savefolder in case of crashes or emergencies.
The mod uses the region files to store where you have explored. Storing the block ID's is necessary so that the map can be reconstructed when the texture pack changes, which is not possible when storing the map as rendered images.
In single player a copy of the region files are made so that if I make a coding mistake your world won't be corrupted
It's not ideal though, I've been trying to think of an efficient way to store only the blocks necessary for map reconstruction, so maybe in the future will be able to reduce the disk usage a bit.

Does it speed up again when you hide the map by pressing 'n' a few times? Also how much RAM does your laptop have? Maybe it's out of memory and thrashing the disk.
How do you zoom in/out in the underground view? It's like super-zoomed in by default. I've tried using the zoom but it only affects the regular map above ground but underground seems unaffected.
You can't zoom the underground view unfortunately. I'm working on a replacement, or rather am thinking about a replacement, but it's still a long way off.

In-world waypoints have been suggested a few times, I won't have time to add them any time soon. But maybe someone else will...
In ".minecraft\config\MapWriter.cfg" there is a line in the "options" section like this:
S:teleportCommand=tp
Change it to:
S:teleportCommand=warp
To make MapWriter use /warp instead of the /tp command.
Wow didn't know servers could do that. I don't think I will be able to support areas of the map having different texture packs with the way MapWriter is currently designed, at least not without a huge amount of work that is better spent elsewhere.
Not possible unless you have access to the server's region files. If you do then you can copy the region files to the ".minecraft\saves\mapwriter_mp_worlds\<world_name>\region" folder (overwriting the existing ones). Then zoom out in the Map GUI and press 'R' to regenerate the map from the region files.
You can switch between the Nether and the Overworld by scrolling the mousewheel when hovering over the 'Dimension' box. There is a bug currently that sometimes causes the map to zoom to a far away location, but you can re-center by pressing the 'home' key.
Yeah realms are a pain. There is no way for a mod to know which realm the player is currently in, so not much I can do to support them in MapWriter
I much prefer this map mod over any others. Seriously great work creating this!

Good suggestion, that should be fairly easy to implement.
Haha, and here I thought my options GUI was pretty good, keeping with the Minecraft look and feel and everything. Oh well
Yeah one day hopefully.
It should work on modded servers already, are blocks added by mods not showing up?
Hmm... I guess that would save a key binding. I could make the normal keys 'wrap' so that when you press 'zoom in' at max zoom it will wrap back to min zoom. Then you could just unbind one of the keys.
Minecraft doesn't have a drop down list widget available unfortunately. Might be able to create a list of buttons like the Options GUI on a separate screen though. Then you would just click to enable/disable specific marker groups.
I like this mod a lot but the underground view sadly leaves a lot to be desired. Wish all these map mods could come together to make the ultimate one. They all have nice features(rei, zan and this). Just a shame they do certain things well and others... not so good. Zan for example has a terrible fullscreen map and great options to cover all ranges of your needs. Mapwriter has an amazing fullscreen map with the "black" areas you haven't visited. It's been a while since I last used rei but that one had a huge issue with rendering the nether, a reason I stopped using it.
Agreed, the underground view is pathetic. I've been meaning to replace it for a long time but just haven't got around to it yet.
In ".minecraft\config\MapWriter.cfg" there is a line in the "options" section like this:
S:teleportCommand=tp
Change it to:
S:teleportCommand=warp
To make MapWriter use /warp instead of the /tp command.
I found the option in the cfg file and changed it, it does now use the "/warp" command instead of "/tp" but it tries to warp to the coordinates. Is there a way to make it try to warp to the name of the marker instead?
Right now it tries to do "/warp -4019 21 -4362" ingame, were it needs to do "/warp NAMEOFWARP" instead.
On the same note, the way the mod seems to store the names of markers doesn't support spaces. It inserts a "_" anytime a space is used in the naming of the marker, is there a way to allow it to support having a space in the name of the marker? Some of the warps on the server have spaces in their name and the "_" would mess it up. Alternatively you could also set it to convert the "_" back to space when it displays it ingame while keeping the "_" in the cfg file.
Wow didn't know servers could do that. I don't think I will be able to support areas of the map having different texture packs with the way MapWriter is currently designed, at least not without a huge amount of work that is better spent elsewhere.
I might not have been clear enough in my explanation of the resource pack thing. The server isn't automatically changing resource packs but has area's specified to use a specific pack. On the server I frequent multiple resource packs are used as the server is so large the textures needed can't be included in one single pack. What I was thinking was if there was a way to specify a specific section of the generated MapWriter map as using a specific resource pack (regardless of what pack I am using in game) it would prevent the map from overwriting that particular section when a specific pack is in use.
Think of it like World Guard. One section of the map is "protected" from being over written when a specific resource pack is in use. If you switch your ingame resource pack to the one specified for that part of the MapWriter map then it allows it to be overwritten (or new data generated). What I find happening is that when I go back to a place that is on the border of one resource pack and another, as I am walking/flying in game the map is updating and overwriting the are with new data using whatever resource pack I am using. So I now have potions of the mapwriter map that are showing the wrong textures.
You can reduce the writing area down as small as you can to try to limit this and switching packs and using R to redraw it but it would be awesome if you could specify an area by drawing it on the full screen map GUI and basically "lock" it to using one resource pack. So as you enter that area MapWriter will update the map up to but not past the area specified. Then, if you want to update the protected area you switch resource packs and now it will update everyting inside the specified area but now outside it.
It make sense in my head but not sure if I have explained it properly.
Yeah realms are a pain. There is no way for a mod to know which realm the player is currently in, so not much I can do to support them in MapWriter
As for the realms. Is there a way to "turn off" MapWriter when going to another realm so that it doesn't create map sections for that realm? Basically, force MapWriter to only work on a specified realm?
This may just go into the mix for my 1.6.4 update, as it covers needs currently dealt with by two separate mods, and one is rather clunky in doing what I want. Looks VERY promising!
You can't zoom the underground view unfortunately. I'm working on a replacement, or rather am thinking about a replacement, but it's still a long way off.
Some people, server admins and many players, prefer the underground view the way it is. Most server admins And consider versions that show more aria underground to be to cheaty. I would strongly suggest you not change it. And if you must change it make it require server side approval and include config options to limit it.
Add a feature to make the text below the map showing the coords smaller? I find that it wastes precious screen space (1280x800 sucks!), but I definitely want coordinates. That is the only thing that is holding me back from ditching zanminimap.
Also, is there a waypoint system, and/or a hotkey to make a waypoint quickly?
@mapwriter haha yeh, when I was talking about "work on modded servers" I meant as being a server mod but you already stated on GitHub that you wanted to keep this clientside only.
Thank you so much for this wonderful mod. We've been using it since 1.5.2 and I love how you're able to switch off features like the little minimap. Now again we're forced to actually LOOK at and learn our environment. I've changed the 'large' map to a tiny almost vanilla sized map which you can 'hold' in your 'hands'. I'm one of those people that hate having all the things like waypoint arrows, mobs and what not being displayed on most maps. I understand that these features might eventually be added for others that do like it.
We have one, maybe two little requests
1) The ability to set chunk radius around the player to be rendered to map making you work getting all those nooks and crannies mapped.
2) Ability to switch off any new features keeping MapWriter the way we love it.
I'm having trouble figuring out the config file. How exactly would I get Natura's cloud blocks from showing up on the map and have the ground beneath them visible instead?

Hello just wanted to inform you that the blockcolour part of the cfg is not working correctly. I set the correct hex value and AARRGGBB value for natura clouds and they don't turn transparent nor change color when I was messing around with the values.
Here is how that part of my config looks:
blockcolour {
S:025=60ffff00
S:026=60ff0000
S:cb5=ff0000ff
(00000000) # Have used these as subsitutes
(000000) # for the value set above for cb5
}
cb5 is the hex version of the ID I have natura clouds set to.
The first one should set it to be a blue color (I just used the example in comments to test)
Second and third should set it to transparent.
Unfortunately neither of them work, but hopefully you can fix it.
Great work on the mod and the API

Glad you like the mod!
I think ProfMobius is working on a chunk grid overlay, so you might be in luck.
I haven't used the mod with Magic Launcher but I assume you install it the same way as other Forge mods?
Here is a tutorial on using Forge with Magic Launcher if that helps:
