Early last week I coordinated the introduction of a new policy to disallow the posting and promotion of smp "cheat" mods, mods designed to "hack" the game in ways which could disrupt Minecraft servers.
I contacted Mojang at the time and eventually heard back a few days ago, they stated that they believe it should be up to server operators to decide which mods are allowed and as we want to follow what Mojang want from this forum we are following their decision.
From today you are now allowed to post smp "hacks" and "cheat" mods, although any that are specifically designed for griefing will still be removed.
Thanks for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience. If you had a mod removed please provide me or any of the moderators of Mapping and Modding with the name and we will return the thread to this section.
Explain: "Specifically Designed Mods for Griefing will still be removed." ~ This can be any mod...This is TOO VAGUE!!!
My Real Questions are below. Question 1: Is Xray allowed, during the last week, mods were removed, mods told authors to do this or that to keep it, and Invisible Texture Packs STAYED on the forum the entire time, when they do the exact same thing. In all honesty, the texture packs and mods are not different, only one major thing, can be turned on and off during gameplay. Thats it.
Question 2: Is FlyMod allowed, During the last week this mod was never told to change, never assaulted by mods, until recently, like a day ago, now Zombe made it where you have to type zFly, zCheat in the Server Properties to be able to use the mod. But Still untouched is the Mod-Manager MyCraft, which has Flying Built-IN. They were not told otherwise.
Question 3: Minimap's - CJB Minimap displayed players on the server, and mobs, until after being forced to removed it, he brought out his bukkit plugin that now allows it. Zan's Minimap Shows Amazing Waypoints, and has a fullzoom feature. This could be used to grief as well, and keep tabs of people easily... Same with CJB's Minimap.
So I need a clear answer on these 3 questions, and what is allowed out of these 3 and which arent. This should keep people from asking the same questions, or causing more hell as well.
Aside from now knowing Mojang's position on the issue, how is this policy "updated" from what was posted a week ago? What's not allowed now versus what was allowed during this past week?
Wait, now that Mojang has stated that server operators should decide what mods are used on their servers, you are re-allowing mods that run even if the server operator has not decided it can be used? This isn't making sense.
Hopefully all of the BS will be sorted out when Mojang implements a modding API. Hopefully the server will be able to ask the client what mods are installed (hopefully along with a CRC Hash or some type of signature) and either disable them while connected or refuse connection. Having forum moderators decide what is and isn't a valid mod is horse ****. Too bad mod sites like Curse's WOW mod haven't taken on in a big way. Searching forum threads (with out a reliable search function) that constantly change positions due to posts is ludicrous ***(just changed that option in my user control panel, woot sort by title, er until i miss an interesting new message buried at the end of a thread) .

Why??! Why my piggy?! I loved-ed you, piggy! I loved-ed you!
You guys (lahren) could have waited for Mojang's policy instead of banning me for cryptic rules. The moderator who banned me first allowed it even and then banned me when he changed his mind. All of your moderators didn't even agree on the policy. Next time situations like these should be handled with care.
I also find it baffling that one can "Cheat" on a game that is so open and undefined as this one. If there was a point to it i could understand that bypassing rules of the game would be "cheating", but this is a big sand box(*), a huge pile of LEGOs, it's what you make of it. I can understand the idea of violating someone's server rules, but **** anyone can start their own server if the one you were using is full of stuffy pricks.

If you've bought the game, you may play around with it and modify it. I'd appreciate it if you didn't use this for griefing, though, and remember not to distribute the changes.
If you read, your Minimap has Player Positions, And mobs. Only works with bukkit plugin ofcourse, and i was stating the past when the Mods were being removed. Also IF you make waypoints to peoples homes, coordinating is easier, such making griefers life easier. I have seen it, and it is effective. Usually groups of 2-6 use minimaps and grief, and use coordinates ingame. they use flymod as well, and other private mods, mark areas, and hit them later. That can be used, it may not be used all the time, or seen as a cheat, but it is, there is no minimap in minecraft, so that means its a cheat.

Hmmmmm, last time I checked, X-ray, Zombe's mods, and all the others, were changes being distributed. Notch needs to clear this up nao!
I think it's hilarious because anyone with half a brain can easily modify the mods so that they work even if the server specifies that they shouldn't be ran.

thats far from the point.
What I am saying is that no matter how much you want to control what mods the clients are using, you will never be able to accomplish it, even with the most sophisticated anti-cheat system. There are things that are client-side such as x-ray and they will always be able to work unless the games architecture changes entirely. Fly and speed on the other hand can be controlled server-side as it is the player positioning and the server can monitor that stuff.

x-ray, fly mod etc. are all now ALLOWED to be posted here. I have unlocked the x-ray topic.

Whitelist and only let people on you trust. Problem solved! Don't expect the modders to solve your vetting problems for you.
