While this map is no longer being actively updated, others have taken the reins to update the map to add things only available in new versions past 1.5. See the bottom of this post for links!
No lava.
No stone.
Just you, some trees, and a couple friends.
Skyblock is a wonderful map, but this is NOT Skyblock, and is nothing like it. Play it for 20 minutes and you'll see.
CHANGELOG:
4.0 Initial release. You can pretty much make, breed, grow, spawn, or trade for everything in the game, eventually. If you're smart
4.1 Incremental Update to Minecraft 1.5. Added Quartz and more Soul Sand. Put most starting items in a chest. Increased biome sizes and replaced the Desert with a Mushroom biome. Modified the challenges to be much easier to mark completed. Moved the spawn point so slimes are easier to get. NOTE: This does not seem to have taken. I'll fix it again in 4.2, but for now follow the below instructions. TO FIX SLIME SPAWNING:
Download and install NBTExplorer if you don't already have it.
Open it and navigate to your SAVES folder (something like C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\saves)
Navigate into OceanBlock_4.0 -> Level.dat -> Data: 24 Entries -> SpawnX and SpawnZ
SpawnX should be 289. Change it to 250. If it is not 289, change it to a number near what it is but at least 25 away.
Leave SpawnY alone. It's a height value that doesn't matter here.
SpawnZ should already be 598. Change it to 550. If it is not 550, change it to a number near what is is but at least 25 away.
File -> Save
Exit out of NBTExplorer.
All done!
KNOWN BUGS:
Slimes (and sometimes passive mobs) won't spawn. Run the above fix if this occurs on your map. This will be fixed when I update to 4.2.
Zombie Pigmen sometimes won't spawn, or will spawn but only in very small numbers. Run the below fix for this. This will be fixed when I update to 4.2.
TO FIX ZOMBIE PIGMAN SPAWNING:
Open your map in MCEdit. If you are not comfortable with MCEdit, read up on it and make a backup of your map before using it!
Go to the Nether.
Highlight all "normal" looking areas. You'll have to do this step several times for each of the 4 areas North/South/East/West around the big lava lake.
Select the fill tool, and fill the area with bedrock. You'll have to do this step several times for each of the 4 areas North/South/East/West around the big lava lake.
Multiplayer server! (Thanks to BritishCommando2 for setting up and running this):
URL: oceanblock.us
Just paste that into Minecraft and head on over!
Alternate urls: oceanblock.me oceanblock.co oceanblock.in oceanblock.org
Once connected hit T, then type /server Oceanblock
Then read all the signs for what to do next!
Rules:
Do not kill yourself in ANY way for ANY purpose.
NO mods/hacks/cheats that give you an advantage. (Optifine is fine, but TMI is not)
Play on at least easy difficulty.
Have FUN!
Notes:
There is a bed on the island, and when you start it should be night. Sleep in the bed to set your spawn point, and sleep in it whenever you move it. This will keep you from spawning on the ocean floor, which is a Minecraft bug that I cannot fix.
When you start, there is no lava. There is no stone. You'll be working with wood until you can get iron tools, either from a mob trap or from Iron Golems, or from trading with villagers.
Most of the stuff you'll work with in on the little block of dirt, sand, and a few other resources that you spawn on. There are some goodies available if you search a bit, but don't look too far! *EVERYTHING* unique is within 16 horizontal meters of the bed in the center of the island.
There are 5 biomes in the world. Most of the world is a plains biome, but there is also a snow, a jungle, a swamp, and a mushroom biome. And like everything else of interest, they're all within 16 meters of that bed. They're also all placed symmetrically so if you can find one, you should be able to find the other 3.
There is an emergency cache on the non-hardcore version of this map. It's not exactly hidden but it's out of the way. It has a few critical resources that you start with, but could lose. For the ultimate challenge, try to do EVERYTHING below without ever opening that cache. If you don't like it but don't want to use its contents, feel free to destroy it and throw it and its contents into the sea or onto your cactus.
There is coal on this map. And diamonds. And obsidian. And all of the Nether blocks. And Nether Wart. Yes, you can get it all. And yes, you'll need it all.
Challenges:
MILESTONES (Do in REVERSE order):
Build a Village
Mine the Obsidian

FAQ:
How do I get cobblestone? Where's the Lava?
Until you get to the Nether, there IS NONE. This is not Skyblock, no matter how similar it appears on the surface.
Anything you can do with cobblestone, you can do with wood, except maybe holding lava. What about Iron?
Iron is a renewable resource, and getting it is one of your goals. If you do the challenges in order you'll get iron in no time. What about Whithers? I bet you didn't think about those.
You're right, I could have accounted for Withers but I didn't. Your map is dumb and you're dumb and how can you mine diamond without iron you dummy.
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but you'll need iron to mine diamonds.

Thanks, starting on it now
(though I'm not going to do so without mods. As soon as I get a full stack of each kind of sappling, plus a good food supply, I'm turning on TreeCapitator. It's not like it will make any difference afterwards anyway.)
Dang it! Not first Also, do you still not belive me that having a building at a higher coordinate affects growth times, spawn rates, etc? Check out JL2579's video on the spawning of mobs, "Advanced tutorial - How to build efficient mobfarms in minecraft" for the evidence!
It's not that I don't believe you, it's that I don't think it affects this particular map as much as a normal game.
I removed the bedrock so - if you really want - you can go up and remove the dispensers. I even say in the book included with the map that it's okay to do that.
I abandon 1.3 for your new map. I am so much more organized this time. Its just so hard deciding what is the most important thing to do first. I was very excited when a zombie dropped a potato. My biggest disappointment is that I only get one jungle tree at a time and they are often short but at least I am getting one each time. I never made it to the nether in 1.3 so hopefully I will gird up my courage for this new map. Oh and btw my ocean floor mining is so much better this time.
Love your mapI just noticed that I am the first one to follow this topic, that makes me your biggest fan
Best Survival map I have played so far, better than Skyblock! In this you can actually get every single block in the game and actually build really awesome structures! I am doin an LP on this and sent you a private message! If anyone else is reading my message and wants to check out my channel and the Ocean Block LP go here http://www.youtube.com/user/PixelyCraft
Thank you for reading.

I've been watching - and liking - your videos! I actually was going to ask how you recovered when that creeper blew up in episode 5. It looked like he killed your villagers. Did you restore from a backup, and if so did you then rebuild that area that is going to be your village, or are you like making backups continually? If so, I'd love to hear how you're doing it because man, I hate it when a creeper screws up my work
For the record if you put "oceanblock" in the title of your video and it's in English(and it's actually about this map), I *will* watch it, subscribe to you, and like the video. Usually all within a few hours of you posting it. If you don't speak English, I'll still click "Like" but I won't watch or subscribe. Sorry, but I have to keep my subscriptions list workable and I just can't watch what I don't understand.
It is titled Minecraft - Ocean Block [Ep #] and I do speak english
once again here you go for my channel and the lp (doing 4.0 when done 3.0) http://www.youtube.c...ser/pixelycraft
And for the creeper @ episode 5, I actually got spawn eggs from creative and rebuilt anything we lost in creative. In 4.0 we will not cheat so don't worry just didn't feel like rebuilding it :\
Have you used the new custom generation system for this map, so there is no mainland at all?
I have! And the Nether is boxed in in Bedrock (it works thematically because the nether is enclosed top-to-bottom, so enclosing it north/south/east/west is okay. Or so I tell myself)
The overworld you downloaded is literally 4 chunks, or 32x32 meters wide. No need to ever leave that boundary unless you need more of something you can find in excess nearby, or (obviously) to make your island larger.
=( Bugged water current of 1.4.3 pre killed both villagers in first 15 minutes.
Yikes! That sucks. Villagers tend to not like pre-releases very much. I would suggest either not playing them or backing up your world every time you play.
Awesome! Loved skyblock, since it was a challenge, but I know I'll like this too!
Splendid work. And I love the people who come up with marvellously challenging, yet still fun maps. They are really cool :).
Congratulations, I'm subscribing and downloading.
First thing I do, break cactus, then i break leaves, cut the tree down, expand the island and replant a saping.
And now I .......wait until the sapling grows.
First thing I do, break cactus, then i break leaves, cut the tree down, expand the island and replant a saping.
And now I .......wait until the sapling grows.
It seems like everybody does this.
Don't plant a sapling.
Plant EVERY SAPLING YOU HAVE. As soon as a tree grows, cut it down and do the same. You should have a dozen or more saplings going at ALL TIMES. You will have more trees than you can cut down!
5 saplings grows a single tree at LEAST 5 times faster than 1 sapling would.
I love this map, but I really hate the low drop of sapplings from jungle trees. Seems like I got a sapling from every other tree, cheating in a sapling each other time since I don't think pure chance should totally screw me If my sappling fell into the ocean, so it was my mistake I would have to live with it, but this is just silly I think.
Yeah Jungles are the worst. Until you get 4, it can be dodgy. Sadly I can't control how many drop. All I could do is add more leaves but that only helps you at the start, and it'd look funny if jungle leaves went up into the sky like a pillar.
I don't have as many sapling problems as many are reporting, I seem to pretty consistently get to 4 saplings to get a large tree (at which point saplings never become a problem again so long as you don't let them fall into the ocean). I haven't played in 1.4.3pre yet (and probably won't as it's coming out for real in a couple days). I'm wondering if the drop rate was lowered even further or something.
Got a bit of luck on the villager side though, 5th villager is a blacksmith with iron pickaxe! Gotta get some more villagers to sell items to though, since I can't afford it yet, and my "paper buyer" won't buy any more.
If you do his other trade (if it's possible), it should unlock the paper trade again. If he doesn't have another trade, then that's a Minecraft bug I've stumbled on before as well. If you get enough villagers, you'll get more paper trades. They're pretty common.
No lava.
No stone.

Get about 200 blocks of something. I like sand.
Look down.
Jump, and place a block under your feet.
Repeat step 3 199 more times.
Oh, and bring some food because all that jumping will eradicate your hunger bar.
