No, I tried but there is an existing bug where witch huts don't work on a flatland world. It has been reported to Mojang.
A normal mob spawner should give you a small amount of witches, however. And later on, you can get more glowstone, glass, and redstone via villager trading.
Can't wait to get home and download this for a weekend of solo survival. From the videos and comments on this thread I can already tell it's going to be great!
Thanks for updating and posting this MegaTrain! It's been a while (a LONG while) since I've been on MC and I was happy to see that someone had done something with this map since this one, along with the awesome Ocean Block are 2 of my very favorite survival maps. Downloading it now! =^-^=

I've just read through everything in this thread, to see if I would be duplicating anything by mentioning one thing my friend and I just discovered about the mooshrooms. Evidently not.
I want to say, first, that this map is working GREAT in 1.8. The only problem we've had, so far, is with the mooshrooms. As of snapshot 14w26a, mooshrooms MUST have mycelium on which to spawn. I was trying to think back, but I don't THINK you gave us any mycelium. If you did, I probably mined it and got dirt. For my purposes, right now, I plan to go into Creative to get a block of mycelium, with which to spread it around my mushroom island.
Yes...I used NBT Explorer to turn on commands. I have a height problem. It doesn't matter to my brain (and my blood pressure) that this is just a game and that I can respawn if I fall off the edge...sigh. I have a tendency to get nauseous, light-headed, and very anxious, in tight situations, using the sneak key. Also, I have a very short little finger that is very sore these days, due to your map! (grin) I've managed to do everything except the second block in the nether without being in Creative. Even in Creative I've done my best to actually do the work--including using the sneak key. I just need the assurance that I COULD fly, if I fall, so that I don't have to not play the map at all...sigh.
I may start the whole thing over again at some point (I usually do, when doing challenge maps, after learning more about them). In that case, I'll be sure to not ruin the mycelium, if there is actually some, and if it's somewhere that I should have known to let it spread.
My friend and I and her husband are both having a great time with this map--having recently completed Skyblock 2.1 (not multiplayer--just two friends sharing our singleplayer results with each other). As of 1.8, we were NOT able to get animals (even squid) to spawn on 2.1, but we've had good success with your map. Thank you!
By the way--I'm a nearly-65-year-old grandma who has to stay out ahead of her grandchildren with this game! I only downloaded Skyblock 2.1 because the kids wanted to play it when they're here, then my friend found your map and we were off and running...well...crouching... Thanks very much for such a fun, updated challenge!

Thanks, Florophase! Now I'll HAVE to start over at some point. ;-) In the meantime, I'm just having a blast isolating all the different biomes and putting my trees in the right places, and spawning things like crazy. I need to start using the leather and wool I've been stashing away. Also need to set up a sniping field so I can watch for zombie villagers. My mob grinder works great for loot, but it gets too crowded to look for specific zombies as I'm slashing away at the feet of all the monsters.
I do have both carrots and potatoes, now, and have gotten three iron ingots. The witches are slowly, slowly giving me redstone. I figure all the challenges may take me a couple of months, but I'm really enjoying the general concept of the map, so am not worried about how long it might take.
Regarding that mycelium--Mega Train--when you update, you'll want to change the statement about spawning mooshrooms on grass blocks instead of mycelium, because that can no longer be done.

I didn't know that had changed in the snapshots, I will definitely test that before I release my 1.8 version! Thank you for letting me know!
There are actually two sources of mycelium on the map: 2 blocks in the Nether that had the original 2 mushrooms (I couldn't place them down on glowstone like the original map). To pick this mycelium up, you'd need silk touch, but even if you accidentally dig these up, there is a second source. I'm going to put this into a spoiler tag, as you might not have encountered it yet:
After you've gone to the end and beat the Enderdragon, there is a chest that contains all sorts of interesting things. (Ever wonder where to get the diamond to make your enchantment table?) That chest may contain some mycelium, along with some other useful blocks.
I'm so glad you've been enjoying the map!
If you or anyone else has noticed issues playing this in 1.8, please let me know! I'm going to be testing the map myself, and should be releasing a 1.8 version after testing is complete (no ETA yet).
Wish you'd remake some other classic survival maps! I love the ones with limited resources/space. Thanks again for your hard work, MegaTrain! Love the vids as well!

Now now, let MegaTrain finish updating for 1.8. Then he can start remaking old survival maps.
Seriously, though, your work on this is really appreciated MegaTrain!
I am working on the 1.8 map, but unfortunately ran into a problem! One of the major features I hoped to include was a section of DEEP OCEAN biome that would otherwise contain an Ocean Monument that spawns guardians, which would allow you to get all the new prismarine blocks (see them all here).
Unfortunately, it looks like there is a bug where guardians do not spawn on superflat worlds, even when the monument location is properly defined. This is actually very similar to the Witch Hut bug I described a while ago, they may in fact be related.
Any opinion about this? Is this a big deal? Should I put it in as a bonus objective, only achievable if they fix the bug?
Anything else specific you are looking for in the 1.8 version? (Besides a slight revision to objectives, based on the changes to trades and enchanting).
For me personally, bonus objective is fine. I'm just looking forward to yet another reason to repeat the map. Ha! Looking forward to it and thanks for your the time and effort you are spending on this. The only issue I've had so far in the current version is an inability to spawn any slimes in my slime biome area.

Yeah, I'd say optional objective is fine, since you don't need prismarine for anything mandatory. Even the witch bug isn't that big a deal since there are ways to get their drops & (slowly) farm iron bars.

Hey, MegaTrain!
Wouldn't it be possible to generate a normal world and edit the witch huts and ocean monuments to place them in another location. After that you could delete a big square of the map and center the skyblock in the middle of this square. And last to prevent people from reaching the "normal land" you could place barrier blocks around the square or place them so that you are not even able to see the normal land. i don't know if it's possible, what do you think about it?
