The one thing Jeb forgot, the thing YOU wanted the most!
Rideable Controllable Wolves V2 for Beta 1.4 by KodaichiZero OMG so coool! All coding done by me, some original classes modified
Instruction + demonstration video (for both versions!) thoughtfully provided by IIAztecII
Note: V1 of this mod was actually a glitchApril fool's jokethat turned the player into a wolf, so I've made a version now with actually rideable wolves. They can be controlled and whatnot, etc. Read the thread again for updated information.
So tell me, were you as excited about wolves as I was? How about when you found out they couldn't be ridden? That must have been a real heart-breaker for you, since riding a wolf is obviously the best thing in the world. But PHOOEY, I said! If Mojang didn't want us to be riding wolves (maybe so we wouldn't crush their backs?) then we must go against the rules! Thanks to my hard efforts all of this afternoon, Wolves are now rideable and fully controllable. So let's take a look, shall we?
Players must first tame a wolf, like normal. Then the player has to right-click the wolf WHILE JUMPING. If done correctly, the player will be on the wolf's back. Once on the wolf, the controls are very simple. WASD controls its movement, and spacebar makes it jump. But don't try to mount a wolf that isn't tamed! They won't like you on their back.
The wolf walks about the same speed as the player, but if you jump while walking, you can make it go faster. Also, be very careful when jumping down large heights! With the player's extra weight on its back, it will take increased fall damage. Also, make sure not to bonk your head on trees or low ceilings. That can really put a dent in your HP, especially if you have graphics set to "Fast" for some reason.
Summary of Abilities:
[*:2sackrpm] Able to be fully controlled by the player
[*:2sackrpm] Needs to be tamed first, then right clicked while jumping
[*:2sackrpm] Takes increased fall damage if player is on back
[*:2sackrpm] Goes faster while jumping
[*:2sackrpm] Cannot attack foes while being ridden
[*:2sackrpm] Can be attacked by its rider, unfortunately
Issues:
[*:2sackrpm] May have been released on April 1st
[*:2sackrpm] Wolves sometimes cause graphical glitches with the player
[*:2sackrpm] Overrides some default classes, may not be compatible with every other mod
Instructions:
[*:2sackrpm] ModLoader is NOT REQUIRED!
[*:2sackrpm] If you are using a Mac computer, search for a special Mac installation tutorial if you have problems installing the mod. "Minecrafter" or something like that might work.
[*:2sackrpm] Just drag the files into the jar and DELETE META-INF.
Both of these mods modify different base classes, so they may not work with everything - but they do work with each other. Version one actually replaces the player's skin with a wolf skin, and the standard biped model becomes like a wolf. This affects all players, even in SMP mode, though it is purely graphical. It also affects a few other mobs, like zombies and skeletons. Even though these mods do actually work at the same time, I do not reccommend doing this... if you don't get what I mean, click here.
Always remember - wolves are really damn rare and hard to find!
Actually, I must complain about the realisticity of this mod, imagine yourself as a small dog related creature, and then imagine someone's fat ass weighing you down, you would have to carry about four or five times your own weight, this would be extremely realistic, so no this definitely wasn't something I wanted most in the update, and jeb did a good job realisticising minecraft.
Yeah, I already thought of that one.

And that's why I say "kick reason to the curb"! They may be small, they may be fragile, but nothing gets between a man and his mount. For a companion as faithful as a wolf, a player's weight is no burden to bear.

awesome. once again I marvel at how you're actually modding while most of the rest of us are busy sulking that there was an update.
Stupidity on the rise with a 40% chance of shitstorms.
If you're wondering why it says Vortexlord...that's what I call myself, aswell as Matborg.
Nope, there's other mods on the second page that are for 1.4

I learned. Anyways, you should keep this a real mod, because playing as a wolf is kinda cool.
Nothing to see here, move along.
Shhh! don't spoil it for everyone else!
But while you're at it, go find some zombies, skeletons, or zombie pigmen. You will be pleasantly surprised.
You might as well create Midna while you're at it. Oh, dammit.
What'd you do them? I'm too lazy to update to 1.4...
