For your crimes (which are many), you have been banished into a series of Ages, to study virtue and return chastened.
This is a fairly quick little jaunt of adventure-mappery (I can speed-run it in about four minutes; others will likely need an hour or two for the first run), using Mystcraft. The rules:
Break and place blocks all you like, make the tools you can (heh), and so on. Anything vanilla minecraft survival does is a-okay. If you ruin your chances at progress by doing crazy stuff... Well. That can happen.
Benefits from other mods are probably "cheating", but that's your business.
Let's have some pics:
These are The Ways, to which you will likely return a few times...
This is Inferno, a stop you'll make...
Here's one of the trials of virtue...
.....
The Download - It's on Google Drive. Click "file" in the upper left, then "download". Unzip, throw into your saves folder, and play. Possibly keep the .rar, in case you totally fry it.
A note on death: Respawning can take a second while minecraft wraps it head around the weirdness of the maps, and "unspawns" placed enemies. This does mean that some Ages get a lot easier if you die in them, and this is deliberate. This isn't meant to be a slog-fest, just a light, quick runabout.
There is absolutely nothing. Zilch. Empty space as far as I can see. Let me check again.
[added] After dying and respawning several times, I am now standing on a sandy beach within a jungle. It's very nice. But I don't think it's the adventure map you constructed.
[editted again] I unzipped the map again, and am again falling into the Void. There is nothing above, below, or to any side of me.

Not even remotely, no... Grag.
Hopefully, someone else will be able to say if they're getting the same glitch, or no. If yes, it's something on my end - if no, it's something over yonder (not necessarily something wrong, just something interfering).
General note: I'm using the not-Forge Mystcraft. You?
Just finished it. It was a little easy, water from Cascade made the inferno quick to pass, though the magma cubes were annoying to split up and skeletal infighting took care of Verdant. I think it was a fun little time-waster. For about 30 minutes, anyhow.

That's pretty close to what I was aiming for - simple, fast, amusing.
It's likely I'll do something more extensive later on, but I wanted to see if I could make a fun little toy at all, first.
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
I re-downloaded Minecraft, Mystcraft, and the map file.
I suspect that previous experimentation with snapshots may have gotten mixed up with my backup .jar file - I thought I had restored to the original version, and had repeatedly forced updates, but... well, that's that. Peculiar - I'd never had any problems before.
It works fine now! Very nice.

Mystcraft: the most fun I've had since I started playing Minecraft. Craft a Link to a new Age!

Alchemic Ash is my mod.
It's full of slime and furnaces and fireballs and magic gems and explosions and lightning.
Downloading now, I'll take a look.
I do stuff.
Yeh; been thinking of getting a dropbox account just for stuff like this, but haven't gotten 'round to it yet.
Let me know how it works for you (or if it makes you toss your hands in the air, whichever).

Would not play again.
????
Seriously (on the "fell into the void" bit)? Or are you just making a joke?

*Deletes tested copy, downloads, reinstalls, fires up.... Gets same start as always.*
Gragh. Trying to sort out what the problem could be - I mean, you start only a few blocks away from a void fall, but there's safety margin.
Just to check: Bright blue sky, platform vanishing above you? Or something else?

[edit] A guy in the chat room claims:
[18:09] <mjevans> He didn't include a Myst config file; assumes default blocks == fail
Perhaps this comment is more helpful than it appears?
That may very well be it - I'm totally assuming defaults.

Does the 'Ways' in any way reference the wheel of time? Random thought I just had.
Whew!
Okay, so there's some kind of glitchy thing (which may be a block-ID deal), but it's not universal. Hmm.
It's a reference, yeh - although, obviously, not at all extensive (since, you know, it's a quick little thing).

I could try finding and installing Forge... but I'd like to avoid the hassle and possibly damage to my existing games.

It seems like it might be a block ID thing, if you've altered any block IDs (or a not-Mystcraft mod you use has done it for you).
For the sequel, though, I'll be setting the start point in the overworld, just in case... To see if that clears it up.
