COMMUNITY QUESTION (For mapmakers):
How do you combat the "rush in, grab the wool, and get out" strategy? Do you even try?
No no no no no, no, no... no... no...... no, NO! You're doing it all wrong! You need to do something more like... THIS!
COMMUNITY QUESTION TIME!!!*Wheel of Fortune-like tune plays in the background*
Yeah, I have run into the same problem in almost every area, which makes the map super unbalanced. I would love someone if they told me how to fix it without changing the entire area.

I have that problem with a black wool area. I'm probably going to have to redo the entire thing leading up to it just so players can't use ender pearls and destroy the purpose of the last area.
Easy: No spawn delay on spawners initially, and things players need to break or do to progress.
Well the thing about "no spawn delay" is that it can also completely overwhelm the player who's trying to do the area "legit". But, that's probably still a good solution.
Also, I've added some redstone torches as ambient lighting... Better?

What I do, is not have my areas just huge caves that you speed run on. In terms on black wool, I think just a big area, with exploration and chaos. (Sort of like Eternal Battle, but executed better.)When I saw the way Vechs did the area, it was creative the way it was thought out.
And in other news, I can actually start building tomorrow (getting home from vacation) so I can actually fix the ugly spaceships. >.<
Heres what I would do: Download and install SPC (It comes with a free world edit!). Download and Install InHaze's Build Commands. Then use the erode tool.
If you're using MCedit for this, then I guess just use the erode tool.
Lol, yeah, I knew that, just needed some help pointing out where to erode, just eroded the entire thing though... again... with a strength 3 erode brush.
So I recently did some upgrades to the intersection I showcased earlier... I know the walls are still "bland" as ever. But once I feel comfortable enough to move away from mapping in 1.5.2, I will replace the sand with a coloured clay.
EDIT: Nobody will notice the fact that the font in my banner has changed. :3

This Set of screenshots got me hyped for your map by showing me what you can do, well done. (Dont hate but the walls do need some erosion other than that they look great)

I'd say dont change it at all, although thats just a players perspective. I've really never seen lava "drips" and stuff for an intersection and the walls look fine to me but if you wanna change stuff go ahead!
I usually fly around my map, working on whatever I like. A bit of landscaping in an area, some tests in my test world, place some spawners, design new enemies, design loot etc. All together so it won't get boring
I usually work progressively. I work on sections until the aesthetics are done, then move into the next chunk. Often I do end up going back later, but for the initial building, that's what occurs. Afte the full aesthetics for the original draft is done, I walk through and tweak/add more, then work on loot and spawner design. Redstone and contraptions occur with the building.
Sometimes order changes up a bit here and there, with some loot and basic default spawners getting adde early, but as I shift over to fully custom mobs by-and-large it happens less.

Make the torches one block in the ground and use unupdated snowlayers to cover the torches on the ground, the ceiling is fine though. Looks good!

And I also finished that machine I mentioned earlier:
Looks really cool but... Why is there a modern crane with a 200 year old ship next to each other?
What I'm asking myself right now.
Just because it's wooden doesn't mean it's old. :/
Well, I mean the style is old. It looks like a ship from the 1700s of something.
The shape is not that of a modern ship.
Isn't that what all game shows do? Have super-flashy lights and screens everywhere?

I go and make [redacted] areas, one-by-one, then I find out most the areas in the map are a piece of [redacted], so I go and redo them to be angelic.
In other words, I like working on all in an area, one area at a time.
