Flowerchild, you begin to scare me. You're... you're... Taking peoples suggestions. Golems and soul urns... Placing candles... When do boat links come out? (dug a quite a few pages back to find that one). Don't get all mojang-ish on us. Packing has also made me question my long held belief in btw. People can make packing factories, as if this was some twisted form of tekkit (pardon the language). This form of minecraft is no longer about pure creativity, but it is a challenge, and forces you to think. These aren't bad things. But... my beliefs are falling apart around me... Tell me that something horrible and disturbing is planned for your next update?
Has anyone done an extensive study on squid spawning? I know they are supposed to spawn in large bodies of water (stated as 5x5x5 in the change logs) but is this a strict rule like ghasts? I've been thinking of taking a section of my ocean and dropping sand/gravel pillars in a 5x5 grid to stop the spawns and lay a sea wall to isolate the outside so that I can use the water for early game automation. Can anyone confirm this will work?
While I won't get into specifics (I never do ), one additional tidbit worth noting is that squid spawning is now also restricted based on lighting as of a few releases ago.
I've said from the very start of this man: I'm not an artist. I do what I can with the limited skills that I have in that area, and there are a number of texture packs available for use with the mod if you'd like something different.
There's no need to be rude about a self acknowledged limitation.
True, but I was also curious as to whether you would implement some nicer textures if someone were to offer them to you?

I am aware but with the change to jack-o-lanterns my underwater lighting options are limited and complicated (at this point in play). I also figure I've got way more sand and gravel than I will need for some time.
I see the point you are trying to make, but it's not really that strong, wolves have had such an impact on SMP PvP that it's hard to call them "pointless".

Yup, that's totally understandable. Just thought I'd mention it as something to keep in mind once you get to glowstone.
Also, there's always the option of putting some torches behind glass or what have you underwater even in the early game.
It would also conflict with everything in the MC inventory system
The worn armor thing is a reasonable abstraction given the way MC's inventory management works. It's also particularly relevant since the inclusion of hats. Heavy armor can get you killed (and it definitely can) even if you are just close to the water now.
Anyways, as with many things BTW, the important part is getting the player to think about what they're doing (NOT to simulate reality), and I believe the armor changes are successful in that regard.

I've considered that and thought it might also be a good way to go about collecting some of the deep clay while at it but I haven't wanted to go about doing the whole excavation to make it work and eat away my limited supply of torches. I just have a small region that I'm interested in safeguarding so I was considering this as a possible quick solution that wouldn't distract me from more pressing matters for very long. That and a sea wall would be a unique addition to my landscape that I've never had a reason to consider before.
I have another project that has moved up in priority (having realized that the padding recipe has recently changed) so this will probably be postponed until later. Glowstone may end up an option soon enough anyway.

maybe make it so hats lower your swim speed? trying to bat squids away from your face will slow you down with regards to swimming

windoge 8 has the saddest excuse for a BSOD, it just tells you the type of error, no stop code, no nothing, just "something went wrong, all your unsaved work has now been lost to the void that is volatile memory"

YETANOTHERCOMPLETELYFAKEEDIT: Wait a minute, FC is taking suggestions... From the community?!?! NOOOOO IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD!!!
So, a little while back I asked the players of BTW the question:
I asked, because with the more recent updates, a lot of you with older world might have had some re-working to do to fix possible damages caused by them. I would have thought this a prime time to think of starting over with a brand spanking new world. Interestingly enough, no one seems to be willing to share on that information.
Odd really, since I would have thought people would be proud of their main world, and willing to share stories, if not sreenshots of their accomplishments. Now I wonder just how many people have kept to playing worlds that were started pre-HCH, or even earlier when the early game was laughably easy to play through :/
Surely there must be players other than myself who started a fresh world, and kept to that? I know, by experience that some of the more recent changes can make this early game challenging (if not difficult) but that's half the fun of the game. Those of you who have chosen to stick with your older worlds, and all the cheat-ish luxuries they provided, really are missing out, you know?
Maybe if FC starts it of others will follow? So, what about it FC? In your current main world, from which update did you start Or do you start afresh with each new groundbreaking* update, like me?
*I don't consider any changes to a tech level I've not reached, or the addition of something as "groundbreaking" however useful they may be. By "groundbreaking", I mean changes to the game which would make a current play-through seem as though you've cheated - such as HCW, which made me question my old world, and the ease of which four trees became a small forest.
I must of missed your question somewhere along the way.
My current main world was started 1 month and a day ago. I haven't really made it far enough in the tech tree to consider it cheating.
I mean I know some people have more time to devote then I do. I also had a recent setback (failure on my part for getting too brave) that put me back about what seemed like 20 MC days.
My main world is also the world that is on my server. The world prior was old, it was started in November of last year. Playing BTW on a well established world was causing noobs to get way to many hand outs.
As soon as I started the new world, I lost players. Problem was solved and I don't give freebies.
I have two worlds at present. One I started about 3 years ago when I first purchased Minecraft. The other I started maybe a couple of months ago (I think when I implemented HC Stratification) as I wanted to start from scratch as I balanced all the early game stuff.
And wall of text again man. I've taken to not even reading your full posts and just quickly scanning over them for what could be summed up in one line. As I think Rampage's post above may indicate: when you say too much, you risk none of it being heard.
Yeah my bad. I got into the habit from a forum when I was constantly having to answer questions after posting. Kinda changed my style to answer them beforehand, by reading through and asking them myself. Still, I'mma try keep a hold on it, and keep posts shorter.
This is off topic, but I bet you are a fan of unlimited texting.
I restart my worlds quite often, and have recently restarted playing on servers again. One of the world I had intended to stick with was started after HC Strata was added. I stopped playing it and started a new world shortly after the changes FC made to gearboxes, requiring their recipe to include 3 pieces of gold.
As for some screenshots, here's a few from where I established my main overworld base:
It was shortly after the last screenshot that I started new worlds that haven't lasted as long.
Many of the recent early-game HC additions have made considering starting a new world a daunting decision, which is a good thing.
EDIT:
One of the things I've enjoyed about BTW is that it has actually presented a reason for building certain things. Mushroom farms are a good example. In vMC, there is absolutely no need to build one. Food is so incredibly plentiful that Mojang really shouldn't have bothered with implementing the hunger system.
Another thing is mob traps.
Those are something I did enjoy building in alpha and beta, but eventually stopped building (health regen with hunger addition) because there just wasn't any point.
There have been times when I've thought "Dammit FC, why'd you do that? That just makes it harder without any good reason." only to eventually find that the game has become more enjoyable because of whatever added difficultly he's added.
Question for the community: Do you keep screenshot logs of your progression in-game?
I've found them good for two reasons:
1) To see how far I've come.
2) Automation designs.
I swear to god I must be the only true optimist left on the planet.

See...I kept telling everyone that wolves are evil despicable creatures, but would anyone listen? No, of course not, and now you're all ******, so "haha...told you so".

No, I work alone as a matter of policy. Like I said, if you want different textures, there are multiple texture pack options.
Yup, that's totally understandable. Just thought I'd mention it as something to keep in mind once you get to glowstone.

No, it's twenty five+ dollars.
Nothing wrong with mentioning it, since you also mention the possibility of other programs.
A twenty year license is pretty impressive though. None of the stuff I had registered way back then is still in use outside of retrocomputing, heh.

Doh! My bad. Setting it up for the Block Dispenser slipped my mind. Will fix for the next release.
EDIT: And fixed.
