So far, it appears that the official pistons being added will not launch entities like players/NPCs, sand, and TNT. This is not the only difference.
Hippoplatimus has stated that he intends on adjusting the mod to allow for launching entities again.
That wasn't actually what I was asking. I was asking if we would keep the machines we've built out of pistons when 1.7, or if we would have to re-build them.
An alternative way of asking would be to ask if the pistons in 1.7 will have the same block ID as in this mod.

Do you need to have the original Piston mod AND the pistonMP mod? Because when I do so it crashes and giving a error telling that Modloader can't add the renders :S
no get rid of the original but wait a day or too as that version has a powering bug

I'd wanted this mod ported to Bukkit/ItemCraft simply *because* pistons are coming in 1.7 - all the new stuff bound to be added into the new update is going to break the hell out of the game (read: Bukkit), and I'd be willing to bet a patchstorm like what we saw for 1.6 is imminent. I'm not budging off of 1.6 until 1.7.x does backflips and makes quiche via telekinesis.
That, and.. no offense to MC's artists.. but I like the look of this piston more than the half-metal/half-wood 'official' ones.

Since 1.7 is the "Piston update", will this mod shut down? Can you at least just make this PistonTweaks, which re-allows the launching of items and sand/gravel, and make the number of push-able blocks to 16 instead of 12?

I would think that it would, but who knows?
It's a moot point anyway. Some people change their piston base IDs to avoid mod conflicts.

It's obviously good enough to get into vanilla (and we know how strict Notch is about adding mods).
