Hello everyone,
I've been recently getting into custom maps, and while I'm no pro at making maps, I figured a parkour map would be a good place to start. I have higher expectations of myself and usually do not like any work I do whether it is in Minecraft or in real life. I figured I'd give it a shot, so I am here to introduce to the community my first ever map (That is not finished.)
About
This map, while currently being a work in progress will have 4 (maybe more) areas that are themed based on the 4 elements that make up our world. Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.
Level 1: Earth
My idea for this area was to use a majority of the blocks that deal with earth, such as dirt, stone, etc. But I hesitated and used iron blocks so any player(s) wouldn't be tempted to break easily obtainable blocks and place them in order to pass the level. Maybe I'll incorporate more stone, etc.
Level 2: Wind
Wing is a hard thing to convey, especially in MC due to air being invisible. So I utilized negative space, a free-fall to express the idea of air. If you notice, there are two branching paths, an easier and harder one. Passing a harder one will reward the player with an easier path in later levels while the easier path will do the opposite.
Level 3: Fire Finished!Level 3 includes a lot of lava and tricky jumps but maintains if not slightly decreases the challenge in jumps. Figured lava columns were enough to avoid. (Note: Not sure if lava will inflict death on peaceful. Oh well.)
Level 4: Water
(Not finished, will come after Level 3). Will include water (duh), maybe ice, snow blocks. Might be a medium/hard challenge, I would rather the player feel accomplished for making it this far and Level 4 will just be to acknowledge the accomplishments of players.
Story:
While I have no story other than traversing the elements, I want to utilize quotes that either I think of, the community or famous quotes in order to establish a sense of purpose for this map. More will come in time, I just didn't want to take a bigger bite than I could chew.
Challenge:
My map is semi-challenging if not slightly easier than most of the parkour maps our community has released. I am not here to make a rage-quit map (yet), just to establish myself as a beginning map maker.
Rules
1. Do not break blocks.
2. Do not place blocks.
3. Do not use any mods.
4. Play on Peaceful
5. HAVE FUN!
Other Info
I do encourage, if not welcome all constructive criticism, bugs, glitches, easier paths that weren't intended. Messages saying "map sucks, more levels, more etc," are constructive but very vaguely. I am putting what I think you might enjoy, because I enjoyed making it.
Work in Progess (WIP):
As of right now, only 2 out of 4 elements are present and aren't fully finished themselves. Anything can change, hence why its a WIP. I would rather the community help me out in developing a fun map rather than me presenting a map that isn't up to a quality I want to share with the community.

Sweet! Tell me how it goes, and if I really did make it too hard.
i couldnt get it to work on my server ( most likely i did something wrong ) ill play it tonight and let you know what i think ;D
Edit: alright, i played the map..
here is my thoughts. you should really light up the earth room a little, cause it took me a bit to find the glass pane that i was suppose to jump on. plus in the second room you shouldn't have them die because its a real **** off trying to do the earth room again, and in multiplayer not every one spawns in the right place. you should just have a ladder there going to the begging. also you should add rules at the beginning like " no breaking blocks, no flying. ect. ect. " and one last thing, have some sort a score system. like gold ingots or diamonds ( it makes people want to play more).. those are just my thoughts haha i hope it helps ( also it was a little difficult because of not being able to see the glass panes and dying if i fail )

Oh wow that helps a lot. I'll get on that as soon as I have the time and will post an updated version. If I made it too challenging I'll fix that as well. About the multi-player spawning issue, I have no idea how to fix that as of yet. I'll look into it further and think of something.
Thank you for your input, I really do appreciate it.
"EDIT" Did you use the checkpoints, especially in the earth room?
WOW LOOKS AMAZING
i was looking for a map to do my first channel vid on and this looks like a good one as long as i have your permission of course if so please check it out tell me what you think and ill tell you what i think of your map should be uploading first video tommorow

You can do whatever you like, just as long as you give me credit. Pro tip: use periods. "."
Oh alright. Did they work ok? I fear the earth room might need a finishing checkpoint as well.

Awesome! Tell me how it went!
"EDIT" Your map is nothing short of amazing. I love Mirror's edge and I was so impressed by that map I pretty much was inspired to make mine.
- Expect an updated version of my map within the next few days, maybe sooner. College is a pain sometimes aha.
It only makes me glimpse of pride. I'm so honored of inspiring you. About my map, I'm thinking about doing a Pick's Edge series, with that style of image. But atm I'm making my texture pack.I'm just very happy I could inspire you of some form. :biggrin.gif: keep doing that awesome maps!
EDIT: finished it. Can't wait for level 3 and 4! It's just the right amount between difficulty and parkouring. It got to be difficult, but not 100% hardcore (unless its a hardcore map of course).

Yeah you definitely inspired me greatly and I wish you luck on anything you produce in the future. And I've made it a tad easier, I didn't want to do a hardcore map, just something challenging.
My next project will be a parkour, but it will be more of a fluid, story driven experience rather than hardcore trial and error.

I'm sure you'll succeed in anything you attempt! I'll be always testing your maps. Just give me a PM!
Okay I just finished this and I found it quite fun (if a bit short though obviously WIP xD)
Initial thoughts were that the Earth room was pretty simple, although that block of glass that you can fall through got me like three times (thought I was just falling off).
I would also recommend that you use yellow wool (or something bright) to mark checkpoints. I didn't notice them straight away because the lighting in the Earth room was quite dark.
The Air room was nice, I didn't mind dying after failing HOWEVER, add a checkpoint to the end of the earth room. Having to do the 2nd half every time I messed up in the air room was a pain.
Overall I found it quite a fun map and cant wait to see the finished product.

Awesome tell me how it goes! Just downloaded your map and posted in your thread. Awesome work!
wow what a great map i really enjoyed it. Then piston work was very nice for the checkpoints (but you forgot one at the end of the air level) I may even do the pistons in my world!
Earth Level-Not to hard only fell once or twice that level is perfect as is.
Air Level-Got a bit more challenging but not too challenging. p.s. you forgot to put in a piston checkpoint at the end!
Lava Level-Really stepped it up a with this map! I found my self strafe jumping past lava pillars but lost my balance and fell quite a few times. :biggrin.gif:
In all, That was a great map I hope the next level will be tons better and again good job on the pistons keep up the good work!
