The villager trade mod makes villagers more useful by allowing them to trade.
certain ores can be converted into currency:
one gold ingot makes 8 gold coins
one iron ingot makes 8 iron coins
one diamond makes 8 diamond coins
you can also craft 1 diamond coin to 8 gold, and one gold to 2 iron.
when a villager is clicked, a GUI window will appear showing what they trade and how much their items cost.whenever you put enough coins into the villager GUI window and press space, a trade will occur.

I installed it via modloader, got the coins, but cannot get the gui to pop up with the villagers. Installed it into my minecraft.jar and got the gui working, but couldn't use it at all. Tried shift+clicking a stack of the coins, and it crashed minecraft.
I like the idea of this mod, and think it would be really useful and cool, especially if you update it for 1.2, when the villagers get their cool new upgrades officially. It would make villages such a cool place to be.
EDIT:
cool. does each villager have its own inventory? do for example blacksmiths and cooks have related items to what they do?
When I checked them out, they did all have their own job based inventories. Farmer, Butcher, Librarian, and Priest.

I like this idea, it opens up a completely new dynamic to the game.
The idea of allowing players to build entire infrastructures and hierarchies is outstanding.
This idea could turn into a fully fleshed out economic system where players can build entire towns or cities that have orders. Those in higher positions can give out quest orders to the lower ranking citizens, this creates determination to build up a community. Once players accomplish their quest, they are awarded with either resources or currency, that currency can be used to purchase items in shops which are governed by players. They set the prices, but they require resources, so they rely on gatherers to bring forth resources of which they are paid as well.
If a player is insecure of their money, they can store it in a bank which can be accessed by them at any time, their personal chest is safe from anyone.
To have this all work out, an XP system is needed that allows players to progress in whatever they're doing. This can be applied to all sorts of roles ranging from blacksmithing, farming, mining, fighting, trading, business, lock picking, alchemy, magic, etc.

needs modloader, and must be put into the jar
Bug fixed. the game no longer crashes.
Cool. Is the download link updated?
yep
Also if you could set up the mod to run like most other modloader mods, and not need to be installed into the jar, that'd be helpful.
ok ill be doing that soon too.
