Okay, so I've been away from Minecraft for a while now, and likewise modding it, so I'm a little rusty on how things work. I've already gotten forge for 1.7.2 going and have TMI, BC, and IC2 running as well. However, trying to run with the EE3 download causes a crash. Am I right in thinking that I have to wait for a 1.7.2 version of EE3 and that mods for earlier versions will be incompatible with later versions?

Correct. (Most) Mods compiled for Minecraft 1.6.x will only work on Minecraft 1.6.x and like wise (most) mods compiled for Minecraft 1.7.x will only work on Minecraft 1.7.x. However, you can get EE3 for 1.7.x from Pahimar's website http://ee3.pahimar.com/

There's also other alchemical fuel recipes, but those are only converting recipes (eg alchemical fuel<-->alchemical fuel block). What does this mean? EE3 is still not functional, since Aludel/Calcinator rely on Alchemical Fuel (I think).

I'd say around a few weeks ago, since the version number is 0.1.142.
A lot of other stuff hasn't been updated though, like installation instructions, the changelog, etc.
EE3 still has a long way to go before becoming functional (a few "basic" recipes were just added back a few days ago, but you can't actually access anything usable), so be a bit patient :P.
Also, liking how the forums beta turned out, but where's the "Go to last unread post" button?
i hate how the mod author won't release the EE2 source code so it can be updated to a more recent version... i get that EE2 is REALLY OP and game breaking, but minecraft is a SANDBOX GAME! we should be able to choose how we want to play it! if we want to infinitely create diamonds or have unbreakable tools, that's our choice! EE3 is, in my opinion, a horrible "update" to a once great mod... i get that it's still a WIP and could be possibly better than EE2 once finished, but as of right now, it sucks.. at least add back dark matter armor/tools..

Since Equivalent Exchange 3 is an open source mod released under the LGPL v3, that means you have the right to include this mod in your modpack (regardless of who you are).

From a technical standpoint yes (though I'm not sure if BON will even work on 1.2.5 mods), but you have to realize, there have been a countless amount in changes between Minecraft 1.2.5 and now (networking code, textures, the use of a local server to run single player, etc). I'm not sure if you can do it legally, though it'd probably best to assume no.

I'd say around a few weeks ago, since the version number is 0.1.142.
A lot of other stuff hasn't been updated though, like installation instructions, the changelog, etc.
EE3 still has a long way to go before becoming functional (a few "basic" recipes were just added back a few days ago, but you can't actually access anything usable), so be a bit patient :P.
Also, liking how the forums beta turned out, but where's the "Go to last unread post" button?
I understand your point of view, but please...at least wait until the mod is finished until you complain (I do see that you mentioned it *is* WIP, which is nice-most people don't bother to notice that). It is entirely up to the mod author whether or not they want to release the source code. x3n0ph0b3, the creator of EE2, doesn't want it open-source. Done. If you really, really, really like EE2, it is always possible to go back to 1.2.5...

would it be alright to use a program that decompiles mods, like BON, and get the source code for EE2 then update it to use for personal use?
From a technical standpoint yes (though I'm not sure if BON will even work on 1.2.5 mods), but you have to realize, there have been a countless amount in changes between Minecraft 1.2.5 and now (networking code, textures, the use of a local server to run single player, etc). I'm not sure if you can do it legally, though it'd probably best to assume no.
