I do like the longbow idea earlier too. Maybe it ignores some armors? It was the first weapon that got through the thick armor earlier. Since England only used longbows in a fight against the french and won easily.
Come to think about it, it may also suffer the same problem with the 2 hand sword (i.e. the icon)

I recently downloaded 12w22a snapshot of minecraft and it seems Modloader is incompatible with it. The only mod I'm interested in installing is yours (Battlegear), So there is no worry of conflicts (or so I think). Please tell me if there is a way to work around the Modloader dependency.
And yes I know I can simply downgrade to 1.2.5 and keep using battlegear. but the snapshot has so many features that I simply can't resist.

Basically you have the choice of snapshots or mods.

Its a known issue with my renderer. I will upload a fix when i get a chance. I believe it is only present in the renderer not usng playerRenderAPI. I suggest downloading and using that.
Also just to let you know, the next major feature yupdate will also see an end to the optional Fogre thinggy. It is getting too hard and the code is getting too messy trying to account for this major variable. After that point Forge will be required to play the mod

Sounds like you're using the "latest" Forge. Try using the "recommended."

The shield looks similar enough to the wood shield. A horned helmet should be doable, possibly an alternate knight helmet using a bone instead of cloth.
Alright, just want to say, I love the mod, and the work you've done is amazing! But unfortunately, I've had problems. Whenever I use Forge and Battlegear, as soon as I take damage, the game goes to saving chunks, and crashes. Just in the case that it does have something to do with the mod, or just Forge in general, I do have an error report. I'm no expert at reading them, and I can't be sure what's causing it, but if you have an idea, I would appreciate hearing it. Thanks.

I think the newest version of Optifine is causing the instant kill issue and my Optifine settings being ignored.
Need to get home and see if the an older version fixes it.

My Optifine settings were ignored when I installed this.
Also, I'm having a problem where I get instant-kill by any mob, and by touching lava and cactus.
