Alright everyone, I have posted an exploratory introduction to Robinton, Nocte, and myself (Higher Worlds) for the Spout Team in their forum and made Robinton's offer of assistance known. I had to dust off my old "Intro to Cubic Chunks" skills. :wink.gif:
Perhaps you could stop by there and gently and constructively offer your support. :smile.gif:
Can Cubic Chunks be used to extend the height of an old world and when will it be updated?
Absolutely! You can either preconvert the old world using his World Save Converter or simply open your old world with a Cubic Chunks modded minecraft and it will automatically convert it as you go through it. Using the auto-method might cause a temporary fps drop until all of the world is converted.
I can't answer the second question except to say that Robinton has recently gone through a Harddrive change and is up and running again. :smile.gif:

Great, thanks. Can't wait until this is updated.

Life is a Learning Curve.... Unfortunately, you're stuck on the bottom...amongst the bones of the stupid.
Holy Crap!!! First off I want to say "THANK YOU ROBINTON FOR THE AWESOME MOD!!!!" This is exactly the kind of mod that we need for Minecraft as one of the few remaining issues with the vanilla game is the height restrictions. To this effect I have setup a server and installed cubic chunks on top of it.
This works GREAT for the spawn area +/- ~250-550 blocks on the x/z axes, however when you this that range sometimes you will come to an edge of the world that goes dark... When this happens there are very few chunks that will go beyond this edge. You can then follow this edge around the whole map and back to where you started walking around the world... There are no error files that are being listed by this. Something else that I noticed is that if the world edge is at +63 then at +34 to +64(this all being on one of the axes) you can only place blocks, not remove ANY. This happens to anybody even the OPS on the server.
Not sure if this is something other's have run into... but it would be nice to see if this can be sorted out while we wait for a 1.2 release.
-Server is 1.0.1 WITH META-INF still there.
-Patched using V1.5.4_T5_MC1.0.0_Server.zip - I have not had a chance to look for a 1.0.0 server, but I'm pretty sure that I saw that the server is compatable with 1.0.1
-I have tried this both with McMyAdmin and without it. Issue is present both ways.
-Tried server files on a different computer running 64bit instead of 32 bit, issue persists.
-Issue occurs with any per-defined world seed OR randomly generated seed
-Client config is 1.0.0
-Patched with modloader according to MineCrack's thread.
-Only contains 1.5.4 for client
-When running a SSP game this issue does not appear to be present.
-No other mods are installed on either the server or the client.
If you guys need/want more information let me know and I'm more than willing to answer if possible. I look forward to the day where CC is a standard mod or part of Vanilla for all Minecrafter's to enjoy!
Again GREAT mod Robinton!

Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity.
Spout guy here. We have been building the new spout server from the ground up to include a cubic chunks-like system. This stems from obviously hearing of this mod and also the idea is not exactly difficult to come up with of your own volition. The main reason we never asked for any cross-development was because we had to really write it from scratch anyway. The server is totally different from the regular minecraft source and so all the help we could get in the planning stages was "how does it work in concept?" which is quite simple. Cubic chunks.
The server is already running with cubic chunks (not Cubic Chunks tm) but as we have cross-posted in our forums, we're very much interested in your save format. That said it probably will not plug right into our code out of the box. There a few things we can do here:
A. The best option for us would be for you to write us a pull request on github. This signs your pull request under our license and allows you to implement your saving with our structure. This adds you to the contributor list (and thus the credits, even shows specifically which lines of code in git blame)
B. You give us the code and written permission to use some or all of it under our license (with credit, of course :smile.gif: this is implied)
C. You give us the specs and we figure everything out for ourselves. Not ideal but still potentially better than us developing a save format independently from you.
Any of the options, or none of them, are perfectly fine with us. You can contact us on our forums in the thread MineCrak has created or in PMs, or you can find us on #spout and #spoutdev on Espernet IRC. I believe we even have a web client on our website for easy access here: http://forums.spout.org/chat/
Not to put down MineCrak, but in any case we need expressly written permission from Robinton to use his code, and it would be nice to be able to work directly with you guys via IRC or forums to work out bugs, how it works, questions, etc.

Great Troubleshooting info, thanks! Yeah, the current mc1.0.0 Test versions of Cubic Chunks are not yet as functional as the CC versions for older versions of Minecraft are, so please don't judge Cubic Chunks total developement based on that, it's merely an updating issue (mc 1.0.0 was a huge change from earlier beta versions).

Thanks for reading! :biggrin.gif:
Thanks for all of that info! And also for the Spout Team's friendly responses here and in the Spout forum. :smile.gif:
My post in your Forum was meant as an initial contact, introduction and offer. It was understood that more contact and details would ensue before code would be transferred etc. :wink.gif: We just wanted to test the waters and find out both what was going on and whether or not you were interested.
Now, with all of the info you have posted here and the responses in my thread in your forum, we have a far clearer idea of what's going on and how Robinton will be able to interact with you and help going forward. Before this we knew almost nothing about what Spout was doing in regards to Cubic Chunks other than a few references and Cubic Chunks Mod users thinking Robinton was already involved.
Thank you so much for clearing this up for us. :smile.gif:
btw: Robinton is researching Spout now as well as is Nocte. They have a LOT of catching up to do in learning about what you guys are doing, so please have patience. :wink.gif:

MineCrak, I figured it was just a bug but wanted to see if anybody else had seen it yet. I do judge CC based on what has happend prior, however it is IMPOSSIBLE NOT to see the potential and the amazing job that both Robinton, yourself and all other contributors have done! If there is anything that I can do to help assist please let me know.

Man! I underestimated how stubborn Minecraft would be! I spent half an hour trying to get PrintWriters to work again... Anyway, I've been working on Bytecode editing. I had it apparently completely working in debug, but as soon as I tried to get it to work obfuscatedly, it completely blew up! After overwriting a few files that I shouldn't have had to, I got it to load, but lighting was... very weird, PrintWriters wouldn't work, so debug messages were almost impossible, and Minecraft promptly quit with no warning or error message about 25 seconds after loading a world. At that point, I decided to call it a skyfall, and try to not more than double my overconfident projections. :sad.gif:

Thanks for the enthusiasm and thorough testing! I think you're the first one to test the (excuse me for the download mis-name) MC 1.0.1 Cubic Chunks server! (Second, if you count what I've been able to get in on my computer.) I'm not sure what your problem is, but I have two different hunches (my added chunk-send reprioritization, or vanilla's near-spawn chunk perma-load), so I should be able to figure it out soon. Another thing to add to my TODO list. :biggrin.gif:

I'm playing around with the World Save Converter to see if I can get higher worlds in/out of SpoutCraft.
Is the "extended height" format that it supports(Mentioned in MineCrak's thread as "Cubic 65504 / Vanilla 128 / Extended (32-4096) / ymod ( 256-4096 )") supposed to be its own option in the dropdown menu? Because I only see CC, Vanilla, and ymod. Or do you select that by selecting Vanilla + a non-128 height?
Also, here are the results of my preliminary tests simply copying worlds around:
A Fishtaco (256) save loaded in SpoutCraft: loads, but world reduced to parallel vertical planes 128 blocks tall separated by a 1 block space.
A SpoutCraft (256) save loaded in a Fishtaco-modded Minecraft: crashes at "Saving Chunks"
A SpoutCraft (256) save loaded in vanilla Minecraft: loads, but world reduced to parallel vertical planes 128 blocks tall separated by a 1 block space.
Both Fishtaco and Spoutcraft 256 worlds render in Tectonicus like this:
The SaveConverter menus consider Notchian "worldHeight" World Height increases to be more or less "Vanilla". So, yes, that's under "Vanilla". The underlying save format is pretty much identical, after all.
I think you should make a mod that introduces terminal velocity into Minecraft. One of the problems with cubic chunks was the lack of terminal velocity, so just adding terminal velocity would fix that.
In my write-up on Jeb's new upcoming Default Higher Worlds for Minecraft I make note of Jeb referring to the "New World Format". It made me wonder if it's just the usual Minecraft world save extended to 256 height like fishtaco's or if he's made more extensive alterations to the World Save Format.
Well; a new tweet from Jeb confirms that there will be more newness than expected coming with his "New World Format". Also; Jeb is creating more Texture space for Minecraft. See Below:
Sorry for the lack of updates / activity over the past week: I've been working at switching Hard Drives on my computer, so that's been taking up most of my free time.
Fortunately, I've still had time to work on Bytecode editing. Though I haven't tested it, I actually think that 4096IDs for MC1.1 is a few config file updates away from working (aside from getting my computer working again - and having more than borrowed internet access)! The best thing is: it overwrites ~5 files! (Alas, one of those is ModLoader.class. Risugami, forgive me :wink.gif: ). Also, most mod incompatibilities can be fixed by adding the incompatible class file's name to the config file. :biggrin.gif:
@Machinia: :biggrin.gif:
@buggy1997123: Thanks for telling us.
@owller: Two mods you have installed are both trying to use BlockID 105. Actually, I think that more accurately, a mod you have installed is trying to use an ID that Minecraft is already using (I'm guessing that because pu.class is definitely an obfuscated Minecraft name). Try changing around mod_MineColony's config file so it doesn't use BlockID 105.
@Zodorac: "Do I need to actually have Y-Mod installed to convert my world to a Y-Mod world?" No. You can have a map in YMod format. Just don't load it with Minecraft. Only load it with MCEdit! You can load it with Cubic Chunks when you're done editing it. And look at MineCrak's official tutorial.
@DrakyDarkstar: Feel free to try, just give me credit for the original. If you manage it, nobody else will be asking me about "why no haz bukkit update". :wink.gif: It's a difficult task; I wish you well...
And sorry I haven't kept that list updated. The best thing would be to cross-reference CC with MCP's obfuscation spreadsheets.
@soraminoru: I'll try to update that sooner rather than later, then. If anyone wants the code for that, though, I'd be glad to give it to them.
@jve22: Hang in there, I'm working on it.
@DrakyDarkstar: Congrats on the breakthrough / near breakthrough. Again, good luck!
@MineCrak: Because I didn't know, either...
The Spout Christmas wish-list includes including some sort of cubic extended height, so since I read it a month ago I've assumed that they would try to re-implement Cubic Chunks, or would copy from my code (which would be ok with crediting).
It has been pretty clear that I haven't been active on this project for at least a month or two. The short of it is that I've lost interest in playing Minecraft, and because of that I haven't been motivated to tinker with MCEdit.
I've been treating MCEdit as a personal project so far. There's no official issue tracker, wiki, or discussion forums; I've been keeping it low key, running the entire project out of my inbox and this one forum thread. When I work on the code, I tend to work on whatever I think would be fun.
There's a point when it stops being fun. That point is when I feel obligated to solve people's issues or add new features on request, when those people (probably) haven't done me any favors and at a time when I really need to be looking for paid work rather than fooling around with an add-on for a video game.
For the first year of development (starting July 2010), I spent 30-40 hours a week on MCEdit. In addition to writing code for viewing and editing the level files, I also spent time experimenting with Minecraft and investigating issues that users took the time to describe. One memorable exchange is with a user who kept trying to fill an area with wood, but in game the wood was lined with grooves all running in one direction. After denying it a few times, it turned out that he was in fact filling the area with Wooden Stairs and not Wood. Another user reported a ton of lag after filling an area with dirt, but after downloading his save it turned out he was filling the area with Grass instead. I coded in an extra step that turns buried Grass into Dirt before saving the level.
I spent some time on a feature that probably wasn't important to many people: file formats. MCEdit can read, write, and export from very old versions of Minecraft. Classic Singleplayer (.mine) and Multiplayer (.dat) files are partially supported with filename assistance for nonstandard sizes. (Full support would use a helper application made in Java.) Indev files (.mclevel) are fully supported as are world folders from Minecraft Infdev, Alpha, Beta, Release and Pocket Edition. In addition, the export format (.schematic) includes a field that tells MCEdit which version it came from. MCEdit uses this field to eliminate blocks that aren't available in older versions, and to "translate" block IDs for blocks that appear in different editions of Minecraft with different block IDs - colored wool, notably.
That may have been a bad decision and the time would have been better spent making a list of the known defects in the application. Or applying for work.
"Yeah yeah, but can you release the source code so someone can keep working on it?" That's the topic I was getting to. MCEdit and its source code reflect the work I've done on it over the past year and a half. For a lot of that time I had no primary occupation so MCEdit became my full-time job. I was sagely advised to keep all of the source code private. However, I felt a bit obliged to the OSS community for all of the tools I was (and am still) using, so I shared the level-loading code on github under the name pymclevel.
I intend to share MCEdit's source code, but I also intend to get paid for my work. Here is the deal. We'll raise a modest sum through a crowd-funding site like Kickstarter. Once the money is raised, I'll upload MCEdit's full source code to github, licensed under the GPL. If the project is overfunded at all, the surplus will go toward paying my salary for another year of development on MCEdit. I think I will set the price of the source code at $10,000.
The source code isn't pretty. It's by no means the work of a master programmer - I consider myself below average at best. The LevelEditor class is bloated, the MCEdit class has unclear responsibilities, and the Brush tool still doesn't have a plugin system. If you read the code for pymclevel, you will have a good idea of what quality of code to expect. When you get down to it though, the code works for many of its intended purposes and also embodies solutions to problems or hangups that I fixed and later forgot.
I will update the OP with a big fat link to the crowd-funding site as soon as I get it set up.
I'll end this announcement with a big thank-you to everyone who downloaded and used MCEdit. Thanks for coming along with me, it has been a blast getting to know my users and you've given me a taste of what professional software dev can be like. An additional thank-you goes to everyone who has donated any amount of money. Your donations haven't been forgotten and will be counted toward the fundraising goal. A final shout-out goes to everyone who sent in a feature request along with your donation and saw it implemented: the command-line "dumpchests" feature in mce.py, the "Classic Water Flood" filter, and the "Paste" brush (and a few more I'm forgetting) were all added at the requests of donators.
(And a big high-five to dudecon for porting all of his scripts to MCEdit's filter system. What a beast!)
After giving it a lot of thought, I've decided I won't do the source code sale-slash-fundraiser after all. Holding my work hostage and demanding payment from users before it continues is a business model suited only to tyrants and despots, and I'd rather not be remembered that way.
I guess I have a lot to learn.
I really just wanted to be compensated for my time. I doubt the source code itself is worth that much. After reading through it again, I'm not sure it's worth $100, let alone 10g. There will be lots of "He wanted $10k for THAT!?!?" in the near future.
MCEdit's source code will be posted to http://github.com/codewarrior0/mcedit once I've finished cleaning my personal information and passwords out of it.
I'm not sure who I should pass the torch to, but I don't want to leave the "lead developer" position up for grabs so I'm just going to name a few names. TkTech wrote to me and offered on the behalf of #mcdevs to maintain it for me. I'd also be pleased to see Eggplant! or hetmankp continue the work, since both of them have their own projects based on my pymclevel that they would love to have integrated with MCEdit. So, I'll leave it up to the three of them to decide.
I love you all and I hope you all have a wonderful day. :smile.gif:
Perhaps you could stop by there and gently and constructively offer your support. :smile.gif:

:smile.gif:

But take your time Robinton, I can understand the pains of HDD crashing. Happens to me at the most inconvenient times.

The server is already running with cubic chunks (not Cubic Chunks tm) but as we have cross-posted in our forums, we're very much interested in your save format. That said it probably will not plug right into our code out of the box. There a few things we can do here:

Thanks for reading! :biggrin.gif:
Great Troubleshooting info, thanks! Yeah, the current mc1.0.0 Test versions of Cubic Chunks are not yet as functional as the CC versions for older versions of Minecraft are, so please don't judge Cubic Chunks total developement based on that, it's merely an updating issue (mc 1.0.0 was a huge change from earlier beta versions).

So, hopefully soon.
I've already done B. :biggrin.gif:
The SaveConverter menus consider Notchian "worldHeight" World Height increases to be more or less "Vanilla". So, yes, that's under "Vanilla". The underlying save format is pretty much identical, after all.
The future.
You shouldn't ask such things.
Well; a new tweet from Jeb confirms that there will be more newness than expected coming with his "New World Format". Also; Jeb is creating more Texture space for Minecraft. See Below:
[ Tweet Source 2012-02-10 ]
Jeb: Biome data will be saved with the chunks in the new world format. Tool makers can probably use this to restore old maps.

- Can you bring back Crying Obsidian or add some new color/texture blocks ?
Jeb: As soon as I've made preparations for more texture space
