Open your Nvidia or AMD Control Panel and set the "Preferred Graphics Processor" to Nvidia or AMD, Not Auto or Intel. Do this "Globally", not just for Minecraft.exe.

The descriptions and instructions for this mod, that you were supposed to read "Before" installing them, very clearly say:
"You need a modern and very powerful Graphics Card to run a shader."
"Intel HD Graphics are "Not" compatible with SEUS."
If you are "Not" using Intel HD and "Do" have a proper dedicated Nvidia or AMD graphics card but you still get the black screen or crashing, then please skip the next paragraph.
Intel HD: Intel HD Graphics are not designed for modern high-end games because they are "Not" a Graphics Card, they are an "iGPU". This means it's a small part of your Processor/CPU that just "Acts" like, or "Pretends" to be a Graphics Card.
Intel HD is very weak and has many issues due to it's buggy drivers and Intel's refusal to conform with industry standards. It's designed to give you enough graphical power to watch a movie, YouTube video or play a basic game, not for running extremely complex and demanding graphical applications, like shaders. Some shaders like SEUS are as demanding on graphical power as Battlefield 4 on Ultra settings!
For people "Not" using Intel HD one of the following is the cause of the issue:
1# - Your PC's graphics card is not powerful enough or is too old. The mods description clearly says you need a "Modern and very powerful graphics card!"
2# - Your graphics card driver is out of date. Update it to the latest version from your manufactures website.
3# - The wrong or an out dated version of the GLSL Shader Core mod is installed.
4# - You have mod installed or a setting that is causing an incompatibility.
Feel free to post on the SEUS thread if you want more info about whether your graphics card (Nvidia or AMD/ATI) is compatible.
There are some very basic and low-end Shaders available on Minecraft.net forum that might work with old or low powered cards and Intel HD.
If you had read the mods description you would have seen that it clearly says: "The author of SEUS Shader-pack has no access to a Mac, so is unable to provide Mac support at this time."
What setting could possibly cause the black screen?
FIrst of all. INtegrated Graphics are a no-no. Do not even think of them as graphic cards. They ain't. There is a reason expensive and powerful Graphic cards are the size of a small laptop.
EDIT ignore that was replying to someone else on that one. What is your graphics card? Also giving minecraft more ram only helps with content it loads. It helps with shaders none what so-ever. Shaders are all done GPU side, you don't even need a lot of GPU memory. Just a high clock speed.
Second, this is a shader mod. It runs ontop of minecraft. It will always always be slower. Since it is doing things that minecraft wasn't designed to do. If it was implemented the engine that would be a different thing but it is not. It is sort of like... a wrapper? I'm not sure of a better analogy.
I have a GTX 680 and with a view distance of 15 I get 3o to 45 fps. I accept it as a trade of for the much much much prettier graphics. Try turning your render distance down one by one and see if you can strike a balance. Scenes with a lot of Trees eat up your FPS since they all have to wave as well. They will wave as far as they are rendered. Knocking down your shadow distance will help as well.
Sorry for late reply. I have an XFX R9 280x. I have tried turning render distance down to as low as 4 and barely break 30 FPS. I gave MC more Ram as suggested, made sure my drivers were updated, etc. Maybe I'll just wait for SEUS 1.8.

What graphic card do you use?
If NVIDIA (and I suppose you have an nvidia card and maybe a laptop) go to your control panel (right click on your desktop) and make sure you have selected under Manage 3D Settings "preferred graphics processor" : High-performance NVIDIA processor.
Dony forget to ask about RAM crashing is usually caused by not allocating enough RAM

Dude, you had to read this when you installed the mod, you have no excuse.
This mod requires recent and fast graphic card with NVIDIA or AMD GPU.
Intel HD Graphics is not supported. (It sometimes works but too slow.)
Because of more graphics computation, it will decrease frame rate.
And for the people that reads the "It sometimes works" as it will work. That was on a Workstation Motherboard with an X-class CPU.
It makes it hard for me to judge my torch placement in caves because I can't tell the darkness level with the light coming off the torch in my hand.
I'm using SEUS v10.1 Ultra on 1.7.10
TL;DR: How can I disable the light from handheld torches.
1. That is not a full log, if we didn't know what it was, there would be no help.
2. Did you really read it all? I suspect an Intel GPU, which is usually the culprit of this problem. Read below for details.
Open your Nvidia or AMD Control Panel and set the "Preferred Graphics Processor" to Nvidia or AMD, Not Auto or Intel. Do this "Globally", not just for Minecraft.exe.
If you do not have either an Nvidia or AMD Control Panel then please read the guide below for: PC USERS.
The descriptions and instructions for this mod, that you were supposed to read "Before" installing them, very clearly say:
"You need a modern and very powerful Graphics Card to run a shader."
"Intel HD Graphics are "Not" compatible with SEUS."
If you are "Not" using Intel HD and "Do" have a proper dedicated Nvidia or AMD graphics card but you still get the black screen or crashing, then please skip the next paragraph.
Intel HD: Intel HD Graphics are not designed for modern high-end games because they are "Not" a Graphics Card, they are an "iGPU". This means it's a small part of your Processor/CPU that just "Acts" like, or "Pretends" to be a Graphics Card.
Intel HD is very weak and has many issues due to it's buggy drivers and Intel's refusal to conform with industry standards. It's designed to give you enough graphical power to watch a movie, YouTube video or play a basic game, not for running extremely complex and demanding graphical applications, like shaders. Some shaders like SEUS are as demanding on graphical power as Battlefield 4 on Ultra settings!
For people "Not" using Intel HD one of the following is the cause of the issue:
1# - Your PC's graphics card is not powerful enough or is too old. The mods description clearly says you need a "Modern and very powerful graphics card!"
2# - Your graphics card driver is out of date. Update it to the latest version from your manufactures website.
3# - The wrong or an out dated version of the GLSL Shader Core mod is installed.
4# - You have mod installed or a setting that is causing an incompatibility.
Feel free to post on the SEUS thread if you want more info about whether your graphics card (Nvidia or AMD/ATI) is compatible.
There are some very basic and low-end Shaders available on Minecraft.net forum that might work with old or low powered cards and Intel HD.
If you had read the mods description you would have seen that it clearly says: "The author of SEUS Shader-pack has no access to a Mac, so is unable to provide Mac support at this time."
Scroll your mouse wheel up or down to something else other than torches in your hand.
Do you have a dedicated graphics card like Radeon or Geforce cards?

Sorry for late reply. I have an XFX R9 280x. I have tried turning render distance down to as low as 4 and barely break 30 FPS. I gave MC more Ram as suggested, made sure my drivers were updated, etc. Maybe I'll just wait for SEUS 1.8.

Step Four: Stop being cheap, buy real GPU.
