Keep forgetting to look into the font size thing, but I did find this mod. They've done the hit number thing way better than I have, so I recommend you guys check it out. The only downside is that it requires Forge.
If you want to use his numbers, then use the second download link (No add-on) to get just the main mod (chat messages) without the hit numbers.
SUMMARY
This mod will spam your chat when your current tool is about to break, so that you can repair it and save materials. This mod does not require modloader, and it works in SSP as well as SMP.
CONFIG
The configuration file (durabilitywarning.txt) is fairly simple, here's the default file:
# show warnings for which tool types
wood: false
stone: true
iron: true
gold: true
diamond: true
# show the 3-line warning?
multiline: true
# line colours
# See http://www.sunlis.ca/dw_colours.html for more information on line colours
welcome: 15
loaded: 15
update: 15
top: 15
main: 15
bottom: 15
# when to show warnings
warnings: 10 - 0, 50%, 100% - 99%
# receive a notification when mod is updated?
updatenotify: true
Tool types are pretty self-explanatory.
A false multiline will give you a 1-line warning instead of a 3-line warning.
Warnings! =D You can specify warning points (5, 75%) and warning ranges (10-5, 50%-40%). These must be separated by a comma. Spaces don't matter, they're ignored anyway.
EXTENSIONS
Note: Since 2.2.5, add-on(s) will be packaged with the main mod.
OTHER
NOTE: This mod does not, in any way, modify the durability of your tools. It is simply a warning system for those of us on auto-pilot when digging/mining/etc.
When i try to edit the durabilitywarning (config file) thats in the .minecraft folder the line
# line colours. does not show up bug maybe?
Any line that starts with a # is a comment, which is ignored by my parser. Those are just there for your benefit.
Do the other lines ("welcome", "loaded", etc.) show up?
It's not a huge deal, since they all default to white even if you don't have those lines in the config file.

I should really document that file better....
No they do not show (welcome loaded and the other ones) it just shows's everything but not that
Just wanted to thank you for the effort that went into authoring the mod. It works very well.
As a request for a future features, perhaps you could add some method of identifying the current number of available uses? Perhaps an optional numeric display on the tool icon, or perhaps a key-press that announces the remaining uses on the currently wielded item.

My main goal with this mod was to make it very compatible and low-impact. I believe I've done so by only modifying a single MC class, and only modifying two methods in that class. However, I've been considering adding additional functionality to it, such as a GUI or other things to make it easier to use in general. Your "hit indicator", as I will call it, would fit under that category as well.
I would like to try to add these as optional "expansions" - a class or two that you can substitute or (ideally) a toggle in the settings file to get that particular feature, while still modifying as few classes as possible (ideally, still just one). It's a task that I've wanted to try to tackle for a while now, and I'm hoping that I can find the time to do so soon - perhaps over the holiday break coming up in a few weeks.
All of that being said, I will surely see what I can do about implementing your feature requests. The button press option seems more compatible with my current system, but I would really like to see a hit indicator, as figuring that out would open a lot of doors for this and any other mods I decide to work on.
Was doing my periodic update check and realized that I failed to post a thank you note for this additional functionality.
It is working great.
Thanks again for your work!
If you set the updatenotify property in durabilitywarning.txt to true, then you'll get a message in MC when there's an update for the mod available. =)

Nice work making that can work for any situation!
Could you PM me any details?

I repair my tools all the time in 1.8.1

Adds a number showing hits remaining to your tools.
v0.1 - still a little ugly, I'm working on making it look nicer

I'll be updating as soon as I can, once MCP updates.
Thank you for your support! =)
Looks like it's updated. Good news for all
