I temporarily resolved my previous issues (after a lot of failed attempts at getting optifine installed via mcpatcher instead) after I found out you could literally just double click the optifine download and install it instantly.
MagicLauncher is still crashing every time I try to use it, and preventing me from using other mods (I like Animal Bikes...) but for now I can at least play minecraft again. I suspect MagicLauncher is conflicting with the newest version of Java, but there wasn't any way to downgrade it without going through hours of effort and making an entire account on their website. Wasted a whole afternoon...
Just to specify, and I believe I posted this information on the MagicLauncher thread:
-I enter magic launcher
-I attempt to play on version 1.8.8 with OptiFine_1.8.8_HD_U_F3.jar
-minecraft instantly crashes
-this only happens with magic launcher, the regular launcher is fine, which leads me to suspect it's not an issue with optifine itself, but with the launcher. The only thing that's changed recently is my java version, which is why I suspect that.
Please help me resolve this. Optifine doesn't seem to be recognized as a mod by MCPatcher anymore so I can't use that as a workaround to install other mods. I need MagicLauncher!
In my post it is abundantly clear that I am trying to install without java or forge. Just because you are unable to grasp why someone would want to do that does not mean my post means something other than what it says. Plus, there are instructions in the OP on how to do so, but they don't work. Those instructions should be updated to at least say they do not work for the latest versions.
I know you were just trying to be helpful, but sometimes the most helpful thing someone can do is keep their mouth shut.
Tim, just install Java (there's nothing wrong with it) and then click on the .jar file you downloaded. It will open this interface:
After you've clicked ''Install'' on that interface, you can happily play MineCraft. None of the instructions are outdated or complicated, in the slightest. There's no need to be rude to others. This will literally take a second or two. Why go through the hassle of manually copying over the files, instead of using the integrated installer that Sp614x has included in OptiFine?
You can find Java, here: https://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
If you have a 64-Bit OS, you ought to install the 64-Bit version. If you're honestly that paranoid about installing Java, you can easily uninstall it, after installing OptiFine.
That said, I don't like the new client's Java version, so I don't use the one Mojang has bundled with it. I find that using a proper installation of Java, yields better performance.

I've a question: Does OptiFine (using the latest versions) work with the Intel Pentium 4 processors?
Yup. I happily played on an old Dell Dimension, from 2005. It had a single-core Pentium 4 CPU, 2GB of DDR1 RAM and no graphics card. MineCraft doesn't need a powerful PC, or tonnes of RAM. And yes, I've tested it recently (three days ago, in fact). That said, I only had 20fps on minimum settings at normal (8 chunks) render distance.

I see.

Preview OptiFine B5 for 1.9.0 is out
- updated shaders documentation
- added shader suppot for more texture formats (signed normalized, integer, unsigned integer)
- fixed shader uniform "entityHurt" to not affect other entities
- compatible with Forge #1907
Hey sp614x, Forge just updated to 1.9.4. Just throwing that out there.
Nice, some Forge updates were on the way.
The first build #1908 is not runnable, it still thinks it is for 1.9 and crashes.
New Forge #1909 is out. It actually works!
Just noticed, I accidentally turned off Lazy Chunk Loading and tried to turn it back on, but it just reloaded the chunks and stayed off. Any idea why?
Lazy Chunk Loading is only effective for single-core CPUs. Even when it was on it wasn't doing anything.
So...Optifine 1.9.4 B4 just works with Forge #1909. No need for an update except to give us the changes that were made to the 1.9 version?
Forge #1909 is identical to #1907, only recompiled for 1.9.4.
OptiFine B4 for 1.9.4 is functionally identical to B4 for 1.9 and it should work with Forge #1909.
Then why does it exist?
For single-core CPUs...
I just have to say being able to disable "Dynamic FOV" is a godsend. This has bothered me for ages. THANK YOU for adding this option. I was just walking in an area with a speed beacon and was pleasantly reflecting how much better the world looks without the distortion. (I'm only using FOV: 80)
On a related note, I wonder if it's possible to add a better projection to make it less distorted on the edges, like Panini projection. Just a thought.
