Last time I checked MTG had ~6 million while hearthstone had ~20 million, although my sources are not 100% reliable maybe.
MtG has also been the best selling card game in the world for over 20 years, invented an entirely new genre in which most games still try to blindly copy its brilliant design, and spawned several sub-genres of board games (see: Dominion and 7 Wonders). Unfortunately WotC doesn't release sales numbers, but I found a source saying 12 million active players with consistent growth each year.
Hearthstone hasn't even been out a year, and so its number of players is likely inflated as people try it out and figure out it they like it. Once it reaches a steady state where it doesn't have the "shiny new thing" feeling then we can have an accurate comparison. I do absolutely agree though that Hearthstone is easier to get into, primarily because it's free-to-play, although that brings its own set of issues.

A whimsical romp through the CtM genre. Most times visually stunning, although there are some obvious brush strokes and spheres in between major areas. From a progression perspective, it's recommended to take the branches in linear fashion, and much food and gear available is to you in the monument room. Unfortunately, the spawn area has a very attractive wall that leads directly to the final area and overpowered gear. The monument materials are unique, and has some clever visual effects.
It is.
MtG (at its peak) may have had more players than HS, but HS is currently more 'popular' meaning mainstream.
I found a source citing a player base of 12 million for MtG back in 2011. The source also says that number was double what it was in 2008, and the increase in size of the game showed no signs of decelerating. Meanwhile, Hearthstone (according to Wikipedia) had about 20 million registered users back in September 2014. Extrapolating from the numbers for Magic, factoring in the fact that Hearthstone has probably grown, and acknowledging the fact that not all of Hearthstone's registered users actually play the game... I'd say they're approximately equal.

I could never ever consider Hearthstone "more popular" than MtG. Magic has a 20 year history and millions upon millions of players have played the game over this time. I have trouble even believing Hearthstone has hit the same number of overall people that have played Magic, especially considering its reach.
It may have more active players at one time, but Magic's easily got it beat on players having played.
There's also the fact that Magic has 12 million active players, whereas Hearthstone has 20 million accounts. Considering retention rates for ftp games, even exceptional ones, a large chunk of those are likely people who logged on, tried it for half an hour, and then never played it again.

Awesome, I'm getting in on this Magic the gathering and Hearthstone conversation.
Before I get into more of the specifics regarding the two, I will point out that Hearthstone has been one of the best and closest to the magic the gathering feeling I've been seeking that's been a free program. For quite a long time, I've been seeking a PC experience that gave me that same feeling that I experienced while playing Magic the Gathering competitively. Out of the many of games that I've experiences, Hearthstone has been the closest to that feeling and has been quite enjoyable.
That said, I feel that Hearthstone, while good, still does not achieve that same level of enjoyment that you will experience while playing MtG. There remains a small hand full of caveats that I find to be problematic for me.
1) A lack of ability to make interactions with the opposing player on their turn or in response to situations, I.E. Instant spells. This gives the game more of a board game feel instead of a card game feel.
2) Lack of card variety and infrequency of updates. Of course, this is something that only time can resolve as MtG has been out a hell of a lot longer and has a much larger variety of cards. However, because of this, you can usually guess as to what deck you'll be playing against when you see a class.
3) Class locked cards and inability to multi-class. While magic may have a similarity with having color specific cards, you're still allowed to create multi-colored decks that allow for more diversity. While I know that the chances of this ever happening are quite slim as WoW itself doesn't allow it and it's based of that, it would allow for players to get more creative and broaden the horizon of deck creation and deck diversity.
4) Not enough means of getting gold. Although Hearthstone does offer you the ability to play the game without ever having to pay, the grind that is required to get the cards necessary for a deck is very painstaking and long. Aside from the one quest you earn each day, that caps at a max of 3 you can hold on to, there's not enough means of acquiring gold. This means you just need to grind away at playing and hope to win. At 10 gold per 3 wins, you're required to win 30 games in order to buy one pack of cards. Even at 30 wins required though, you'll most likely play more games than that to get to your 30 wins. 30+ games if you do really well, 60+ if you have a 50-50 win ration or less.
4) No ability to trade or buy individual cards with gold or money. One of the nicest things about Magic is the ease of being able to trade with other people for cards you may need or purchase cards straight up without having to continue just buying booster packs and hoping to get what you want. While Hearthstone does allow you to purchase cards with dust, the means of getting that dust is equally as painstaking as getting gold. Personally, I find there needs to be an easier means of getting cards, such as buy cards with gold or money or even just allowing players to trade with other players.
Even with all of that said, I feel that there are some redeeming factor of Hearthstone, such as how accessible it is to new players, how you are not required to memorize all the rules as it's all handled automatically or can be told to very quickly and how much charm the game has through it's sound, animations and effects.
So how does Hearthstone compare up against Magic the Gathering? Not even close. While with time Hearthstone can become even better and better, it still has many issues to resolve before it can stand up to the titan of MtG and actually hold some competition. Also, the argument of "12 million active MtG players vs 20 million Hearthstone accounts" is a pretty moot comparison as that's accounts and not active account. I personally know a handful of people who have accounts and stopped playing very quickly after they started so it's quite easy to say that that number is far far lower than 20 million.
Oh. And as this is a CTM thread. Ummmm. Any new maps coming out soon that I should look forward to for my Monumental Victory LP?
Any idea why dozens of squids spawn in my lavafalls every other second?
-snip-
Well the short answer is you have angered the octopus gods and now they have opened the gates of SquidHell and released the mighty Lavasquigddes and Pain Squids and Magical Flying Fire Squids to wreak havoc on your world.

I know Depths of Irkalla might come out of beta soonish, probably by the tme you finish RC2 if not a bit after that. other than that, don't you still have a fair bit of maps on your docs sheet thing?

I have more maps on my list of maps, so I'm not too worried about not having anything.

And Moldly's a great mapmaker, so it should be checked out!
@Infinity Does anyone know of a vine filter or some other way to easily add vines or blocks in a vine-like manner for 1.8?
So I use the stalactite filter for mcedit, but I have no idea where I got it from. I just know its called stalactite py...
(Also I don't know if it will work with actual vines, I just use it for leaves.)
That could be the one that I made... if anyone wants it (or the WorldEdit craftscript that I made for the same purpose), I'd be happy to provide it. And I have no idea if it works for vines, but I could probably make a modification to it...

I can confirm that at least one person did this.
Seconded. Haven't logged on since before the first expansion thingy.
