Soul-Binding gem is actually lame. It doesn't worth it's price. It should be a lot more expensive and permanent, also would be nice if it works like an enchantment (as example an "Enchanted sword with Soul-binding").
its the holidays i wouldn't be expecting much from any mod author right now.. it would be nice if you stopped telling people to leave and find another mod.. unless you have solid proof its dead stop with that.. not bashing you just pointing out that its pretty much a slap to the face of the mod author.
As for everyone getting crashes it may be other mods messing with soul shards im using the latest version 2.0.14 and havent had any problems.

"broken" you say. Prove it, the mod is 100% functional for it's intended purpose right now.
Just because it isn't OP city like SS#1 and doesn't behave how you want it doesn't mean it's "broken"

I already proved the mod is broken, causing both SSP amd SMP crashes... Good mod? Definately, but it is broken ATM... I'm sure someday it will be fixed.
Do the following:
1. place soul cage
2. tap cage with a shard (setting it's type)
3. save & exit your game
4. reload game
5. mine up soul cage
It's a known bug that will cause a crash... has something to do with the cage getting unloaded/reloaded and THEN being mined. If you mine the cage right after you place and set it up with the shard you are fine. If you destroy the placed cage in creative mode you are fine, the bug has something to do with the block that drops when it gets mined.
I had to remove soul shards from my private server because of this bug

I agree, read through the thread. There is a client/server crashing bug that is well documented.
As for it being dead... the mod was already passed on to another maintainer for a while, who also has a dead mod, before being taken back for a bugged release. ...and the author has not even logged in for over a month, so It would seem to be heading that way.
I think that the new SS2 mod takes away from what the mod is supposed to be. It does this by forcing one to destroy 4+ mob spawners to make, what is basically, a vanilla spawner. This is not what my idea of Soul Shards is; my idea of Soul Shards is to have a mod that you can work hard at to accomplish something. Sure we used it to get infinite blaze rods, but boilers are demanding on fuel. Sure we used it to get infinite XP, but ultimately on a server the moderator could control that if they wanted to. Sure we used it for other item drops, but seriously, what is wrong with that. As long as it’s on a private world/server why can we not have what we want in a sandbox game? After reading, watching videos and spotlights, and scouring forums about SS2 I am severely disappointed. What really got me is the forced update, I did not want to update. Gaming is my escape from all the things I HAVE to do and doing the things I WANT to do. I humbly ask that SS1 be made available to those who want it, or to have SS2 SEVERLY changed so that we, at the least, do not have to be in the same chunk as the spawner. This limits the ability to craft and do other things while it runs. I have a few suggestions. Change the mechanics so that mobs spawn when the player is not around; or have to use a chunk loader; or increase spawn rate based on IC2, BC, or Redstone power being supplied (more power = more spawns). I agree with most of the community on this, SS2 needs a lot of work and ironing out before it can be released for use on servers.
How you can say that this mod isn't basically dead is beyond me. It has a crashing bug, and hasn't been updated for it. The author hasn't been logged in for over a month either. Oh, and since you can't do much without it crashing, I wouldn't say it's "working as intended".
Of course no one ever places a block in the wrong place and needs to move it.... Or improves a build and needs to move it... Or decides to change the type of crystal... Yep, and all it takes is one or two quick wracks on a souls cage and a server goes down...

Yes! I totally agree. The whole Purpose of getting SS1 was to work your butt off to be able to get an OP spawner. It is impossible now to set up a mob drop/XP farm now that the spawners are, as you put it, basically vanilla spawners. I have been watching some of Direwolf20's older server play series and wish we had back what they have on there. I've tried setting up a Mob/XP farm with MFR and it just isn't the same. It feels like the Minecraft modding community, in some parts, is falling apart. Very Sad.

That's your vision. Not the mods. Soul Shards had many flaws and its nice to see the other try to balance them. On a different note, I agree with your opinion of the community failing apart. All I ever hear or see is devs copying others features, or insulting their code.
Then stop ing and get to work. Nothing's stopping you from re-making SS1. The non-stop parade of self-important whiners are getting annoying as *bleep*.
Number 1, first and foremost, I do not know how to code Java. Number 2, whining is when someone keeps complaining about something over and over. All I did was voice my God given right to an opinion. Nothing stopping you from building a very similar mod from the ground up. Kinda like what Project:Red did to RedPower. Heck, even DartCraft has craftable spawners...
If you think you can do better then do it. If you don't want to use the mod then don't use it. Don't waste your time and ours by whining here, most of us like the mod and are waiting patiently for updates.

i said this before that it wasnt hard with getting 1024 kills really but understand i could see mfr replacing it so much. If it not running on auto it not useful there no mod in the pack that has player detection to stand there 24/7 but really with all the draw backs to this all would just say gravity gun portal gun the spawner though a portal i even know that dartcraft can do the same thing with vanilla spawners this is kinda why i said it was broken i even put my input to make it better.
To me it so under power with range because that mean you have to be about 16 blocks of that spawner that kinda range seem poorly either bumping range but it still wont matter because if you think about it it spawn 1 to 5 which does has a cooldown between spawning and also invisible bubble till all mobs of that type is out of range .With it being still using vanilla way is poor design so your standing there for about 15 -20 min collecting mobs .I know that because it take about that long for blaze spawner exp. to hit around 30 levels, It still need upgrade to it killing 1024 was kinda a goal point really even with the enhance making it going a bit fast did help so there was nothing wrong with that putting in the work to kill the mob was kinda saying be prepare to achieve this goal. Otherwises it kinda boring standing in a single spot. If we had upgrades to it be like before killing the mob to tier it up but only way to do so was to apply to the block like you had to kill this many to put this first tier upgrade to make go a bit faster but doing so for each tier you lose that tier shard when you apply it to existing shard with in that block. It kinda like how exp. get harder to get depending on level it is. Ik someone going to say if i break it will i lose the shards i put in there and only have one shard i would say no to that .Depend on the level of the tier of shards you put in will come out but have been kinda slight decrease in there kill count it kinda like a plenty for breaking. But with a max one it become a crystal or jewel then a shard of that mob.
