Crazy Cat I have to say that watching your video made me cringe. (A) you killed your only solid light source. (the netherrack) (B) you invested valuable time in building a house when you needed to focus on food (and following the mob sounds.... to find out what was going on...) and (C) you wasted your MOST valuable resource........ to gather stone? ..... to make doors??? .... to decorate your home????????????
The TNT is the only block you are ever going to see. You can't get sand in this game. I've been at it for nearly a month, and I've only seen sand once, in 1.3.2 when I just happened to dig under a beach. That one block could have cleared hundreds of silverfish.... when you find that area you'll wish you had it.
The Wood is so scarce at the beginning that making doors out of wood.... wow... you are going to regret that decision.
The fence posts --- the first time, when you picked one up, decided it was worthless and placed it down under some rock I was like "WHAT!!!!!!" You will need those to keep the zombies / creepers / spiders / skeletons away from your house. They become super-valuable as a blocker when you're on the run from multiple mobs. Speaking of which....
Mob Spawners are super plentiful here. In fact, as you already know, there are 2 right by your spawn point.... and all that time you spent building your house RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO A SPAWNER.... meant that the zombies were spawning, and spawning and spawning.... while you were building.
When you ended your video with "Wellguysthat'sitforthistime.Ihopeyouhadfun,IGOTTAGO--GOODBYEGUYS!!!!" as the zombies you allowed to spawn came creeping after you.... yeah, funniest moment in the whole video. I replayed the ending 5 times just to hear the terror in your voice again. EPIC.
How far did you make it ---- you are one of the few I really do want to follow. And please.... don't edit out your deaths. I'm sure they'll be great viewing.
(NOTE: I am not being sarcastic, though I am sure it could be read that way. You stated up front in your video that you don't normally play Hard Mode.... trust me, that changes a lot in respect to game-play and you are definitely learning that. Take my words as notes of caution for the future.... and I honestly do hope that this scenario gives you an opportunity to grow as a player.)
And now, for today's episode of HOME IMPROVEMENT...... (with total thanks to PureSp1r1t for cluing me in that chests stack. 2 years playing Minecraft..... and I never knew that.)
Is your home cluttered, messy, or just generally a total eyesore? Do the neighboring villages give you dirty looks when you invite them over for a fish & potatoes dinner? Has your home been listed as one of the "10 next places to demolish" by the city planning committee?
Now, with just the slightest bit of effort, you can have a home to impress the neighbors (well..... assuming the neighbors aren't zombies that is.... those guys are just so naturally messy... I mean, com'on.... they carry around RAW Potatoes... what gives with that?) and keep the City Planner's from destroying your domicile.
I also finally got the time to reposition Charon to a more center-of-the-room area and cleaned up my workbench area. But this really is all thanks to Pure Spirit. I honestly thought I had to stagger my chests to get them to stack. I thought that was the only way to do it. For the record --- All Chests were found naturally in the game. I have not built one single chest for any of my ELEVEN homes / work / camping spaces. All in All I think I have something like nearly 90 chests so far.
You learn something new every day.
Tune in Next time to Home Improvement when we learn that giving a zombie a high five..... isn't really a good idea.
What? There's tons of sand just lying around very close to mine (and probably your) base!
This is a true statement. A lot of players have told me sand seems super rare but you have to remember that it won't spawn naturally deep underground. Remember this underground is twice the depth of a normal one and there are many "layers" and "zones" to the geology because I customized the generation of all the terrain features. You should explore all of them to get an idea of where things are commonly found. I'm surprised to hear you have found lots of sand though Espy...I don't remember seeing you do any intensive mining at anything other than base level. Did you edit those out off-camera?
CrazyCat! Welcome to the minecraftforums! Don't discourage him BethelAbba, like you said he's not played hardcore before. I met him on the planetminecraft and his episode 2 is actually out as of last night if you want to navigate to his channel. This time he dealt with both spawners (though died a few times in the process). Keep it up! Seeing vids of different playstyles is always interesting and it seems you are a builder. Can't wait to see what all you build in the deep underground!
Speaking of solid light sources I've seen some players get really creative with the limited light situation in the beginning. I personally carried the flares around and kept 1 torch on the hotbar for nerfing the rates from spawners as I cleared them. However, some players moved the netherrack around as it gives off good light. Others actually ran around in the dark with the brightness up high (I can't do this bc my mac has brightness issues).
I ended up finding some french videos recently and was interested in the variety of ways they tackled the beginning:
These guys used shaders which apparently light up the area when you carry torches which is pretty cool I must say. Not sure what's going on in the beginning, but my guess is they forgot to enable command blocks before starting on their server. The auto-start doesn't work until they jump-cut forward:
And then there are these guys which by far have the most creative and effective method I've seen:
yeah...they literally carry around flint and steel and light up the ground as they explore
James! Loved the vid as usual! he's getting to some major spoilers though so if you want to be surprised and figure out the ending for your own just be aware of that.

I think this was a little bit harsh...Everyone has their own ways of playing, and this is a very different way of playing minecraft, which he may well not have realised.
I wasn't trying to be harsh, and I even said so at the bottom in the NOTE. I just happened to notice so many things during his play through that should have been handled differently / more effectively / better and I thought it should be pointed out to him. Play style is one thing --- mistakes.... that's a whole other ballgame. I would rather someone show me my mistakes so that I might learn from them (as I have even pointed out to you directly in my last comment about home improvement --- I learned something from your video that I never knew about in Minecraft, and I've been at this 2 years now) .... so that I might play the game more effectively. I assume that other players carry at least a modicum of that same attitude.
Yet..... even wth all that said.... if it was taken harshly, that wasn't my intent, and I did work on my comment for quite some time (almost 30 minutes) before I hit "Post Reply" in the hopes that what I said would be taken constructively. If it wasn't --- then I do apologize to CrazyCat.... but I would like to hear from him first in this respect.
What? There's tons of sand just lying around very close to mine (and probably your) base!
If you are referring to the Witch Hut, well.... there's not TONS, there's just a bit. 30 - 40 pieces at most.
If you're referring to tunneling up and grabbing whatever you can before drowning.... that's a long, lengthy, time consuming method that seems to have little return.
If you are talking about a hidden area of massive quantities of sand --- I'm still looking around.... but I would love a picture to see if you have one.
The only sand I have seen underground is the few pieces at the Witch hut, and though I took some of it (18-30 pieces I think) I left most of it and turned it into a chicken coop.
Because you're limited to level 128.... your ability to scout sand is likewise limited..... unless..... are you using..... Amidst?!?!?!?
I haven't turned to that avenue yet because I wanted to see what I could do without the use of a mapping program.
To be honest, I haven't even turned to it to scout out the Strongholds --- Yes, Dan, that's why I haven't been there yet, cause I am still digging around looking to see what's out there without peeking at my Amidst.... like you said, I play hardcore AS HARDCORE.... even fishing for leather sometimes if need be. (I have a wonderful Mesa world I played wherein I did fish for enough leather to deck out 21 full bookshelves. Took me 3 weeks.... but was ultimately satisfying when it was finished.)
In any case --- clue a guy in on what you're thinking, without giving too much away that is. You have piqued my curiousity.

(C) --- I wasn't trying to be discouraging... but I've already addressed that. Looking forward to Crazycat's second video --- and I said that up front in the original comment I made.
In any case --- clue a guy in on what you're thinking, without giving too much away that is. You have piqued my curiousity.
Nah, you don't need amidst. Remember the traditional and intended way to find strongholds was navigating using eyes of ender to get your bearing. That's how everyone has done it so far that's found it. The stronghold is quite far away.
As for sand: You can do your own tests but here's what it looked like to me
it is under the bedrock in desert biomes in vast quantities just because of the way the map generates. Like I said there is strata in the way the game generates. Certain minerals can only be found at higher depths, sand is commonly found under rivers, oceans, and beaches and some of it made it just below the bedrock as it can spawn quite deep. You can, but shouldn't need to go swimming for it in these cases and I presume that's how EspyFudge found it. I personally found several pockets of sand that had fallen just under the bedrock in the generation with just 20 minutes of exploratory mining at that level. I have no idea what all can be found there just under the bedrock, but I can say I've never found a tree or an animal. The way I did the generation everything lower than 128 floods because I cranked up ocean and river levels. This prevents animals and plants from getting down where the bedrock generates, however, it doesn't grass apparently. I realized even if I'd not given grass to players they could've grabbed it with some swimming and a silk-touch pick. It's pretty common underwater in newly loaded areas due to the fact that the game doesn't recognize the new ocean level when generating grass blocks. They die quickly underwater though so you'd have to be fast to get it.
By the way! Loved the home improvement installment. That was pretty cool! That is an insane amount of chests, but I'm not surprised given just how many dungeons/mineshafts there are if you explore far enough. Good job!

I'm really enjoying this map! I'd appreciate if any of you could give me some constructive ANY Criticism.(Except for increasing the In-Game Brightness more, I know that...)

I love how you do your progress reports Sphuhne! hehe, glad your second attempt turned out better. So are you friends not coming back now that they've died? That's sad, the underground can get lonely, I'd recommend letting them come back, but it's your game I guess. Great work though! I am looking forward to reading more of your updates!
Welcome to the thread TangledLion! I must say I very much enjoyed your video. The intro and the role-playing is very fun to watch. Just make sure you continue to make good progress as well as you have many hours of content to cover. I'm not telling you at what pace to do your videos, just letting you know so you can decide. If you continue Cave-In at your current pace and dialogue the map will take dozens of episodes to complete. The thread is getting long with pinned videos but I'm thinking of adding a spoiler with a list of more videos for those that want to see who's done Let's Plays. I think you've earned yourself a spot there, your take on the map is very unique in my opinion.
You asked for feedback on the video and playstyle, here's some:
- Eat your rotten flesh multiple pieces at a time. You can only get a max of 30 seconds hunger from it so eating 3-4 at once will give you better saturation (make it last longer). Also, when hunger is active, don't mine, sprint, or fight as it multiplies your food usage over this period and can end up draining your hunger bar more than you started!
- Carry those redstone torches around! It'll help a lot with brightness if you have a torch you move around with you as you explore. There are many ways players have dealt with the darkness, I'm interested to see how you do on your search for coal.
- Don't beat zombies with your fists ever if possible! Zombies that are attacked attract all the ones around for miles. You'll get swarmed and overwhelmed if you don't have a weapon as you discovered.
- Lag will make it hard to have effective combat, but you are in luck! Cave-In is probably the least demanding map out there and I'm serious. You're underground. You can't see more than 16 blocks usually. Turn your render way down, like to 4 chunks. It should help a lot and you won't ever need more than that for the most part until you go to the nether. I noticed you have shaders also which tends to introduce a lot of lag, you could try playing without it as there isn't much to render underground. Your choice. It makes fire look pretty though.
- For your story: The way I wrote it the ruined mineshaft you find yourself in is a collapsed portion of the mineshaft the villagers were building underneath the bedrock before the cave-in. It fell with you and that's why I made it look ruined and wrecked. Any mineshafts you find are supposed to be pieces of the villager mining company operation that collapsed and fell with you so you could add that to your story. In fact, you'll even find company property and mining supplies around to add to the story. It's a good map to role-play.
Have fun! Lookign forward to seeing more, and thanks for contributing! I can tell you put a lot of hard work into this with your extra intro and everything. That was very cool!

Thanks! I Just recorded Episode 2, and It should be up sometime tomorrow! I Tried to follow some of your advise, And made some definite progress. Completing 3 challenges and finding 2 lore books.
I'm glad you are looking forward to more, because I'm looking forward to doing more!
Took a break for the weekend and went back to my roots ---- 1 Tree Island survival. Only this time I challenged myself to take on a no-tree island with a survival chest.
Two full days of "can I make it".... and thus far, it's been a blast!!!
I'll be back to Cave-In on Tuesday.... and I do look forward to it... but right now.... BRING ON THE PAIN!!!!
(on a more serious note..... I needed the sunshine.... 30 days underground makes jack a dull boy.... makes jack a dull boy..... makes jack a dull boy... and seems to foster a whole lotta writer's block apparently....)
lol, it seems everyone chipped in to give Lion some advice about the lag. Hopefully you get it sorted man! Your videos will be waaay better if you can fix that problem. I still enjoyed your first one though just because I could tell you were really getting into the story! I love stories, that's why I always hide them in my maps.
Bethel! Your challenge island sounds painful, I'm glad you like it though! Technically, you can go forever without trees now in 1.8. You just need to create enough spawning space underground to get witches and steal their sticks! That is, if all you care about is continuing to have tools. I guess that's all you'd need for subsistence.
Killer: Balancing cave-in with normal survival sounds like a good idea! I personally didn't tire of it but I also knew where everything was so I kinda flew threw all the areas in my test. Never got monotonous because of that! Don't worry about snow, that problem should sort itself if you focus on the rest of the challenge list. Tiers 1-3, 5 work together, but Tier 4 is just miscellaneous side challenges, not meant to be done completely before you start on Tier 5. Excited for your monday videos!
Spirit, I'm fine with you doing advertising here as long as it is reasonable, but yeah, for the most part keep the videos and discussion to Cave-In just so the journal stays interesting and focused. I've actually already discovered your new series and have watched the first 2! Did you not see my comment?

Thanks for the lag advise guys, But it won't have any effect until Episode three unfortunately. Also, sorry this is late, I was gone most of the day yesterday and it was SUPPOSED to upload while I was gone, But the upload just Broke, So I had to do it last night.Oh and As for the thing where you can hear my keyboard and mouse, I think it's due to the equipment I have, It's not the best but it gets the job done...
Huh, How did it glitch out? I'm familiar with YouTube BB Tags, And I thought I did it right, turns out it's because i typed it in a hurry and forgot to disable the natural hyperlink, a problem I never had on other sites...
Anyhoo, it's fixed, thanks for letting me know about it!
It's a great day for Dan, an episode from PureSp1r1t and one from me aswel!

Well my next episode is out! Some more exploring today, but not close to home! This time, a couple thousand blocks away!
Spirit ---- 17:32 ---- there seems to be a THIRD mob spawner at that point in the video if you look. The Cobble extends past where the corner would normally be... not sure, but I am thinking you found an excellent area for a grinder.... too bad it's 3000 blocks from home.
No-Tree Island Survival finale ------ 40 diamonds, 300+ iron, and ....... 500+ chunks of wood!!!!!
For not having a tree I sure made out like a bandit. (I managed to find 5 different mineshafts.) Only found one (1... uno.... einz... 一) mob spawner (a useless zombie spawner). But I managed a garden of 4 crops, fished 4 books and made a humorous carnival ride out of all the minecarts I discovered.)
Oh, and I put myself on a unique limitation. No chests unless I found them. that certainly made for an interesting game of "What to Keep" as you will see in my next set of pictures from Cave-In.
And.... I'm.... Off.... to see what I can discover next in the underground world of Cave-In.

Nice! Quite the accomplishment starting with just one bonus chest! I might have to try this. Welcome back BethelAbba!

Hey Dan, I have a question. I was wanting to add some command block powered custom recipes to my playthrough. But I wanted to make sure they weren't Game-braking/redundant first, So I have them in this spoiler below, I'd appreciate if you approved my use of them.
(Also, this requires a Renamed dispenser to make, so i will have to make an anvil first, and any crafting matirials I make up Will have looting on them so as to avoid me just renaming the Base Item)
Input: Stick, Wool Output: 4 string, stick
Input: string, Iron, Paper Output: Name Tag
Input: Mossy Cobble Output: Cobblestone, 3 Moss(Special green Dye) (*Can Be Reversed)

I'd appreciate if any of you could give me
some constructiveANY Criticism.(Except for increasing the In-Game Brightness more, I know that...)I love how you do your progress reports Sphuhne! hehe, glad your second attempt turned out better.

Anyway here is the video itself:
Huh, How did it glitch out? I'm familiar with YouTube BB Tags, And I thought I did it right, turns out it's because i typed it in a hurry and forgot to disable the natural hyperlink, a problem I never had on other sites...
Anyhoo, it's fixed, thanks for letting me know about it!
sweet! And a final battleground from James! Monday is the best! Well I'll get to these tonight when I get back home, excited from the title of yours Espy!

I noticed the cobble corner too, I think you might be right about the 3rd spawner...

Thanks in advance for considering!
