As for eliminating perma-death, here's what I'm thinking:
Instead of dying, dogs will become see-through "ghosts" that can neither take nor deal damage. You can revive them by feeding them a special item. This should be easy enough to do, actually.
This may just be me, but I'm finding that the increased speed my mod provides for wolfies actually somehow screws up their pathfinding a little bit. Anyone else noticing this on my mod? If I have to, I can just put their speed back to normal.
Okay, if any modders are reading this who understand individual mob data storage, like the kind used for sitting, tamed, and angry states on wolves, PLEASE PM ME. This is getting to be a modding nightmare.

Yeah, it would be cool, but considering that wolves also lag behind you, wander around when not sitting, etc, it wouldn't be that practical from what I understand.

Yea, that is true. And it would probably cause more lag.
Very nice mod. I will be downloading as soon as more skills are added. It has also inspired me to start cracking on learning programming. (Currently learning Python. Plan to go to Java or C++ after that.)
you should consider having someone else work on the mod with you, might get things done quicker and get more ideas from each other. Just a suggestion.

Also, if anybody would like to make icons for each of the skills that would look nice floating over dogs' future nametags, lemme know, I'm going to need something like that later, when I add the capacity for multiple skills!
You think you could improve the AI of the wolves a bit? Like, make them avoid thinks like lava, cacti, and high falls? Or, hell. Even make them immune to cacti/fall/lava damage with a skill. Honestly, that's what annoys me the most about wolves. It's not so much the combat uselessness as it is the fact that I'm always afraid their going to kill themselves through sheer idiocy.
Some suggestions off the top of my head:
Feathers = Reduce/Negate fall damage
Lava Buckets = Lava/Fire immunity
Water Buckets = Faster swimming speed? Extended oxygen?
Iron Ingots = Higher defense
Iron/Gold/Diamond Blocks = Ore Sniffer (Mining dogs! Similar to Creeper Sweeper.)
Cacti = Immune to cacti damage.
