Everyone I know saw performance improvements. Then again everyone I know has Quad-Core CPUs. I alone went from 12 to 24 chunks at the same FPS.
I think a lot of people are comparing Optifine 1.7 with vanilla 1.8 instead of vanilla 1.7 Vs vanilla 1.8
At first I thought performance was worse too (i7 4770k + 280X) but eventually noticed that I hadn't even tried 1.7 without Optifine.
Still, I can go from 800fps way down to 26 fps in a built-up area (like a mob grinder) in 1.8, where 1.7 frame rates were never that unstable.
Also, I found that odd too, V-sync was NOT on in my video settings or control panel for my graphics card, I honestly just thought it was an optifine bug or it was just.... Well idk.
In Optifine's video settings you need to move the fps slider all the way to the left and it will change to v-sync. Your graphics control panel might call it something different, "wait for vertical refresh" for example. Hope this helps!

Give computer specs, Minecraft version, and optifine version, and help shall be given. Personally, I play MC on a craptop and have never had any issue with stuttering.
Well just generally speaking i'm saying, I think all these lag spikes are plaguing users and the frame count doesn't register it. And speaking "craptop", I've got an xps inspiron gen 2 with a Nvidia Geforce Go 6800 ultra. There should be a forum dedicated to who has the crappiest computer, but still runs Minecraft anyways... Kudos to sp614x and good luck.
This may be a sort of crazy idea, but maybe you should create a bug report onto the tracker with the ways to fix the list of performance problems you posted and/or a direct message to Mojang about this issue?
There have been / are very technical bugs reported, including code suggestions. See a current one created by panda4994 for a great example of what they should look like https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-73302
Will they use the code provided? Not exactly in any case, any supplied code would have to be at least somewhat re-done to fit the internal style / format of the Mine Craft code (and MCP isn't it). And in some cases they can't / won't use it at all due to already on-going internal work that it would break or overlap with, especially given the constant refactoring they're working on. It is always worth posting though, the more detailed the better (again, see the MC-73302 bug linked above).

I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro and 1.8 vanilla runs pretty much the same as 1.7.10 both FPS and lag wise. That isn't to say great, but not any worse. The chunk loading is better with the multi threading. The computer has a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo processor (launch date Q1 of 2008), and a GeForce 9400M (again, 2008 tech, said to be worse than an Intel HD 4000 series). Two upgrades I did make were an SSD and 8 GB of memory. The memory doesn't make much of a difference as I still allocate only the default 1GB to minecraft. The SSD makes a big difference in disk latency but that doesn't help stuff like FPS or tick lag.
Oh, and I can't say "who" has the crappiest computer but still runs Minecraft, but there are a number of bugs on the bug tracker that reference early generation Pentium 4's with 512mb of memory total. They complain about various things (often that they can't run 512x512 resource packs...), but apparently it does still run for them.
EDIT: Oh, and it is the fact that Minecraft does still support (even if poorly) computers that are ~12 years old that Mog and others complain about. The advanced features in newer versions of OpenGL are not even remotely possible on something that archaic. Try seeing which other company releases games that would run at all on something like that...

Lol, that's better than my laptop bro. It doesn't even have a graphics card in it. XD
I'll have to wait until this happens again but I believe my computer is crashing because of something in optifine. The only problem is that it doesn't give me a crash report, my screen just goes black. But today I just left it on the Minecraft menu and it crashed and gave me a report (I didn't think of uploading it...derp), so i'll test it again and see if it gives it to me.

If it gave you a crash report there will be a copy in C:>Users>(Your username)>AppData(might have to tell it to show hidden folders)>Roaming>.minecraft>crash-reports
Also, you can enter %appdata% and skip the whole address business up to the .minecraft folder.
even better way of doing it is once you locate the .minecraft folder create a shortcut and then place said shortcut on desktop no more need to do a search or do through folder upon folder looking for the location.

I was literally just about to edit my post to say that! XD
I swear to even run a GUI based user interface, a computer/laptop has to have a graphics card in it, even if it is integrated.
To run a monitor, you need a graphics processor. I used an 8086 back in the dark ages and it had one, even though it had ASCII text only in monochrome. Mario_Kart is right, it is there even if on-chip or on-die integrated with the CPU.
Keep working on this mod. It helps in survival and makes the game more enjoyable. I go from a max of 10 fps to a max of 20 fps. Keep doing what your doing.

P.S. My computer is ten years old.
Might want to consider getting a new computer soon, bud. Even if it's just slightly better.
Okay this is bothering the absolute heck out of me, LAG IS NOT YOUR FRAMERATE!
Stop saying your game is lagging, your game is not lagging on single player It can't lag on single player, Lag is latency for online, and optifine has no affect on your lag, Your internet connection or the server affect the lag.
The reason we are here for Optifine is to improve our Framerate or FPS, Stop calling it lag, Yes I know what you mean and so do others but that doesn't mean using the wrong word for it is a good thing.
Just ran some tests with Java 8 which should have better garbage collecting. The results are a bit better, but not much. The lag spikes are still there and with the same frequency, but they are a bit smaller. Overall Java 8 seems to be better suited to handle the memory load of 1.8.

Anyway, I hope that we can see the 1.8 update for OptiFine soon! And I especially hope mojang can figure out their jumbled mess.
