hey guys, I dunno if anyone following here download immediately when I linked the forge project but we did find one more rare bug that can cause problems. I uploaded a fixed version Beta 1.0.1 last night the same time I posted my map thread up, so hopefully you got that version.
If not, it will be fixed in the first update released in around 2 weeks but if the bug happens to you your game will lag and get very slow, maybe even appear to freeze even though the player can move around. It is due to a rare occurrence where some entities could pile up in the void and not despawn because they are within view of commands but apparently not within view of the despawning and void damage routines of minecraft. It happens more commonly on low render distances. If it happens to you. Switch the difficulty to peaceful and back until the next update. As far as I know it was successfully fixed in Beta V1.0.1.
Hope everyone enjoys the map! Let me know what you think over on the new thread!

Hey guys, we just had a builder meeting last night to plan the content for the next 2 expansions! They will come out every 2 weeks as we keep slowly improving the map! Have any of you guys played and have some suggestions for us?
Things that will for sure be added:
- we are planning on releasing a new area March 18 and the following update 2 weeks after. One will be mesa themed with a new ruin area and possibly some of a rocky asteroid chain I've been working on. We are also working on a firey and nether themed new asteroid chain with a custom biome design and volcanos and stuff.
- I want to add a few more tech items as I wasn't able to finish all my ideas by Beta 1.0. Still on the this is items like the: Chainsaw (treecapacitator in vanilla), Fire Extinguisher (for fighting forest fires), item retriever (possibly a new mode on the grappling rod)
- I want to improve some seasonal effects, for instance, instead of the time skip in the night during summer and the sun freezing at high noon to give summer longer day and shorter night, I can just make the moon move faster overnight, it will look more natural. I can make a similar improvement to the first winter day.
- I'm gonna fix a few small bugs I noticed in creatures and possibly add a few new abilities: for instance bees give 1sec poison.
- block lag has been reported on some computers that is probably from command blocks. I have some ideas on how to reduce it further though I have tried to keep it low all along.
Any other ideas you guys got for me?
I'm also wondering if I should retire this thread and move to the map thread or if I should keep this for more technical and regular posts. Thoughts?

Hmm, I'd say just for the sake of keeping the new thread alive, I'd post things like that over there. You're probably more likely to get opinions and ideas over there than here too since more people look at that area of the forum than this one

I wrote about my adventures on the Alpha version of the OathBros/Caplex Build Team's map Space Expedition in my blog! (Discontinued)
For my experiences of the Beta versions of that same map, I started a YouTube series, which (due to prior knowledge from the Alpha) ended up being very fast paced and highly focused on showing off as much of the custom stuff as I can.
ok, well I feel like it is not the place to post super technical changelogs, but I guess i got discord for that :P. Might be good to post the "coming content" and ask for opinions there at least. And for course the announcements for each expansion.
I'll write something up more professionally to post over there in a little bit.
How you doing bethel? You found time to update your save yet? The last 2 updates have added tons of fun stuff, I'd love to get your comments on the 20+ new creatures, tech recipes, and changes.

As you can probablly tell from my username, I'm SnapshotDesign from the curse post.
I have some good ideas for quests
Find all alien tomes
scan 1 mob
scan 5 mobs
scan 10 mobs
scan 20 mobs
scan 30 mobs
scan all mobs
make all the tech items
make the glider
upgrade to the jetpack
a completed quest for each year you make it through
upgrade your biosuit to full armor protection
get the night vision
get the augmented limbs
beat each boss
Also add a reward system so you get materials for the quests you complete
and ItemBound is a special resource pack that works with Optifine and applies custom textures to items when you give them a certain name and an enchantment.
Found a Typo: the "then" in the Jungle Longbow's description should be "than". I know that that's super knitpicky, but you want the map to be as good as possible.
a completed quest for each year you make it through
upgrade your biosuit to full armor protection
get the night vision

beat each boss

I honestly don't think that your quest ideas would fit in with the rest of the map very well, they'd make a lot more sense in a map that's more RPG-style and makes a habit of being comically unrealistic. Part of what I like best about Space Expedition, though, is that progression is close enough to realistic that you could imagine it happening in the real world in a similar scenario. Like, if you were stranded on an abandoned island with no humans around anywhere and no way to contact anyone, what would you get as a reward for observing animals? Probably not an engine for an airplane. This map is (obviously, it's Minecraft!) more abstract than reality, but nowhere near abstract enough for that sort of thing to feel like it's supposed to be there.
The only way I feel that Space Expedition would be able to implement these quests without breaking its own rules would be quest givers; but who would that be? The only sentient creatures players will ever meet who have any interest at all in even talking to them are villagers, and they've been running around as zombies for who knows how long before the player cured them. So that's probably not gonna be people who have engines and the sort lying around in their basements (not that their village looks like they were technologically advanced enough anyway).
If you find a way to make those quest rewards work with the style of the map, I'd be glad to hear it, but right now, I just don't see how it could work

i understand, but theres always a way to make a map better. I had discussed with dan on the curse page some suggestions and the idea of questing just came up. Maybe instead of quests they can just be like little achievements. At the beginning, you're given a quest book, and you just make a little mark or note whenever you complete it. Kinda like in the better achievements mod.
Also, I started watching your series of videos on this map with spirit. I really like them!
I'm not averse to quests but I agree with Lezandria that the idea of ones that give you item rewards is a little too RPG-like for this map. That said, we can give more practical rewards for the quests I am planning.
For instance:
- finding 5 writings is already a quest, the reward is you translate the alien language and get to read the writing artifacts you've found so far in the artifacts chest. Some of them are just story but a few give useful clues about things.
- The recipes basically already are quests. The biosuit thinks of a new piece of tech or item you can make and gives you the quest to find those items. The recipe info appears in the holodeck to remind you in case you forget. When you collect the items you get to make the cool new thing.
You are right that scanning the creatures basically has no reward other then bragging rights right now. Well, other then you getting to read the info on them and see them in holograms. sometimes that info contains some useful information that might not be obvious but usually not. What is a kind of reward that scanning them could give you? (there are currently a little over 80 creatures btw). An easy thing would be a congratulations message from the biosuit. It could maybe also trigger something like a tech unlock related to creatures? That would fit with the map.
Here's an example:
"Biosuit: danaphanous, way to go! You have scanning 30 kinds of creatures already! I've been studying the biology of the native creatures and it seems quite different then ours. For one thing, many appear to have strange powers that defy physics. I've attributed this to the power cores that many of them possess which collect charge from the stratosphere. However, we could probably use these very same abilities to capture them and store them in a warp bubble! Then you could transport them easily for study and place them down anywhere! What do you think?
Recipe 'Virtual Creature Storage Device' added to the holodeck"
Using this idea we could have something like the following:
10 creatures: creature capture capsule unlock (instead of just giving it in the starting chest)
30 creatures: virtual creature storage device
50 creatures: X
70 creatures: X
I don't know that there will be a reward for "all" because I keep adding new ones to the new biomes lol. But if I ever get to 100 maybe they'll be a special thing for that.
Also, A challenge list would work very well with this map. Good idea! I could even leave one in one of the holodeck chests. If you guys that have played want to take a stab at starting one I may put it up on the main map thread! Challenge lists generally work pretty well with survival maps as they are an easy way to give direction and guide the player towards activities that will result in them completing parts of the map. I'll think on what i can say there without spoiling anything major.

I saw in one map called stranded deep the challenges were shown by renamed pieces of paper with the challenge: I.e (build a shelter) in a chest so you could easily throw them away whenever you had them completed.
I want to make this map really well known cause I don't think it's getting the credit it deserves.
Do you think the challenges should be written in a book
or each is written on a paper in a chest in the holodeck?
also, can you add on the lore of the capture devices:
"this device is not able to capture all mobs, only the unevolved (vanilla) creatures" or something like that?
Yeah, In a written book please, and try to be compact if possible. I will put special lore and turn the name blue and stuff for emphasis so just giving me a text list is fine. Haha, I think the map is doing pretty well given it only came out 4 days ago, but thanks for the support!
I'll amend the lore on the capture device, I tried to make it clear by saying only tamable and curable creatures (aka farm animals, ocelots, horses, wolves, and zombie villagers) but it sounds like that is still too vague.
Whenever you get a good start on that challenge list (and you should ask some of the alpha testers for opinons cuz they have played a bit more as well) post it up on the main thread so I can get more people's feedback on the idea. I want this to be a community driven development and get feedback from lots of ppl thanks!
Also, if you want to read my more regular update comments and discussion consider joining the spaceexpedition group on our discord server. That might be a better place to generate a discussion on a challenge list and get some suggetions from the alpha testers. If you are interested message me and I'll give you the link.

I think I agree with Lezandria, probably best to keep your eggs in one basket now.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
ok, well I feel like it is not the place to post super technical changelogs, but I guess i got discord for that :P.

Hi-
As you can probablly tell from my username, I'm SnapshotDesign from the curse post.
I have some good ideas for quests
Find all alien tomes
scan 1 mob
scan 5 mobs
scan 10 mobs
scan 20 mobs
scan 30 mobs
scan all mobs
make all the tech items
make the glider
upgrade to the jetpack
a completed quest for each year you make it through
upgrade your biosuit to full armor protection
get the night vision
get the augmented limbs
beat each boss
Also add a reward system so you get materials for the quests you complete
and ItemBound is a special resource pack that works with Optifine and applies custom textures to items when you give them a certain name and an enchantment.
Found a Typo: the "then" in the Jungle Longbow's description should be "than". I know that that's super knitpicky, but you want the map to be as good as possible.

Hope these are more to your liking!

I can definitely make a good challenge list!
"this device is not able to capture all mobs, only the unevolved (vanilla) creatures" or something like that?
just to make it clearer for the player.
