Has anyone successfully gotten Optifine to work with 1.7.4? Because whenever I try to do it, it just crashes with java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: bcl.

I am going to have to jump to the conclusion that you have not read the main post correctly.
It says 1.7.2 and not 1.7.4 because it is not ready for 1.7.4 yet. You can't just use the 1.7.2 version with 1.7.4

and it's also a beta give all your crash reports/other problems/ etc... It can help with development
When it says "preview" you are playing it for testing not really for the mod itself

I know this very well. Why I am asking, is because there are people who say that this actually works with 1.7.4 which I doubt, but they say it for a reason.
One cuestion for what is the option "fast render ON/OFF" i only see, when its off, the fog, its for something else?
in ON or OFF increase the fps?
Fast Render uses a faster rendering method which should result in more FPS.
There may be mods which are not compatible with it (most of the mods work OK), so there is an option to turn it OFF if necessary.
Every time I attempt to use a texture pack at all the game immediately crashes, and I cannot launch if one is selected. Wonder if it is related.
Edit: Bit more testing, this seems to be related to Forge and Optifine together, neither separately crashes the game.
The problem seems to be the Forge runtime deobfuscation and OptiFine accessing protected fields.
In vanilla all obfuscated classes are in one package and accessing protected fields/methods is OK.
Forge makes runtime deobfuscation of the minecraft code and places the classes in different packages, but it does not do this for the OptiFine classes, so they stay in the default package. Then OptiFine classes can no longer access protected fields from vanilla classes as they are located in different packages. Ugh.
1.7.2 will work on 1.7.4, I've had a bit of trouble getting it to work with Forge but if you're not bothered about that then you can just open the Optifine jar and click install, this will create a profile for it which you can select in the minecraft launcher
How on earth did you manage to install Optifine 1.7.2 in minecraft 1.7.4?! Every way I try I end up crashing.

The graphics card can not load all the textures, the maximum texture atlas size is limited by the graphics card.
OptiFine recognizes and loads more textures than vanilla (connected textures).

it wont mess up a world, no
Thanks if anything happens ill post a crash report
Here's my crash log. It seems to work until I press ESC to use the menu.

The beta version is working great so far although i have not done that much with it. It has removed or reduced the glitch (I'm not sure if it's a glitch) that i get high fps as in 80-200 but it still looks choppy. And it now makes my fps more stable. Great job! One thing i would like to request is that the old render settings the tiny-extreme be put back into 1.7.2 with this mod. I liked that so much more then this 1 through however many chunks. If you could do that it would be great because i really liked it. Anyway. Great job on optifine as a whole! It's such a great mod and although i get relativity high frames as is it fixes that glitch and makes my fps stable I PVP and can play minecraft a lot easier and a lot smoother. Keep up the great work! And i will report any glitches i find if any
-Download the Optifine Jar
-Open the Jar file, click 'install'
-Once installed, open the minecraft launcher
-Click the profile dropdown in the bottom left and click 'Optifine'
-Click play
So after that, launch MC, press F3 and show us screenshot where we'll see Minecraft 1.7.4 and Optifine
I'm pretty sure it works for both 1.7.4 and 1.7.3 The last time i heard
I got one too on Mac. Hopefully mine helps a bit as well.
Good work xp614x!
I am going to have to jump to the conclusion that you have not read the main post correctly.
It says 1.7.2 and not 1.7.4 because it is not ready for 1.7.4 yet. You can't just use the 1.7.2 version with 1.7.4
I make stuff on youtube check me out there gentlegiantJGC
When it says "preview" you are playing it for testing not really for the mod itself
Fast Render uses a faster rendering method which should result in more FPS.
There may be mods which are not compatible with it (most of the mods work OK), so there is an option to turn it OFF if necessary.
Ugh.
Also if i try out the preview can it mess up my world?

The graphics card can not load all the textures, the maximum texture atlas size is limited by the graphics card.
OptiFine recognizes and loads more textures than vanilla (connected textures).
