The NPC's i've seen are highly customizable. You can give them certain weapons and armor, name them, tell them if they should stand still, patrol an area or a set pattern, how much HP/attack power they have, if they should use ranged attacks, use custom models for how they should look, etc, etc, etc.
Basically you get this special wand and can create them anywhere.
For example, i'm building a medieval seaside town in singleplayer and I wanted to keep mobs under control in and around it. I've built some archery towers and placed some guards in there who can shoot at mobs around the town (with a max range of 64).
I've also placed guard stations around the town and have guards posted in them who attack mobs that come within a custom range.
You spawn the NPC yourself.
I think I saw a feature that lets your NPC's appear or disappear under certain conditions. Like a guard appearing when a mob was around and disappearing when the mob was defeated. I also saw some options that can make the NPC hide during night, day, retreat when an enemy was near, etc.
Not sure if that answered your question about the dynamics.
I was hoping for an option for you to create NPC templates and have them spawn naturally as normal minecraft mobs do.
It's kind of useless for me to manually spawn my own opposition, but I can see the value for quest makers, etc.

You are far with getting them to fight each other. You now just need to go into global -> factions and set which factions they are actually agressive against.
Hey Noppes thanks! Yeah sorry, I didn't realize selecting the hostile factions was clicking them to get the white box. I thought that because they were already in the box, they were hostile. So that is my bad. I figured it out now and they are working as planned.
On I side note, I have a suggestion, I think it would be very useful to be able to have multiple quest objectives. So to be able to have to say, kill a NPC (kill quest type) and collect some treasure from their layer (item quest type).
If you did this, it would also be cool to make each objective have the standard availability options, so as to make them be required to be done in order, or only be able to continue if you go back and talk to someone.
Then you could say also add the option to make an objective hidden, that way you could do player choice quests where say the quest log tells you to go and kill this person or whatever, but if you instead talk to then and make a deal (dialogue quest type) you could also finish that way, but it wouldn't shove that option in the players face by putting it in the quest log.
So sorry I have made such a large suggestion, I just think that if implemented, these options could really add the option to add a lot more story into the quests, plus have multi-tasked quests without getting the "Quest Complete" stuff every time you complete a part of the story.

1: Define "pre-created" NPCs, do you mean in the NPC cloner?
2:Only if your very skilled at pulling data files apart, then you'd still need to know how the NPCs work. So, not in a very convenient way currently, if at all.

Essentially, I would like to use this mod as a means to fill a void of there being no mob mods that use guns at all.
I don't really want to "create" a particular scenario, I simply want to create archetypes and then allow them to spawn dynamically in the world.
Doing this within the game seems to be fairly cumbersome, and honestly these tutorials, even the one that shows you how to make NPCs with guns does not explicitly cover this.
You can put down AI and watch them fight, great.
I want to basically play survival, with flans mod and have these pre-defined archetypes spawn in-world and be able to fight/evade them.
Pretty simple in concept, not so simple in execution it seems with this mod.
I just don't know why the mod itself couldn't have been made to read from config files that were easily editable so all you had to do was define your types and then jump in to the game and they appear.
This mod has a lot of potential, but until you can edit more things by menu, including cloning types you're creating without tools, and editing the root clone type in a menu - it's usefulness is pretty limited.

The new AI for other NPCs will mean that we can probably add more abilities to them, assuming that their tasking orders are tailor made for them. There's also some new features for the villagers that hold promise for new jobs such as farmers, lumberjacks, and fisherman.

Hi, dear Noppes. I am from Russia and I create russian minecraft RPG-server with NPC-custom.
Sorry for my bed English and it's hard for me to read all commentaries in thread. Only what I so want is import models to mod. We created some models based on human model. So, how to do this? Also, I don't use custom for 1.7.2 minecraft, just 1.6.4., cos we have not to yet upgraded to the new version, but will soon. As I know in new version there's new model system for npcs, and it's possible to add new models (for expamle there's human-cat, but we created human-elephant) to mod?

In 1.7 I added natural spawning. Its in the global -> natural spawn menu. You can use it to spawn mobs/npcs naturally

The new AI for other NPCs will mean that we can probably add more abilities to them, assuming that their tasking orders are tailor made for them. There's also some new features for the villagers that hold promise for new jobs such as farmers, lumberjacks, and fisherman.
