well the lag i used to have seems to have gone away from multiplayer. though I now am noticing some things like lily pads and sugar cane appear white instead of their normal colors. Any ideas? ive looked through all the graphics settings and nothing seems to be on a low quality to only affect those things.
Just get the Ultra? Its out right now and has even more features. I don't even know people get the lower versions.
The optifine ultra does not help me. I'm not sure why though my computer is crap so maybe that is the reason. I downloaded one of the early version of ultra for 1.8 but nothing really changed. Maybe I'll try it again.
Edit: Besides I have a mac and I can't disable OpenGL Threading when I use the multicore chunk loading setting.
The link on the first page says A4 but if you actually click on it you will see it brings you to the B2 download. Spx must have forgotten to change the label on this page =P
My Friends can't use Ultra it makes their computers lag really bad so they have to use standard
Because you have to change settings to make it work. Read first post, it explains how to change settings for max fps. Also, it took 21 days for 1.7.2 to have a Standard version after final Ultra release, so don't hold your breath.
Optifine and Thermal Expansion really need to find a way to work together. Everytime I install any version of Thermal Expansion with Optifine, the game doesnt even load up or give any kind of crash report. That console that shows up with the AT Launcher doesnt help either cause I cant make heads or tails out of that tech jargon.

Add option to "disable" optimized chunk loading and get back the slower chunk loading? it seems to be causing minecraft to stutter massively and make the game basically unplayable on any settings. make chunk updates match the FPS your getting like the old minecraft versions! it runs way smoother that way. Or even half your framerate! My FPS would rise up into the 100's when chunk loading was like that like in beta or 1.7.10 but in 1.8 my FPS is terrible.
Why can't you guys use Ultra? Its the same thing plus it usually has more lag removing features. Look at this picture:

This is my favourite video! It's really funny! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGeKSiCQkPw
Really need some help with this.
Works fine with my other laptop with a Nvidia 710m.

Are you sure this doesn't happen without Optifine?
Same thing happened to me.
Here are images with and without Optifine
