Just the thing. Some of our super large builds and especially the underwater ones are ANNOYING to fix the water issues on. You have my gratitude! Will download when there is a 1.4.2 update. No hurries You are added to my hero list.
Because we respect that, while expressing how much we look forward to seeing the port for such-and-such version is ok, as is asking if it will be updated, actually asking for it is a violation of the forum rules.
In other words:
Don't say "Where's the update" -- you are not entitled to one.
Don't say "When does the 1.4.6 update come out" -- it might not.
Say "I loved this in 1.3.2"
Say "I'm looking forward to this."
Say "Are you planning on updating, or is it now finished?"
And, as this is a one-line fix, it would be an easy mod to get started with.
(if I had a decompiler that worked, if I had MCP set up to decompile properly, if the resultant output would compile properly (otherwise, I'm assuming I did something wrong in the earlier steps), if I could figure out how to use eclipse, ... oh, look: forge 445 now actually does that automatically! Too bad 443 was the last one that worked.)
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?

MCP is updated to 1.4.6
Forge is just a pain to decompile/recompile.
I personally hate Forge. It makes Minecraft look messy.
Also note, this isn't a bug.
Notch made it this way so you could have flexible water systems. With this fix, you wouldn't be able to make a bowl made of water.
A better solution is:
Check:
That there's a solid block beneath the empty spot
If not, check that all 4 sides of the empty spot have full sources.
If not, check that 2 opposing sides of the empty spot have full sources, as well as the block below is water.
This would fix ugly ocean currents that get ruined, by picking up a distant water source. It would also allow you to make complex water systems without breaking them.

Sorry, but I don't understand. What did you mod and test if your method works?
Also, to elaborate on why your above mentioned method is a superficial fix (was tired before so didn't want to get into a longwinded post);
-If you grabbed a block of water from the middle of the ocean, there is absolutely no way to fill it without placing a solid block underneath it, and by doing that destroying another block of water. To fix that one, you would need to put another solid block underneath, destroy the top one and so on and so on until you reached the bottom, and as you know, oceans are deep. Drown-multiple-times-before-you-finish-it deep.
-Filling empty water blocks with a water bucket while underwater is pretty much impossible due to the game not recognizing water blocks as a single block, preventing you from aiming where to pour out the bucket.
-Try, with your method, to create a square well (3x3 squares wide, 11 squares deep, meaning it has to have 99 water source blocks). With your method, the centre square would require you to build solid blocks up to the top of the well and then break and replace them with water blocks one by one down to the bottom. For the sides, you would need 84 buckets of water since they don't propagate without a solid block underneath (like you noted) and you would have to fill them in block by block.
With this mod, it would take 33 buckets, and you'd be done in a couple of minutes (just fill in 3 corners from the bottom to the top, and they would propagate to fill in the well with the remaining source blocks).
I don't know about you, but just knowing that there's a source block missing somewhere under the surface drives me crazy, and has caused me to empty out entire rivers/bays, and in an extreme case even delete a server with months of playtime.
P.S:
If you can mod, could you possibly send me the decompiled files for the 1.4.6 client and server? I tried doing it myself but I couldn't (something to do with my Java installation).
Ok, what is wrong with the idea?
A block from the middle of the ocean:
If not, check that all 4 sides of the empty spot have full sources.
If not, check that 2 opposing sides of the empty spot have full sources, as well as the block below is water.
Both tests are satisfied.
A well, 3x3, 11 deep:
Your solution: Fill three corners each floor.
This system: Fill 4 corners each floor, and the bottom
> If not, check that 2 opposing sides of the empty spot have full sources, as well as the block below is water.
If the 4 corners are filled, then the edges fill in.
If the edges fill in, the center fills in.

It does work. I modded it, and tested it

So it seems to me that this does work.
What exactly would this fail on?

Mods generally only work on the specific version of minecraft that they are made for, and no others.
