With all due respect, I think it's common logic for people to read the first post for themselves, especially when it's right there in front of them, with all of the information to read, when they first find the post.
To be fair, though, sp614x could add a highlighted/colored/etc. message at the top of the forum post saying to read that page first BEFORE asking for help. That would hopefully save some frustration, as far as I know.
I do agree with you on how frustrating it is to have to go back to find the answer you're looking for when told to, but it's also bothersome for the people answering your question since it's been done on here for 2,000+ pages.
I'm not trying to be a bad guy, by the way. I'm just putting my two cents on how this should be.
Wow, thanks for the 1.8.8! It works well with realms, and I haven't tested my shaders much yet, but it did load one automatically. Changing it crashed my graphics driver though, but still epic news!
EDIT: It also seems that with some shaders, hitting E (inventory) crashes my graphics drivers. Other than that everything so far seems to work smooth.

I get that with an old version of Sildur's "water only" shaders, but all others are fine. So it's either specific to the shaderpack or just something that AMD drivers don't like. What's your GPU/driver?

I have a mobile video card, AMD 8800A or something like that. It works fine for shaders usually, but the last version I have used shaders with was for 1.7.10. I heard there were changes for 1.8 shaders, so it could be related to that. Still, it works great for if I just want some shader screenshots of a realms world.
I'll also mention that with the optifine 1.8.8 shader thing that when I'm using shaders in my inventory, the background behind the text is missing. This only occurs if I'm only looking at my inventory, if I look in a chest the text appears fine. This occurs with all shaderpacks (that I can tell of)
Try moving the world to her computer and testing that. It doesn't matter if you both have the same settings. You could have your settings maxed out and she could have hers as fast as they can go and it wouldn't matter (you would probably just lag more).
Also check your firewall bc it prevents me from hosting LAN worlds (Try going to your firewall inbound rules (I believe it's Firewall Advanced Settings or something like that) and enabling both "Java(TM) Platform SE Binary" sections for anything).
Sorry for taking so dang long to reply, I posted this and then pretty much forgot about it. Kinda like that Ronco rotisserie oven thing ("set it and forget it").
Anyway, we already tried entering a world on her computer and I couldn't join, so my theory is that it has something to do with the singleplayer only stuff, like fast math and lazy chunk loading, because we both had all of those things on.
My guess is the whatever happened went something like this: Since I had to go into a singleplayer game to open my world to LAN, the singleplayer only performance options stayed on on my client because my Optifine thought it was still a singleplayer game, but my mom had to join the LAN game from the multiplayer menu, so her OptiFine thought that it was a multiplayer server, so it turned off the singleplayer only options on her client, thus causing a disconnect in the way her client and my client process the game, causing her to be unable to join.
Optifine is first of all a client-sided mod. You can join any server that does not run Optifine with a client that does run Optifine. (I do not think you can even install Optifine on a server, but I do not know for sure) Different settings in Optifine should never influence your ability to join any server.
<more snip>
I once thought it would be a good idea to install Optifine server-side. I corrupted 5 chunks in the first 2 minutes just by walking around, there was extreme lag (probably from incompatibility), and ended up corrupting all the server files because I had no clue what the heck was going on so I kept restarting the server every time it crashed xD
When you mentioned the Ethernet thing, I just kind of thought of something. Are both computers on either wireless or Ethernet (not one on each)? The issue I had was with my PC hooked up to ethernet and my friend's laptop hooked up to the Wifi.
We have separate hookups for each (our main ISP only provides Ethernet so I had to get a Wifi router from Walmart to get any Wifi signal at all and get another Internet box thing so we could hook up our dinosaur PC), so maybe if they're on different Internet setups they could be running on different IP addresses? (not just local, but completely different public IP addresses)
I'm going to test and see if this happens with my tablet and PC (my friend isn't here right now and I don't have an extra laptop).
AFTER TESTING: My tablet and PC are indeed running on different IPs. That would explain why we couldn't connect to each other xD
hey guys, so i am trying to play minecraft 1.8.8 with those new fancy OptiFine_1.8.8_HD_U_S6 and every time i load up any world local or multy player, the game screen area just keeps flashing and i cant do anything. it looks like it is hanging and flipping between main screen and loading screen. i hear water near me when i join a server which means it loaded the world i just cant get the video of it to load LOL. any ways i have done a fresh clean install of minecraft and installed optifine via the jar file installer listed above. any idea why it is doing this? im useing a gtx 660 with the latest drivers and i doubt my Intel Haswell core "devils Canyon" I5 4690K @ 3.50 GHz or 8 gigs of ram have anything to do with it.... do any advice?
EDIT:
ok just updated my nvidia drivers a new one droped last night so yea.... fixed it LOL
Anyway. Have you tried to connect to your mother's LAN server in vanilla Minecraft? No Forge, no mods, just the original Minecraft.
If you run into the same problem doing this, then something is wrong/weird about your network setup.
From your description, I have understood that you can see your mother hosting the LAN server, but when you try to connect, you time out.
This could be, as madam Puppyspirit already pointed out, because your, her, or your router's Firewall settings are too high.
This also could be some weird phenomenon that I encountered once at one of my friends':
Back then I could not connect to his LAN game directly from the multiplayer menu, but I could connect by using his computer's LAN IP.
This is how you test if this works. step 1-5 are on your mother's computer:
1. If you open a LAN game, it says something like: "LAN game hosted on port 12345."
2. I hope you are on Windows, if you are not, try googling "how do I find my LAN IP on a Mac/Unix system."
3. In Windows, open Menu Start, type "cmd" and hit Enter. A black and white command window should pop up.
4. In the command window type "ipconfig/all" and hit Enter. A whole list of information should pop up.
5. Search in the list for IPv4 address under the network connection you are actually connected to. This could for instance be wireless, or ethernet. The IPv4 address should look something like "192.168.0.8" and sometimes it says "<Preferred>".
6. In your minecraft, go to multiplayer, direct connect and type in your mother's IPv4 address : the port number. For instance: "192.168.0.8:12345".
7. Connect.
I hope this works.
NOTE: I live in the world of IT, networking, packets, VMs, servers, computers, etc.... A small lesson follows, lol!
Good points!!
You are right, ultimately, Optifine is a client side mod and it doesn't matter or care which servers you connect to. If you open to LAN, Optifine doesn't change or do anything. Also, Optifine is not supported on a private server, it will crash.
I want to say this though: if you are using Forge, any and all mods on the server (be that single player opened to LAN or a full private server) must be installed and working on the client -- and the same version. If she is missing mods, or they are older versions it will not connect.
The next thing, your router only looks at and blocks WAN (internet) -> LAN connections (where all connections are blocked by default). Any LAN -> LAN traffic / WLAN -> LAN traffic / LAN -> WLAN traffic is not monitored and is fully open all the time.
Your computer asks for a connection, the router knows to expect data back, so it stores that connection history in a database and opens the port. When the session is done, it removes that connection from the database and blocks the port again.
So, whether your computer is connected wired or wireless, it doesn't matter. It's all behind the firewall, and in the same 'subnet' (192.168.1.0 / 255.255.255.0) -- so, every computer can talk to each other.
Every Windows computer comes with the 'windows firewall' which also blocks all incoming traffic by default. When you fire up Minecraft, the Open to LAN, or a private server Windows usually asks if it is allowed to receive connections to that program when it is open. You may also have an antivirus/firewall program installed on your computer that replaces the windows firewall.
If you can't see the multiplayer game than windows is probably blocking the connection in the windows firewall.
-----------------
In the screenshot, if you click WINDOWS FIREWALL in the lower left, click ALLOW A PROGRAM THROUGH THE FIREWALL at the top left.
Click CHANGE SETTINGS if you are on Windows 8.1 or 10.
Look for Minecraft or Java(TM) Platform SE binary to see if it is in the list. If not, click ALLOW ANOTHER APP, browse to C:\Program Files\Java\bin\javaw.exe and add it. Check off the PRIVATE and/or PUBLIC buttons. Then hit OK.
You can do the same for:
C:\Program Files\Java\bin\java.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\bin\javaw.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\bin\java.exe
You want the (x86) ones if you use 32bit Java on your 64bit computer. You don't really need to add the Minecraft.exe, but you can if you prefer, all connections/downloads are outbound so automatic. You only need the java.exe files if you run a private server.
Frames rates are only 15 FPS. Not good, especially when trying to record for youtube. Normally I can play at 60 FPS even while recording for youtube no problem.

(I do not think you can even install Optifine on a server, but I do not know for sure) Different settings in Optifine should never influence your ability to join any server.
[/snip]
Thing is, the server is on my computer, and I do have Optifine running, with the performance options that change the way the server itself runs like lazy chunk loading enabled, but since Optifine is client-side, the Optifine on my mom's client doesn't detect that my game has those performance options running. I'm going to try opening my game to LAN with my client running Optifine with the performance options that do affect the server, and my mom running vanilla 1.8.7 and see if the same thing happens, then have my mom open a world to LAN while still running vanilla 1.8.7, and I'll try joining it, still running Optifine on my client to see what happens. Be right back.
EDIT: Okay, test 1 complete, and as expected, my mom failed to connect. She could see the server just like when we both had optifine on, and she failed to connect, just like before. Also, the error message on her screen reads "io.netty.channel.ConnectTimeoutException: connection timed out:" And no, her game didn't crash. Anyway, on to test 2.
EDIT 2: Okay, well this is unexpected. For some reason, my game doesn't even see her LAN game. Well, I just came up with a 3rd test. I'm going to turn off my performance options but keep Optifine on and open a LAN game, while keeping optifine off on my mom's client. BRB.
EDIT 3: Once again, unexpected results. My mom once again fails to connect to my game for some reason. This whole thing is confusing. I think my mom and I are just going to have to disable Optifine when we want to play on LAN.
Frames rates are only 15 FPS. Not good, especially when trying to record for youtube. Normally I can play at 60 FPS even while recording for youtube no problem.

S6 is a preview designed to work with shaders, you need E1 for maximum FPS.
So no one replied to my problem... Oh well.
I have figured out that Optifine is not the problem of the increased "ghost entities" or fps-drop, but the Bad Local variable crash in bit-code when you remove Optifine, of course should not happen.
Again, if anyone has the slightest idea, as to what could be causing these "ghost entities", please contact me. @grimallq, perhaps? You seem to know a lot of stuff.
I recently donated to the awesome creator of this mod a few days ago and received a cape as a gift. I activated the cape on my username with the default, red texture saying OF in orange. After that I could enjoy it ingame.
Anyway, I joined the server I usually play on but other players who are using Optifine as well somehow aren't able see my cape... (While they have the option in the settings to see the capes turned to ON, as well as in the Skin Customization Settings of MC).
However, I can see the cape myself at all times.
All players including myself on this server are using MC version 1.8 and are using recent Optifine versions as well. I tested it out with a friend and he was the only one able to see the cape if I just joined WITHOUT teleporting. If I teleported to somewhere and back, the cape was gone for him except for me. The cape also disappeared when my friend left the area/region I was in. When he came back, my cape was gone for him as well...
Is this a known bug or has it to do with the use of different Optifine versions on 1.8.x?? I'm currently using 1.8.0 but already tested this with 1.8.8 and Optifine HD U E1 and all got the same results...
Thanks already for looking into this where possible
