I suck at block variation for sure - Any block patterns there that people like? I personally like 3 and 5... I'm going for a stone-ish area... (Monument area actually) - And I don't want to update to 1.8 snapshots so no I'm not using Andersite, etc. D:
I'd prefer that you'd actually make the area and then ask for feedback because it would be easier to give you feedback on that, but from these I'd say some good ones are:3,5,7-9.
I've been taking a look at those filters, and they make about as much sense to me as Kamyu's stuff did. I'll try my hand at them again, though, thanks for your recommendations.
As for the suggested maps, I'll take a look at all of them, I don't have anything better to do anyway. I'll give your map a try as well, even if it might be a bit hard :-P

Also with the create geared mobs filter, You won't be able to create custom spiders, creepers or anything that's not undead. You will have to go into the Nbt data and manually change the mob to a spider or creeper, Which isn't to hard.
Q: When it comes to mapmaking, how much time and effort do you put in? Do you use that time to carefully manage your ideas? And when is the right time to work on your projects?

Usually I build something for few hours and then I'm bored and later I start new map because I didn't like last one.

Personally, the time and effort that I've been putting into different stages of area creation has dramatically changed since I began making my map.
When I first started creation of the map, I spent a ton of time planning every little detail about every area, but when actually making them I didn't put nearly as much effort into them as I do now. Interestingly enough, I now spend much less time planning areas than I used to. Nowadays, I'll usually come up with the general concept for an area and then jump straight into building it. And to be honest, I think that's working better for me. When I make very strict plans, I end up limiting my own opportunities to make an area as good as it can be.
As far as the right time to work on projects, I just work on maps when I feel like it. Sometimes I'll work steadily a few hours a day for a few weeks in a row, sometimes I'll have a huge blowout where I spend 8-10 hours mapmaking in one day (yeah, I know, it's unhealthy), and other times I'll go for over a month without working on anything at all.
And on a slightly unrelated note... I'm off to create my black wool area. Wish me luck.

I make strict plans, and then purposely break them massively. It works wonders, I must say.

Something to remember when learning to use a new tool is that it's like learning a new language: it's not all going to make sense when you start, and some stuff won't ever make sense, but the more you work with it, the more it'll make sense.
Well, this thread is quiet. So... Community Question!Q: When it comes to mapmaking, how much time and effort do you put in? Do you use that time to carefully manage your ideas? And when is the right time to work on your projects?
I like to think I put a lot of effort in, but I spread that effort over a long stretch of time (as shown by the fact that Dreadsky Depths has been in production for almost a year now.) I'm more on the cautious side, less inclined to take risks when I don't need to, and quick to undo something I've done if it doesn't look quite right. The right time to work is when I'm inspired or when I've got a visually creative mindset. I say "visually creative" because another passtime of mine is writing, and when I'm inspired to write, that's a different form of inspiration than inspiration for mapmaking.

This is how To Greener Pastures worked out for me, I was extremely rigid about what I wanted to do with the map in the first intersection and then past that I began to just make areas based off a theme or an idea which seemed to work out alright. Then again TGP is a mediocre map at best.
Also hai.
I now have made a splash potion that when used builds a house around you, Complete with a furnace, crafting table, anvil, and an enchantment table that has level 30s. This is something that I would give out in my map once in the last intersection. Something like this would be great in a very large chaos filled area like the black wool in inferno mines. I still need to add some stuff to it, Like I want it to spawn with some chests that have some food, wood, potions, and a bit of lapis.

Hello everybody! So I know a lot of people here aren't exactly a... "fan" of me, but I'd just like to pop in to say that there's an event being hosted on my CTM server, in which everyone who signs up for the event gets to work on one big area for the upcoming map "Septum Immoriel" by Fangride. We've set it up so that it starts on March the 8th, and (hopefully) ends on March the 15th. VoxelSniper and WorldEdit will be installed, and Fangride will provide plans and initial details in a Minecraft Forum Private Message. So, if anyone's interested in joining, quote this comment and provide in the comment, your Minecraft Username so that I can add you to the white list.

ok this actually sounds really useful and cool

I'm calling blasphemy on this. Can we get a court ruling on this? I vote we drown Karrot at the stake.
Doesn't that require a use of command block spam?
